Our Bowel Management Program is a week-long program for children dealing with constipation and the inability to control stool when it needs to stay inside or leave the body. This is called fecal incontinence, soiling, or having “an accident.” Because constipation is more than just not being able to go-it covers other problems like fecal incontinence, or accidental bowel movements. (Which can be no fun for kiddos and caregivers alike!)
Surprisingly, fecal incontinence is a very common problem, and can come with more conditions, not just chronic constipation. Congenital conditions like spina bifida, anorectal malformations, and Hirschsprung disease are just a few of the conditions that disrupt bowel control. That’s where the bowel management program can help. A week-long program that kicks off with goals and expectations, a contrast enema (or radiology test), and a visit to get the week’s treatment plan in place. From there, X-rays, medications, parent report assessments, support groups, and opportunities to meet with a pediatric psychologist fill up the bowel boot camp week. Patients are then sent home with a follow-up plan and schedule to keep things on track.
Our hope is that you end the program feeling relieved, regular, and accident-free! But remember: we rely on you and your family to make this a success! Our program can be a life-changing experience with complete medical history, open communication, and daily updates so everything runs smoothly. Because going to school, playing sports, and being social should be fun and worry-free!
Short on time or can’t commute? No problem! Our bowel management program is also offered as a hybrid or fully-remote option with phone calls, virtual visits, local X-rays, and more. Yes, we make it easy to get those bowels back on track.
