Let me clarify a few things about Downpour: 1. VATRA was a new studio, but the developers were all skilled developers with 10+ years of experience coming mostly from IS. Certainly not "noobies". 2. There were 2 main reasons why Konami gave SH to this studio. First, SH was already dying and Konami wanted to try something new. And second, they had VERY limited budget and VATRA was the only studio willing to do it with such a budget. 3. Yes the game wasn't good even though Konami had 90% control over everything that was created or added to the game. Development was a constant clash between Konami nad VATRA. Konami had their own game designers dictating the direction of the game. 4. To release this game with such a low budget, VATRA developers had to undergo more than a YEAR of constant crunch with working hours exceeding 60 hours a week.
Funny enough, this game came out in 2012, Max Payne 3 too. Both games has soundtracks made by bands: Korn and Health. I think Konami wanted to do something similar, but Rockstar won with Health's music being more tight

As much as I like this game, it needed more time in development. So much potential to have been a classic installment with some refinements. Unlikely we'll ever see a remaster either.
Silent Hill Downpour was grossly underrated. In my opinion it was never even given a fair chance by much of the so called Silent Hill community let alone gamers who weren't hard core fans to begin with. I've been a Silent Hill player since the first one came out in 1999, and to this day Silent Hill 2 is still my favourite instalment within the series. Silent Hill 2 was able to just suck me in, and get me hooked. I was really invested into the weirdness of it all. Team Silent in my opinion has never been able to recreate what they did in Silent Hill 2, and even though I liked Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill the Room both never came close to the amazingly disturbing atmosphere of the second game. When Team Silent disbanded in 2005, other developers were given a go with this series and in my opinion Vatra games actually did the best job of them all. Although Downpour didn't move the series forward in terms of graphical quality, it certainly wasn't garbage or bad looking and it still was very decent overall. It had some well made environments, and many of the character models looked great. Alas some of the technical shortcomings of the Unreal 3 Engine sometimes showed ugly faces, but overall Vatra did a very good job. Many of the locations were very atmospheric, and there was always this sense of desolation and moody dread. In terms of storytelling and character development this game is in my opinion the second best in the series. Silent Hill 2 only scores better because it introduced us to most of the tropes we've come to know and love, otherwise this game would have hands down won in that department. Yet for many people this game isn't Silent Hill because it wasn't made by Team Silent.... And that's a shame because they truly miss out. I will never forget some of the amazing sections this game had to offer, and the Devils pit in my opinion is a textbook example of excellently written psychological horror executed in a very good way. Another highlight is the entire St Maria Monastery section. This game had a lot to offer, and I felt truly invested in the story it had to tell.
Is the gameplay length for the Downpour disc incredibly short ? I loved Silent Hill 1~4 and Origins, but didn't care for Homecoming and Shattered Memories at all. Downpour is the only one I haven't tried namely because of my disappointment with the two titles aforementioned. Horrible, horrible games.
ReneeNme and how was homecoming a horrible game? To me it was a good game, not a great game or an amazing game but nonetheless it was a good game, good story. Was it silent hill? IMO no, there was no psychological aspect to it, no great transitions from reality to the other world, but those don’t make it a horrible game, not feeling like it’s a silent hill doesn’t make it a horrible game, not having team silent not make it doesn’t make it a horrible game, I fail to see your well you don’t have a point!
Same,id rank downpour as my 3rd favorite before 3 and 4 and after sh2.I still hold sh1 as the best in the franchise, something about it overall and the time that it came out in my life just had an overall stronger feeling and impact on me overall then any of the other silent Hill games.i mean they all had some impact on my life but sh1 just takes the one with me on a personal level.
this game wasnt as scary as the other silent hill games, that i have to agree, but it certainly was similar to silent hill 2 in some ways, which actually made this game a lot better than the previous installments in the series such as origins and homecoming. Had it not suffered the horrible framerate issues and save related problems , this game wouldve been a 8/10 rated game atleast. i sometimes think people just ignore the gameplay and plot of this game and just say its bad cuz of its technical flaws . and thats kinda sad, honestly i really enjoed this game, and the additions of so many side quests made it eve more fun
Yeah, now go watch the "The REAL Silent Hill experience" playlist by Twin Perfect. If you think this video is good you've got no idea what you are in for. Those guys will open your eyes.
It wasnt all bad as critics led me to believe. I still got the silent hill feeling. I only got the creep factor from the ribbon mission. I felt for characters I barely got to know. Most of all Murphy Pendelton got his own version of silent hill. Not blood and rust. Run down blue and wet.
In the best ending it is also explained that Murphy couldn't kill Napier. He attacked him, but when it came to the part that cuts out in the intro, he couldn't do it. Sewell had to finish him off. After watching I looked up something about Daniel Licht and found out he died last month of cancer. Sad to lose someone so talented who was also respectful enough to understand that the music of Silent Hill was just as important in the game as the visual atmosphere, monsters, and story. Having a long history composing for horror movies didn't hurt either.

Yeah. I really liked the OST by Daniel Licht. The track "Town Rain" is one of my favorites. The soundtrack of Downpour has a different vibe compared with the original music composer of the series, but still did the job wonderfully for this game. It's really sad that he passed away.

It was their Downpour video that made me subscribe to their channel honestly. Very detailed and a lot of irrefutable criticisms on Downpour. Thought it was funny too. They're one of the few Silent Hill heavy channels that are actually good tbh.

this is actually one of my favorite silent hill games the way i see it yes it has problems loading was the number one for me it couldve been my copy but the story was amazing i really dont see why some people hated it
I totally agree and always said this. downpour is one of my favourites and I've played through it so many times, i loved the atmosphere and especially the orphanage part. like how murphy is holding the bar doors telling the kid he's not the boogie man, open the door. thats what the boogie man would say. i always thought that part was really interesting haha I don't get why people dislike this game
A greatly underrated game doomed to be hated because none of the original team had anything to do with it and newbies at the helm just to make it worse. It was an honest attempt at a SH game that is probably the best of the series since 4 and at least did more right than wrong. Had it not been rushed and full of bugs, despised by fans and sold so poorly, it might have been the first of many sequels headed in the right direction, but that's a moot point now that even P.T. Was canned by Konami out of spite, the idea that we will ever see a good SH game again is a pipe dream but at least we have the memories.

The silent hills game was cancelled because all the orginal creators of silent Hill are back making the new game,plus after playing death stranding I am kinda glad they cancelled it,kojima is a nut job and would've ruined it even more
I'm so happy to finally watch all this videos, to get a detailed analysis of all the silent hill games. I really wanted to know about the wins and mistakes made along the series to keep those in mind while developing an indie game based in psychological horror and the scare of the unknown in my spare time, I hope to achieve the best product possible with all the things learned.
Great game. Still remember alot of it all these years later just by how memorable it was. Amazing story but a shame akira yamaoka wasnt doing the sound tho dexter ost creator daniel licht and korn did some cool tracks. I loved the fact the fighting felt tanky and slow since homecoming
This is the strongest post-Team Silent game in my opinion. While I think the story is a bit murky and the conclusion is an absolute disaster with nothing being concrete, it provided a really great set of environments for the player to explore, and the motif of water is really interesting! The monsters (minus the Doll ) are pretty bland and to human in nature, but I love the Otherworld being completely independent from the Fog World. I wish we got to swap between Murphy and Anne though. The UV light is a really neat addition too! It's not amazing by any means, but it is stronger than Origins (which I find to be nothing but a copy + paste of the other Silent Hills), and Homecoming (which has such an absurd story, but really great environments) and Shattered Memories, which I just find very boring.
Sadly it seems Konami has abandoned Silent Hill since they cancelled P.T. and reduced Silent Hill only to a panchinko machine. Mostly because they must hate money.
I always thought the bats were representative of children, as they are found in the mines. Innocence and naïveté represented through blindness. Also representative of Murphey’s own son.
Vatra did a great job in my opinion, it was a respectful sequel to the original 4 games and I appreciate all the effort they made to ship this game, even though it has many technical flaws and the combat was wonky

Best things about this game: 1. Danny Trejo in the basement 2. Chipper silent hill radio guy 3. Drunk Tour guide Richard Nixon 4. All the Native American backstory about silent hill before the cult
What killed downpour's sales was the fact that they relied too much on big name actors as a selling point. Aaron Eckhart, Lina Headey, Antonio Sabato Junior, and Dustin Hoffman made up the bulk of the cast.
Have you thought about doing like a bonus video for a one game inbetween the game series'? If so, I would like to see your take on Metal Gear Solid 2 or even Obscure, if you want something more horror themed. Either way, can't wait to see what you come up with next. Keep up, man. I actually enjoyed playing Downpour, sure it wasn't perfect, but I think people should play it without comparing it to other sh titles. I think the story was interesting, not too complicated, and in some ways quite relatable, I think most can understand that losing someone can make you so sad that you make stupid decisions.+ It was so gratifying to see the main character grow, and the good ending was very much worth the effort, as many have said: Silent Hill is like a therapist and in this case it worked.
Nope another fan right here.. ive played all but the room and shattered memories.. im a fan of all of them.. exploring the town in downpour was great fun.. monster design was a bit bland but still good.. plenty of side quests and great looking
I enjoyed this game. I agree it isn't very "silent hill"-ish with the combat but what I enjoyed most was the exploration with the side quests and environments. But I also really enjoyed the intro song, "Intro Perp Walk".
"and then suddenly" is like the mantra for this game's plot. I like the locations, love the characters, and think that the enemy design and music are good. But the disjointed feel of the plot points comes from having to cater to multiple different endings that really change the overall story and message presented. I think if they locked down the backstory so it couldn't be changed by the ending, it would've streamlined the narrative and freed up some time for the developers.
I never played this game but it seems pretty solid, it's like the Assassin's Creed Origins of Silent Hill, refreshing and enjoyable, even to the point it beats the originals.
It's not a weird mix, any silent Hill fan, with their teen years in the mid-90s, knows that when Silent Hill was coming out korn was releasing a lot of music. Korn fit perfectly because of its Twisted nature. Late millennials claim they know the vibe about genre and subcultures, claiming to be the voice of the fans, in a really snooty way but to really grasp it you had to be a certain age group as it was coming out
The game was so so at best. Not crap like homecoming but nothing like the original trilogy. I really appreciated the open world which made it truly unique and if you gave it time it was enjoyable and brought more character. I enjoyed the Easter eggs and homage it paid to for what it's worth. Hopefully it'll come back one day -.-
A new silent hill game is sooooooo overdue!!! This being the last one released in 2011?? This was the last one I played and it still seems so long ago....
As a massive fan of Silent Hill I can say this game was...ok. I know we wanted something in the levels of SH2 but with that kind of budget and Konami sticking their nose in every stage of the development we're lucky we got even this rendition. It's a 6/10 game but there were good things in it. Unlike many fans, I liked this version of the town. It's different but somehow the water theme and the rain makes it kind of depressing. The story was ok, not very complex and very Hollywood-ish but hey that's what Konami wanted with the series ever since its creation so they got it. There are some interesting themes that are pretty good. Personally I think it was a small step in the right direction. It should have been more psychological. It is fine if it's not scary. Scares were never the main intention of the games. SH2 or 3 were not scary, they were disturbing and played with your mind which is what this game lacks. Personally I would put it above SH Homecoming and SH4. It is not an awful game by any means.
The last and final main Silent Hill Game that alas went out with a wimper but was soooo worth the bang! This is my favorite HD 3D Silent Hill ever and will always remain the best Ending to series. I love you Downpour *wipes tears* I'll never forget you.
Oh god it's clear you don't know silent hill very well. Silent hill was over after 5. Truly over after 4. This was one should never be considered a "main" silent hill.
Maybe little strange, but that movie and this comment made me want to play it. I skipped the SH series after part 4 after reading reviews. Now it is time to back. For this one. And Shattered Memories :-)

This is random, but the voice audio from this game makes me sleepy. It makes me think of daytime tv dramas on local channels (they had louder audio with slight feedback or higher treble in the background) which I would only ever see when if I stayed home from school and those were normally lazy days. Kinda weird.
This game is underrated. If only it had really interesting and symbolic monster designs, it would be a lot more well received by the fans. The story is interesting, the mood is creepy, other than the enemies my only problem with the game is some technical issues, like frame tearing etc.
Wow.. now I wish I had made it more than an hour into this game (I got stuck and gave up and never went back to it, I think there was another game I started playing at the time and just never came back lol)
It's too bad about the boring monster in this game. They're kind on the staple of the Silent Hill series. The Suffering on PS2 is how you do prison style nightmare monsters. Each of those creatures were terrifying, had meaning and had a really cool backstory if you collected the notes.
Imo from origins till downpour the series started its downfall. It seemed that the developers just made those games for the sake of selling under the banner of silent hill.

I totally agree and always said this. downpour is one of my favourites and I've played through it so many times, i loved the atmosphere and especially the orphanage part. like how murphy is holding the bar doors telling the kid he's not the boogie man, open the door. thats what the boogie man would say. i always thought that part was really interesting haha I don't get why people dislike this game
A greatly underrated game doomed to be hated because none of the original team had anything to do with it and newbies at the helm just to make it worse. It was an honest attempt at a SH game that is probably the best of the series since 4 and at least did more right than wrong. Had it not been rushed and full of bugs, despised by fans and sold so poorly, it might have been the first of many sequels headed in the right direction, but that's a moot point now that even P.T. Was canned by Konami out of spite, the idea that we will ever see a good SH game again is a pipe dream but at least we have the memories.
The game was very good,really good indeed,but..it will be always a Silent Hill game withou his soul,a soul called Akira Yamaoka and his Soundtrack.

Grand Gaming Channel your voice is a bit on the dry side for sarcasm to really shine, it’s hard when I think how much we as humans rely on both Visual and audio cues to work stuff out, i think ied lose my mind if I went blind or Deaf.
The silent hills game was cancelled because all the orginal creators of silent Hill are back making the new game,plus after playing death stranding I am kinda glad they cancelled it,kojima is a nut job and would've ruined it even more

Despite its criticism, I really enjoyed this game, it has a lot of interesting aspects including the side quests and Murphy himself.
I'm so happy to finally watch all this videos, to get a detailed analysis of all the silent hill games.
I really wanted to know about the wins and mistakes made along the series to keep those in mind while developing an indie game based in psychological horror and the scare of the unknown in my spare time, I hope to achieve the best product possible with all the things learned.

Great game. Still remember alot of it all these years later just by how memorable it was. Amazing story but a shame akira yamaoka wasnt doing the sound tho dexter ost creator daniel licht and korn did some cool tracks. I loved the fact the fighting felt tanky and slow since homecoming
This is the strongest post-Team Silent game in my opinion. While I think the story is a bit murky and the conclusion is an absolute disaster with nothing being concrete, it provided a really great set of environments for the player to explore, and the motif of water is really interesting! The monsters (minus the Doll ) are pretty bland and to human in nature, but I love the Otherworld being completely independent from the Fog World. I wish we got to swap between Murphy and Anne though. The UV light is a really neat addition too! It's not amazing by any means, but it is stronger than Origins (which I find to be nothing but a copy + paste of the other Silent Hills), and Homecoming (which has such an absurd story, but really great environments) and Shattered Memories, which I just find very boring.

Sadly it seems Konami has abandoned Silent Hill since they cancelled P.T. and reduced Silent Hill only to a panchinko machine. Mostly because they must hate money.
I always thought the bats were representative of children, as they are found in the mines. Innocence and naïveté represented through blindness. Also representative of Murphey’s own son.

What killed downpour's sales was the fact that they relied too much on big name actors as a selling point. Aaron Eckhart, Lina Headey, Antonio Sabato Junior, and Dustin Hoffman made up the bulk of the cast.

I actually enjoyed playing Downpour, sure it wasn't perfect, but I think people should play it without comparing it to other sh titles. I think the story was interesting, not too complicated, and in some ways quite relatable, I think most can understand that losing someone can make you so sad that you make stupid decisions.+ It was so gratifying to see the main character grow, and the good ending was very much worth the effort, as many have said: Silent Hill is like a therapist and in this case it worked.

Nope another fan right here.. ive played all but the room and shattered memories.. im a fan of all of them.. exploring the town in downpour was great fun.. monster design was a bit bland but still good.. plenty of side quests and great looking

I enjoyed this game. I agree it isn't very "silent hill"-ish with the combat but what I enjoyed most was the exploration with the side quests and environments. But I also really enjoyed the intro song, "Intro Perp Walk".

"and then suddenly" is like the mantra for this game's plot. I like the locations, love the characters, and think that the enemy design and music are good. But the disjointed feel of the plot points comes from having to cater to multiple different endings that really change the overall story and message presented. I think if they locked down the backstory so it couldn't be changed by the ending, it would've streamlined the narrative and freed up some time for the developers.

I never played this game but it seems pretty solid, it's like the Assassin's Creed Origins of Silent Hill, refreshing and enjoyable, even to the point it beats the originals.

It's not a weird mix, any silent Hill fan, with their teen years in the mid-90s, knows that when Silent Hill was coming out korn was releasing a lot of music. Korn fit perfectly because of its Twisted nature. Late millennials claim they know the vibe about genre and subcultures, claiming to be the voice of the fans, in a really snooty way but to really grasp it you had to be a certain age group as it was coming out
The game was so so at best. Not crap like homecoming but nothing like the original trilogy.
I really appreciated the open world which made it truly unique and if you gave it time it was enjoyable and brought more character.
I enjoyed the Easter eggs and homage it paid to for what it's worth. Hopefully it'll come back one day -.-

A new silent hill game is sooooooo overdue!!! This being the last one released in 2011?? This was the last one I played and it still seems so long ago....
As a massive fan of Silent Hill I can say this game was...ok. I know we wanted something in the levels of SH2 but with that kind of budget and Konami sticking their nose in every stage of the development we're lucky we got even this rendition. It's a 6/10 game but there were good things in it. Unlike many fans, I liked this version of the town. It's different but somehow the water theme and the rain makes it kind of depressing. The story was ok, not very complex and very Hollywood-ish but hey that's what Konami wanted with the series ever since its creation so they got it. There are some interesting themes that are pretty good. Personally I think it was a small step in the right direction. It should have been more psychological. It is fine if it's not scary. Scares were never the main intention of the games. SH2 or 3 were not scary, they were disturbing and played with your mind which is what this game lacks. Personally I would put it above SH Homecoming and SH4. It is not an awful game by any means.
You should do P.T. plus the stuff hidden in Phantom Pain about P.T./Silent Hills. Just a suggestion. Anyways, love your content.

Oh god it's clear you don't know silent hill very well. Silent hill was over after 5. Truly over after 4. This was one should never be considered a "main" silent hill.
Maybe little strange, but that movie and this comment made me want to play it. I skipped the SH series after part 4 after reading reviews. Now it is time to back. For this one. And Shattered Memories :-)

This is random, but the voice audio from this game makes me sleepy. It makes me think of daytime tv dramas on local channels (they had louder audio with slight feedback or higher treble in the background) which I would only ever see when if I stayed home from school and those were normally lazy days. Kinda weird.
This game is underrated. If only it had really interesting and symbolic monster designs, it would be a lot more well received by the fans. The story is interesting, the mood is creepy, other than the enemies my only problem with the game is some technical issues, like frame tearing etc.
I still think that downpour was the best that could happn to the SH-frachise waiting for kojima to take over,

It's too bad about the boring monster in this game. They're kind on the staple of the Silent Hill series. The Suffering on PS2 is how you do prison style nightmare monsters. Each of those creatures were terrifying, had meaning and had a really cool backstory if you collected the notes.
