HMS Hood was a work of art. Fantastic footage.

Frankly the US government should have widened the canal after Hood had shown the canal was barely big enough for her to pass through

This was a deliberate tactic to make naval operations more difficult for european powers. Neither Bismarck, Yamato or King George V class capital ship could fit through the canal. So the US could teleport ships between its 2 oceans without needing to build 2 navies, and noone else could do this. US Fast battleships went right from operating off the coast of norway to the philippines in the same year.
It made american ships comically thin (and fast) but it was a strategic decision to ensure the US would dominate the western hemisphere.

@@thevictoryoverhimself7298 That is not true, the width of the Panama Canal was due to limitations of money and technology at the time

Interesting that it was always (?) classed as a battlecruiser, yet it's referred to here as a battleship by a British media source. So...which one is correct?

She never managed to become a full-size battleship, as this would have demanded extensive modernization, for which there was always no time.

@@richhughes7450 I mean modernization, or simply upgrade to battleship standard, valid at the time of Bismarck's entering the service
