Very good! Hugs from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to our motherland Portugal, with so many stories and almost superhuman achievements. May God, our Lord Jesus Christ and Our Lady of Fátima bless you all.
Well said, and I would go further by saying that Brazil is essentially the continuation of 16th-century Portugal, as the country’s population migrated there in large numbers. People from my family (as well as many other Portuguese families) have been migrating there generation after generation.
The best history channel on TH-cam by far, not one dull moment in the whole saga of portuguese age of discovery. love what you are doing, as a portuguese person thank you
I could watch content exactly like this for hours on end until the very end. Absolutely loved this video and all Portuguese Empire videos before it. Keep up the amazing work Flash Point History!
Your storytelling of this incredible period in history gives me an adrenaline rush. These events were mind-blowing, unreal, and had an astonishingly far-reaching impact. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world!
Hello! Excited for this video, gonna watch it tomorrow since it’s very late now here in Portugal. Your series led me to buy “Conquerors” wich is your main source for these videos no? I’m loving the book. I’m currently at page 100ish, in the part about Cabral’s expediction. Can’t wait to reach Almeida and Albuquerque’s conquests. Also, I have a question for you. It is said by almost all people (including Crowley in his book), that the age of discovery was kickstarted by Portugal AND Spain and that they were the “Iberian pioneers” when it came to exploration. However, at least from what I know, not only did Portugal’s explorations start much earlier, to me, Spain kind of only happened to start “exploring” by chance (Columbus tried to get the portuguese king to fund his voyage, but he was rejected because of his miscalculation of the Earth’s diameter and because Portugal already had their “India plan”. Columbus was only approved after much asking to the spanish catholic monarchs, so I believe Spain, initially, was not interested in exploration, only starting to explore after they happened to meet Colimbus) So I would like to ask your opinion on this and maybe you can educate me. Do you think Portugal AND Spain originated the age of discovery or do you think it was just Portugal? Thanks!
Portugal led the way by a long shot - and mainly by necessity. It was small country with few resources and population - its next-door neighbor, Castile Leon was relatively huge. Portugal had to turn to the ocean. The time leading up to Henry the Navigator was a quasi golden age. The rulers of the Kingdom were known as 'The Illustrious Generation' - a group of aristocrats that were smart and resourceful - the gave Portugual the edge it needed. Portuguese ships were already exploring Africa a hundred years before Columbus' trip. Their ship designs, maps, captains, sailors etc were all top notch - what's more Portugal created a powerful and efficient bureaucracy to keep its discoveries hidden from the world, but accessible to its own people. Castile-Leon was in a deplorable state leading up to 1492 - what was once the leader of the Reconquista was nearing a failed state until the accession of Isabella I of Castile. That woman was a prodigy. She galvanized her country and sent it into a golden age it had never seen before. She united with Aragon, revamped the government, updated the army, and completed the Reconquista in 1492 after it had been going on for 781 years. 1492 was also the same year Columbus walked in and asked for help to go west. Once the New World was discovery - all the ferocity of the Reconquista mixed with the fervor the nascent Spanish Inquisition was turned on the peoples of the americas. Spain quickly caught up to Portugal. I think why Spain's exploits are so much better known, is that they had better connections with Europe and the Papacy. Isablla knew the Borgia Pope on friendly terms before he became Alexander VI. Plus with their connections, Isabella's grandson Charles V would become Holy Roman Emperor. They nearly took over Europe via marriage into the Hapsburgs. Thus Cortez and his conquest of the Aztec and Pizzaro's conquest of the Inca came to the lime light. What's more Portugal, after 100 - 150 years of empire, went into a political (They had no heir and became a part of Spain for a bit) and economic (the stuck with a rigid imperial system instead of adopting a free Markey economy like the Dutch and the English) tailspin. Portugal would never recover from this. SOOO to answer your question - Portugal really started it, and created an empire template that EVERYONE wanted to copy. The Spanish, the Dutch, and the English just took it all to a new level.
1510 Goa 25 November, Afonso de Albuquerque with 1,300 Portuguese and 300 Malabar takes Goa for the second time, in Goa was Roçalcao (Rasul Khan) with 4,000 men and 4,000 more on the outskirts of the city the battle was bloody the Muslims attacked with courage, the Portuguese fought with redoubled vigor and at the cost of blood and heroism they won, Goa was retaken, the capture of Goa was so rapid that our friend Timoja with his 3,000 men arrived when his help was useless, almost 2,000 Muslims succumbed in the fight and the rest fled, of ours 40 died and 150 were injured

Very good video like always. I am really glad that I stumbled into the channel and how it’s focusing on the Portuguese/asian angle on the age of discovery as it is always focused on the Americas and also on the Spanish conquests to then shift to the English one. Although I would also add that the focus even there goes to the conquest of Mexico and Peru and the settlement of the 13 colonies. Hope that lesser known conquests be also your focus once the Portuguese era comes to an end.
@@leonardoespino9780 I’m going to give it up to a vote - Portuguese series can end after Albuquerque and we move on to the Spanish - OR if people want - we can do the Portuguese involvement in the spice islands, first encounter with the Japanese, and the final voyage of Vasco de Gama.

I know you're about to embark onto another "age of exploration", but the Portuguese presence in Asia for the remainder of the 16th century alone would provide you with material for the next 5 years, lol. Great as always… just a quick question: why we consider as history Albuquerque the second conquer lands in Asia only after Alexander the Great if was few portuguese in Asia before Albuquerque? Why we don’t count the others that conquer Calicut, Cochin, etc. per example Francisco de Almeida should count like Albuquerque. Vasco I got it coz he just rule on seas and find the way to India but others like Almeida conquer lands there… Clarify me here pls
So, the king of Portugal ruled over Africa and Asia and the king of Spain ruled Europe (Spain, Germany, Nederlands, parts of France, Italy among other regions and of course, he was king of the New World, except for the Portuguese Brazil. How can it not be understood, why the world was divided between Portugal and Spain, in the Treaty of Tordesillas? Just because in the 20th century things had changed? Dont you worry, things already changed in the 21st century and they will change over and over again! The important is to recognize the true and to forget about Holywood movies made just with the purpose of making bigger countries that on those times were just regional territories, lost only in the nearest neighbor movements and without the means and knowledge to go further Cabo Bojador in west Africa. It would take 100 years more for the first to look what was beyhond and almost 400 years for the majority!
