This is just what I need! As I get older I get less and less excited about raising the sail on my Windward 15, which requires lifting it up above the deck, etc. I was looking at the David McCulloch hinge design from WoodenBoat #237, but my boat has a freestanding mast and I think I'd have to add shrouds if I was to go that route. Really appreciate the simplicity of your approach.
@@greg4528 Thanks Greg. It has worked pretty well for me. The trick for a quick setup is making sure that the shrouds and all the other lines are loose and free so I'm only dealing with the weight of the mast which in this case is not bad at all as it's a bird's mouth hollow mast. With your free standing mast that eliminates that worry and I suspect it'll work well for you. Let me know 🙂
On my Pathfinder I use a slot in the deck and BH2 (as a stop) to walk the mast up from horizontal. A cap plugs the slot and captures the mast once the mast is raised.
Very nice, looks like that would make a world of difference. Maybe a piece of leather on combing to protect it?. It takes me about an hour to rig my dinghy for a sail.
I've got it down to 20-30 minutes but keep looking to do it quicker and easier. I'm finding that I pull muscles easier as I age and want to avoid injuries!! : ) I originally rested the mast on the coaming and glued a 1" board there to beef it up so it's in pretty good shape, but if someone used this idea a thick peice of leather there might just be enought to keep it from getting banged up.
@@timingersoll1257 A person down in Australia made a hinge tabernacle for his mast. It was one of the dinghy cruisers that hangs out with Josh S/V Trim and Paul s/v Kate Louise. Kind of a slick setup.
The continuing evolution of the boat. They are living things!
It's kinda funny looking back at my build pictures and realizing how many little things I've changed since then. One of the joys : )
Very clever. Looks like it works very well. Great idea.
Thanks Joel...easier then rebuilding a slot or adding an actual tabernacle : )

I figured if this didn't work to my satisfaction that that would be my next step!!
