Thanks for revisiting this trip! Hope your recovery is coming along well? Dawn and I have been missing the steady stream of your videos, but certainly understand that you need to fully mend. You're certainly still in our prayers, as is your family, because they are probably very tired of you at this point! Hahaha! Blessings
I tried surfing with my kayak but every time I stud up I fell in 😅 HI Ken this was really interesting with plenty of great advice and some awesome footage 🤟🤟🤟
Good stuff! I wear the same Surfears which do a great job and I love them. I'd add having a helmet. I have been flipped, rolled on the beach, and there's always the risk of collision. On crowded beaches (and in winter for the added warmth) I have the ear pieces for more protection. I love launching over the waves getting out. The biggest challenge is timing - getting pummeled or pitch poling backwards isn't fun! If I think there is a chance I won't make it over or the sets are bigger/longer period with more energy, I'll turtle and roll under the peak. Having surfed the Trak 2.0 yet, but excited to get it out. My primary surf boat is a surf kayak or my 14' play boat. More than the stern rudder to bring the kayak back around - low brace turn!
I agree that you need to know the area. I was in a plastic sea kayak surfing on the Western Washington coast in a fairly popular spot, and on a nice long surf ride in I came upon a cable that was strung *_parallel_* to the beach and was supported by a post protruding just above the water level. I saw the post and the cable trailing off to both sides as I surfed in, but after the wave broke I couldn't see the cable. A hidden hazard. I warned my friends and mentioned it later to the kayak club I was a member of. I did not surf there anymore.
Is that the same Trak yak you used in Justine's TITS film where y'all were going down that river in Canada or someplace like that? I have always wanted to try a Trak.
Other recommends: A helmet and a reliable roll. Also, when you are breaking out, never, never, ever hold your paddle horizontal at face level! If you're not trying to launch off waves, with a bit of patience and timing, you can usually pick a path out where you never have to get smacked in the chest and face with a breaker. Kayaks are fast enough to loiter then head for the gap. Fun episode!
You're a bit late with this advice. I had a crack in some big waves about 35-40 Years ago in my new Perception Dancer. With no experience of rolling, nor wearing a skirt, I opted to go sans skirt. It was great fun till I started surfing the yak down a big wave, the yak slid straight down and dug the nose in the bottom, filled with water and became even harder to control and keep upright. With more luck than skill I kept it right side up and got back to shore where I emptied out and turned it back out into the waves. Certainly fun. Kayaking experience at that point had only been flat water on a very tame river, where most Sundays I'd paddle about 40km inn the afternoon. I still have zero experience of even watching surfers. 😆
Oh dear Ken, you had the wrong kind of kayak for that beach. Shame on you !! The best kind of kayak to use there is macski phoenix or mega surf on top evolution. Any good wave ski is better than a sea kayak with those waves. With Trump crashing the US doller right now, all of us outside the USA are looking at macski phoenix. See if you cant get one for review.

Yikes! That's a scary situation. I’ve never heard of something like that!
Wow, that was fun. Thanks, I knew nothing about this topic. Your videos are so professional.
Is this lad footage, or is your shoulder better, and your back paddling again?
Watch the intro before you comment maybe

I didn’t watch the video dude. Just was inquiring if Ken is doing better. So chill, it’s not a critique . Just a question.
