    This kind of format is very entertaining to say the least. Clementine or Strawberry to run a play list. Celluloid / MPV for a single play. VLC for DVD's and everything else. It great to have so many choices in this category!

    If I'm not mistaken, Clementine hasn't had an update for years and that's why Strawberry devs forked it to continue the development. I use Strawberry myself in Mint.

    I have used Rhythmbox, in the past, though mostly for podcasts. Gonna have a good look at Clementine and Lollypop, so ta for this.
    I like this new comparison format, especially as not many other Linux TH-camrs do anything like this, that I'm aware of!

    I have Strawberry/Clementine and love it because of the playlist structure.

    Best AIMP alternative? All I want is a small winamp style player in the corner with a good playlist layout and album art.

  • @phuchu
    @phuchu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Every single music player for Linux is horribly limited compared to foobar2000. This is the one reason I still keep a Windows install around. I'll never go back to manually creating playlists or being stuck with a layout I don't like.

    Great video! I use Rythmbox because it automatically finds my Forked-daapd server running on a Raspberry Pi. Double clicking on a music file brings up MPV. I use ripperx to rip and MusicBrainz Piccard to tag. My Raspberry Pi has a HiFiBerry DAC board connected to a vintage Yamaha integrated amplifier, controlled using Music Player Daemon.

    I've messed with a bunch. *Deadbeef* all the way. Similar to Foobar. Once you got the layout you can backup your setup files and restore it.

    Tom, you didn't pay attention to the feature which is the most important to me: hotkeys and global hotkeys. It used to be standard that audioplayers supported that (like WinAmp) but these days sadly many audioplayers don't support it. It is clumsy to open the window of the mediaplayer just to operate it, it is way more convenient if you hit a global hotkey to play/pause, load the next/previous song, change the volume...

    • @SwitchedtoLinux
      @SwitchedtoLinux  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. I didn't think of hotkeys.

      Learn to code. It's 16 lines in the wndproc procedure.
      At least you can do that.
      I had to learn reverse engineering on a fking windows me machine!
      You make me sick! ;)

    • @sammymcfone8281
      @sammymcfone8281 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Linux driver support was crap. Had to use generic input device. No pll control.

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sammymcfone8281 I can code, that does not mean that I know these tricks. These days we don't learn those tricks because those tricks are not shared anywhere where we come. That is TH-cam, forums, Telegram. Yes, I also read books about Linux, I haven't found any book which teaches these things yet. Back in the days you could more easily learn those tricks because those were discussed, because people had to do that. I can program in C and some other languages, I understand assembly and VHDL, I never heard of that wndproc procedure whatever that is. But I will look it up. I kind of envy the people who were into Linux in the early days and who learned those tricks.
      By the way, I had access to the internet and 'modern' PC's in 2003 or 2004 for the first time and for many years I had an internet-cap of 30 GB/month at most. I missed the start of all of that. Only in the late 00's I heard of Linux for the first time, hence me not having been able to get into it early. But if you know a good book or website where they explain those tricks then I would love to learn more about it. For example how to get a DAC to work if there is no official driver for it on Linux.

    My favs: DeadBeef, Audacious, CMUS. I like Gnome Music Player but for whatever reason it does not work in finding my music otherwise it looks very nice. The rest are just messy interfaces which messes with my minimalism.
    The problem with Rhythmbox is that it looks so different on each distro based on their theme which means it can look good or it can look pretty ugly.
    Clementine is just ugly and and a pain to use. Too many boxes and odd theming. I just don't like it.
    Lollipop is nice looking but I just find it strange it doesn't show me ALL my music in one list and takes up too much real estate space. Like where is the LIST of All the songs.
    Streaming music is really where I am at and that crown goes to Spotify just in selection, suggestion and ease of use.

    I love the old winamp, the skin, playlist and equalizer are so easy to access and it actually looks like a player. To me all the others look the same. I much prefer a player where you go through a file browser rather than thumbnails, artists etc. My music is already sorted how I like it in my file system, no need for the player to do that for me.The only thing missing is milk virtualization :)

    I assume you mean the "GIMP takes so long to load" comment about the Linux version. You should try loading GIMP on Windows, bud. GIMP loads at light speed on Linux comparatively. I swear it took at LEAST a minute and a half for GIMP to load on my rig under Windows 10, and I was loading GIMP off of an nvme SSD. Linux? Maybe 15 seconds, if it's feeling slow, but usually it's like 6 seconds or less.

  • @peterjansen4826

    I have modest hardware (3700X) but it only takes me 1 second to open GIMP with a JPEG. GIMP has gotten a lot faster. Maybe on Ubuntu it runs behind but on Arch we noticed a huge improvement in opening GIMP 1-2 years ago. In regard to the topic of the video, I recommend deadbeef for audio and mpv for video, but if you use mpv then you ought to use two configure files, one for settings (including graphics optimization) and one for the hotkeys. I haven't found any GUI frontend of mpv which I like, none which I used comes close to mpc-hc on Windows.

    I used to always avoid VLC for music (for no particular reason, just thought it was for video). I have recently been using it for double-click playback and also the media library and playing from the network. It is so compatible, it fills in where others fail - I think that what brought me to it. By the way - it was the only way I could play Blu-ray discs (had to buy a USB Blu-ray device first!).

    You said that qt should work better on mate, but mate is programed on gtk3 so in theory gnome apps should work better than qt (in practice both gtk and qt works fine with mate)

  • @Your_Degenerate

    I like just directing my player to one source and have it list everything even if it's within folders of that folder. One big list and arrange them by length. Having it auto check when new files are put within the directory is a plus. Rhythmbox checks all those for me and is fairly straight forward to use. I used to like Audacious because I could use my Winamp skins on it but since I started encoding music with ogg and opus I think it's one that requires extra codes installed to play. The visualizer in Winamp is awesome btw, you can switch the visual, speed up or slow it down all with simple keyboard shortcuts.

    It would probably either Clementine/Strawberry or Lollypop for me. I'll have to give those a try. Hated Rhythmbox since I've always had issues with it.
    Sadly there's no MusicBee on Linux since that's my music player of choice in Windows. And while I used to use Clementine on Windows and was fine for the most part but if I remember correctly I had issues with resource usage but I don't remember the specific issue (maybe memory leaks).
    Update: Using Strawberry now from the PPA through APT and not flatpak due to theming issues with the flatpak version being stuck to light theme. Lollypop was unusable, had library management issues, and just made me annoyed due to its GNOME influence of having a dumbed down UI just for the sake of looking good and settings being EXTREMELY limited and no dark theme.

    Hello! Has anyone tested synchronization with Android devices? My device is recognized, it is mounted (and authorized to transfer files on Android), also appears on the top right of Lollypop. But when I click on "sync", a small progress bar appears, but does not go out of "0%".
    Do you recommend any other music player for Linux that has sync, similar to iTunes?

    Hey Tom, a little off topic, but since we're on the 'audio' topic, how about an update video on an audacity fork, that is if you've heard anything. Sounds like maybe it'll be called 'tenacity', but after some 4chan's ran the maintainer off, maybe not? Sounds like they were making physical threats against him, so he quit. Thanks.

    I just need a music player/library manager like MusicBee but for Linux. To keep my id3 tags updated. Have automated playlists that adds my songs based on the genre and year. Have it show the albumart and the lyrics, scrobble to last.fm etc. But I can't seem to find anything remotely as good. On top most of the music software on linux graphically looks like software from the early 2000s. :(
