They are extremely useful. Anything that is made of of multiple objects, even if it's something from the cross section tool in part workbench or mesh workbench is a compound though it shows as one item in the Treeview it can be exploded through the part tools. I say this because of I remember rightly your into your laser cutting?
@@MangoJellySolutions I keep forgetting that even wires are objects. I do so much in Part Design that I miss many opportunities in the Sketcher/Part work flow. Ironic coming primarily from OpenSCAD where the work flow is more like Sketcher/Part, so that it should have been easier for me at first. I run Maker Forums where there are lots of laser cutting enthusiasts, but my own laser cutter build is still not quite finished. I designed it as an exercise in SolidWorks while I briefly had a license, and learning SW helped me better understand FreeCAD, leaving me with an understanding that the TNP isn't unique to FreeCAD, and a longing in FreeCAD for all lines to have midpoints, and for parametric 3d sketches... 😁 But yes, when I finish the build that is likely to become more important to me!
Thanks for this tutorial. It exposed me to a couple of new things. I did pick up an issue though with my exploded sketches when I tried to create a body in Part Design. It creates the body and it also creates the Base Feature and the sketch that I selected is hidden but the basefeature of the sketch that I used to create the body disappears and it gives me an error saying: "BaseFeature: No Shells or compsolids found in shape." I tried recreating it many times with the same results, which leads me to believe that there is maybe a setting that's not right. Because you pointed out that the sketch and the pad created from the sketch will both be compounds I then tried to first create a pad from the sketch, then using compound to split the bodies and creating a body in Part Design. That worked and it brought the split body in as a base feature. It bothers me though that it works on a solid but not on a sketch. I'm using the latest release of FreeCad v1 on Windows 11, and I believe you're running on Linux. I will try it on Linux as well to see if I get a different result, but I thought maybe you know of some issue that I could've triggered without knowing. I'm currently working on SolidWorks and Fusion 360, but I'm a pensioner and need software that I can afford, so as soon as I am happy that FreeCad can offer me the same ability to create, I want to switch not only to FreeCad but also to Linux.
Does the compound thing also work for sketches with intersecting lines? Just rambling: It still baffles me how a thing that isn't even worth mentioning in other engineering-focused CAD software can be such a pain in FC (and justifies, like, 3 or 4 different workarounds to somewhat remedy).
@@MangoJellySolutions Dammit, I feared that was the case. All the more thx for these videos providing workflows that help to use FC without loosing one's sanity.
Question, When exporting the image to STEP/STL you only selected the Mirror Feature rather than the Body. Why? I guess I've been selecting the Body then Exporting. Great videos, Thanks
Came here to ask the same question, because I always export the Body unless I'm specifically needing to export an earlier step in the design tree for a body for some obscure reason. (I've done that at least once but I no longer remember why...)
Come sempre ottimo video spiegato benissimo, complimenti. Se posso vorrei fare una richiesta, si può fare un video sui comandi (Shape Binder) e ( Sub Shape Binder) in Part Design? Grazie👨🎓👨🎓
This might change my whole workflow, have to test it. Thanks!
😁😁😁👍👍
good tutorial. Wish there was a way to create the "hinge" as a part and just multiply as well
Muito bom feliz Natal
I'd used subshape binders successfully before, but didn't know compound sketches for master sketches. This is going to help me a lot. Thank you!

Thanks Darren, very creative project and well tuto'ed. Merry Xmas!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed, and Merry Christmas to you too!
Thank you

No it wouldn't work if you have an intersecting lines as they wont be separate profiles in one sketch.
