Ship 31 rolls to Masseys. Will it spark this time? Tower 2 on the move! When Stack? A not-so-reusable launch pad. How will they fix it? Another hurricane on its way. Only this time, it's big! And a Chinese rocket performs a not-so-static, static fire.

What do you think? How long will it take for the first full Block 2 Starship to appear?

Never mind Surf Shark, what about the Shark in the Surf prowling the shore of South Padre Island? It celebrated July 4th by snacking on the legs of at least three people so far, so it's body count so far is higher than that of any Cyclone or Tropical Storm!
can you please stop that annoying bass sound in the back ground of the video. It is incredibly distracting
Thanks Felix and Team 🙂👍
I'm continually amazed at how fast SpaceX learns and makes design changes in both its space craft and ground support equipment. It's the firms greatest strength, and I hope firmly embedded in its culture.
IFT-5 is gonna be a awesome to see, i can’t wait for the launch

"...the test stand could no longer hold the rocket down. That is bad." I almost snorted my coffee. Hahahahaha.....
To my understanding, having lived near boca chica in the RGV, there is no "bedrock" within several hundred feet of the ground. Piles are sunk sufficiently deep for them to become, in effect, the "bedrock" and basically almost immovably stable.
Yeah, from what I've heard, bedrock is more than a mile down in that area.
I guess it's more like when you put a straw deep in the sand. At some point it gets stuck for good and acts like a really stable support =)
Fingers crossed the hurricane won’t do too much to set them back.
It is already a Cat 2
Beryl is my biggest concern right now as well. With how fast hurricanes can gain strength, it could be a monster storm when it makes its next landfall.
last i saw its supposed to hit texas un-classed. IE tropical storm

I think this version of mechazilla is is actually expendable at this point so it can be completely updated. Hence the catch attempt this soon
Highly likely! Also supported by the FAA NOTEM showing the giant tower 2 stacking crane will expire in mid-August. They COULD extend the NOTEM, of course… but I imagine they listed a target “stacking completion date” for the original NOTEM end date.
Casualty doesn’t just mean death it’s deaths or injuries.
noun
“a person killed or injured in a war or accident.”
I think the biggest problem was there not being a flame trench. I'm confident that version 2 will have everything it needs to handle the demands of multiple launches.
It could be that tower one will be relegated to catching duties ONLY.

For those of us who have a hearing problem the audio could be be a bit louder
I am approaching my 91 year Have ben following Felix for a long time way before he moved to America
They make hearing aids with Bluetooth, allowing you to use your phone as though you had headphones! Found that out last year, as my neighbor at my cabin has them.
It appears that the Ship quick disconnect (SQD) is not moving far enough to get out of the high-speed entrained air flow around the exhaust plume produced by the 33 Booster engines. It's that entrained air flow that's causing the damage to the SQD.
In addition to having it retracting back a little further, maybe they also need to have a couple water jets aimed at it...
They plan to have a few employees stand there holding “fire shields” in front of them to protect the QD hardware. Slightly risky, and potentially toasty job if you ask me.
I am amazed at how quickly the condtruction crews finish their projects. Who ever they have controlling their scheduling are masters at it.
If it were for NASA, it would be 100x slower. Endless red tape and bureaucracy. And even when finished, won’t be successful. Government vs private sector before your eyes. Government motto: “if it isn’t broken, fix it until it is”.
What people forget or just don't know is that these ships are designed to gather data rather than nesisarily succeed. Designed for SpaceX to learn and find issues that data alone cant give them.

Who knows whether they were a troll, a outright idiot, or just an ignorant viewer who didn't know any better...
My guess is one of the latter two, as a troll would've followed up after multiple people corrected them, informing that it was actually 100% successful considering the objective was solely days acquisition... but also that everything preformed _BEYOND_ expectations.
So yea, it's indeed "stating the obvious" for *most of us* on these sort of channels, but unfortunately it's *_not_* obvious for most of the general public (and many large media outlets).

Maybe Elon delayed the rollout of B-12 because of the Hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico?

Sparky was the mascot for General Electric. My nickname as a kid was Sparky, because my initials are GE and I was full of energy.
Sparky had a light bulb for a head and zig zag electric bolts for arms and legs.
The Chinese engineer who tried to convince his superiors that the stand would not keep the rocket secure and was ruthlessly mocked and laughed at, was fired for not trying hard enough to convince them. Probably.
Fired? naw more like disappeared.
Fired? Being right when superiors are wrong is "subversive behavior". He'd be sewing shoes in a slave camp in the Gobi by the end of the week. (posted this comment 3 hours ago...can't imagine there was anything shady about it being blocked)
the engineer's superiors were probably why inadequate equipment was used, because constructing the right stuff would take too long and/or cost too much. that seems to be what usually happens in these types of cases
I had a company in China. And while looking for a quality highrise office building we found the employees uncharacteristically reticent.
When we finally got them to speak up, it came out that none of them trust the construction of any important build. They were afraid to go in the building.
As it is Chinese ulture today to cut corners with substandard work, my guess is some constractor used substandard material or construction in order to pocket some of the money (standard Chinese culture today -- how to get richer by putting out a cheaper product).
Nice spot of the Charybdis vessel 6:56 Altought it has nothing to do with SpaceX because it is a Wind Turbine Installation Vessel I am happy to see it because I work for Huisman, the company which built the 2200mt Leg Encircling Crane you can see in the video. 🎉
I liked the background music in one of the first sections. I'd love to hear more. There is like a smooth flow in the video.

It's probably easy to clone SpaceX rockets. It's a lot harder to clone SpaceX's success with its rockets.
We have to ready for a fully functional Chinese Falcon 9 clone.
Starship is not a success, anything but.
@@LeonAust Whether Starship is or isn't a success is irrelevant, since it was a Falcon 9 clone that failed its static-fire test in China.
@@LeonAustSuccess can only be measured once design work is finished and it has reached "production" status. Since it is still very much in "Alpha Test" status, it therefore cannot be 'successful'; *_nor_* can it be deemed a 'failure'.

@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE Failure is when things fall apart to the extent that there's no point in continuing with an endeavor. But with Starship there's no point in stopping, since everything seems to be pointing to SpaceX hitting another home run with it.
a shorter mount with a flame trench would make the tower relatively higher
Except from the graphic, 'flame trench' seems like a misnomer, it is more an above-ground flame deflector.
Can they lower the OLM to offset a tower segment? Doubtful.
If you just stand in front of the rocket and look up, it will look way taller. Problem solved!! 😮

You are my number ONE for SpaceX updates. Great work.
If my math is correct, ULA and Boing should join forces with the Tian long rocket providers. It was 3 months premature in lift off while ULA/Boing are years late. Adopting Tian Long rocket philosophies may shave months of delays off their schedule!🧐
Love that Orange Grasshopper crane, loving the second tower so far.

I think it's funny we sit and act like China cares about if they risk lives or not.
For real 😂 they dgaf
China has historically never had a problem with wasting lives. It’s literally got billions
Ya… the Uyghur concentration camps are a big indicator.
Dropping spent stages with toxic hypergolic fuel on their own people is crazy, they do it almost regularly too. The way they steal the designs for everything is crazy too. We shouldn't be surprised that they are copying the Falcon 9, cause they copy just about everything else. I always thought it was funny that companies that want to keep their profit margins will outsource their manufacturing to China, then while they are making your product they will make fakes lol.
Exactly. They care about their "national pride" (aka their leaders' overblown egos), and power, and that's about it. They have a long history of ignoring human rights and safety.
Hey Felix, I'm from Jamaica and just recovering from Beryl. It took 3 days to have power restored in my area.
The Chinese TEMU rocket! PMSL. Laughing aside, the 25+% shortfall in hold-down capacity absolutely was a human error.
7:00 Atlantis in the background...
Only stands to reason that Launch tower and pad V2.0 would incorporate all lessons learnt from tower 1. The whole concept has never been done before and the SpaceX doctrine of build, try, reassess, and implement changes and when enough changes have been successful redesign applies equally to the towers as the booster and starship.
I can't wait for ift 5
Storm Update: It looks like the upper level low just off the coast of Brownsville will steer the storm along a more northerly path. This puts landfall between Matagorda bay and Galveston bay. A path like this puts Starbase on the "clean" side of the storm. Unfortunately, that means that dang thing is headed right for me.
And a note on the pilings for the second pad: they are not sufficiently long to reach bedrock. Bedrock is over 250 feet down at Starbase. They only have to go down far enough so the friction between the piling and sand is sufficient to hold the weight without sinking further. Many large buildings have foundations like this. A west coast building (San Francisco or Portland, I can't remember which) hit bedrock on one side of the building, but not the other. The imbalance has caused the building to lean to one side by 5 feet at the top floor. They expected no bedrock anywhere and didn't update their design once the did hit bedrock.
Boca chica village:

130 large mobile homes
70 smal RV‘s
20 lots for house construction
Summing to about 300+ people residing beside the starbase factory
Spacex is king!
There will be a flame trench similar to Massey's this will create a lower OLID and allow a taller stack.
I think a hundred launches is a number of years away, so the current tower can still be used for many launches. This is DEVELOP tower and sooner or later they will figure it out before they build new towers.
Huh, 3 commercial breaks in a 20 min video ?
Daiium its a bit crazy dawg..
Hey Felix keeps us informed about Hurricain Beryl Preparations: As of 12 noon on July 5, the Primary track of Beryl is moving more northerly, and looks like it will go directly over Starbase at about 7 am Monday. It could reach Cat 5. What preps is Starbase doing? Will they bring down the Cranes? I'm hoping Beryl will veer a lot more north.
Smart call is a shorter launch mount. As much sub terrain as possible. Then all maintenance can be done near ground level and fewer exposed papers and fittings.
Not in that location - the water table is just a few feet under the ground (2 ft or so), so sinking stuff into the ground will create its own set of problems, e.g. keeping salt water out...
So re 4:00 how about this: the launch tower won't need to actually be that much higher because the launch mount will feature that flame trench, to be dug out underground moving the launch ring and everything closer to the ground.
12:50 Angry Batman says: Where's the ring!
Build an Exhaust Diversion Trench and then, of course, Starship will have future problems with engine damage at launch.
Like the nickname given to ship 31 - Sparky. Kind of gives a personality. Hopefully there won't be a repeat of the initial testing.
Has for the Oooops Launch in China.... Someone best be saying - Fix that ASAP !!
Large hurricane bearing right down on the area. Hope Starbase survives well!
Instead of a higher tower they will build a ground flat launch pad.
This allow Space X a higher version of the Booster or Ship.
4:00 I don't think it will change since it's more convenient to have less notifications xD
Each tower segment only needs to be a little taller for the whole tower to grow.
Isn’t the ship qd on a giant swivelling arm? Couldn’t they just swing that entire arm out of the way right after disconnecting? I originally assumed that was what they would do…
Great report, as always Felix!
Felix - really love your energy on your videos, you are fun to watch and you rock!!
That fuel pipe quick disconnect just needs a Ceramic Shell covering to protect it from the heat and blow it away. Simple

Ja
Bratty thing to say
@@charliecohen3091 joke flew over you?
Great overview of the latest developments at Starbase! The cryogenic proof testing of Ship 31 and the construction progress of Mega Bay structures are crucial steps forward.
Concrete is the way to go, using as joins that can be replaced custom structures. That way less heat on the main structures of steel or metal they use
If you're talking about the OLM... the _current_ one is also concrete, but has metal sheets as armor to protect it from the heat and shockwaves during launch - both of which are what destroyed the concrete under the rocket during IFT-1's launch and prompted them to install the water deluge system under it _(aka the Rocket Bidet)_
OLM ver2 will undoubtedly *also* have metal cladding. (as depicted in the fan-made speculative renders)
@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE burning the steel on to fined concrete would that not be possible like cheese on the on of pizza 🍕 so that way water can't remove it from the steel
Oh Surprise. Chinese are innovating! A dynamic static fire (DSF) !
Still wondering if there is "one" tower 2 section being built somewhere near Starbase. The big crane section stacking should be finished before the next launch. They definitely would not want the crane near launch towers during a launch.
Look for more flapless ships. HLS, orbital tankers, orbital stations. Time to get busy!
Say what you want about hurricanes but we rely on them. I’m in Dallas and that’s how we get our July rains that we need.
Hey Felix , what happens to the water landed boosters and starships that still have armed FTS onboard?
The FTS is detonated which then makes the vehicles sink. If the vehicle decides not to sink it is shot.
German talking about the final solution,, what could go wrong! Lol, thanks fir the news brotha
Space X will get it done. No rush. Success takes time.
Gonna need a flood wall around entire facility. Storm surge doesn't care how pretty a building it is or what's in it.
Driving through that seawater on the road is going to tear the shit out of the vehicles.
😅maybe the new launch mount will be shorter, so the distance to the top of the tower will effectively increased allowing for taller rockets with the existing tower. The new flame trench may allow this
To be fair, the ship QD arm is ridiculously unprotected. It should be plated over and move away further than it does now.
4:01 on top of all that lol
That Michael Reeves part was unexpected (and very funny)
Chicom rocket leader: Is the rocket for static fire?
Chicom minion: Yeas sir! I think
🚀💥😳🤯
Chicom minion: OOPS! 😱😵💫😵
Felix, you said the word damn like a true southerner. 😎
Hi, and thanx for all past and future info 😃 Is it possible that the new design of OLM-2 is lower than OLM-1? That will make the available height for ships/boosters greater without increasing the total height 🤔
I am a little surprised ship 31 is not in one of the bays stripping off the tiles and putting the new ones on... I guess they might wait to see how they hold up during launch 5..
Static fire tests should probably use 'abort modes', just like flight missions - just for this purpose. They might have done better if they just let it fly away a little further before dropping it.
Maybe the elon-gated starship v2/v3 doesn’t require taller tower if the OLM is lower. The flame trench could be under ground level, like in Massey
