      @Rachel Wood Agreed, and to built off it.. To say Senna was reckless, isn't wrong but that shouldn't come off as a negative trait per say. He drove without fear, he was a True racing driver, might it have gotten him killed, sure a case could he made. And, as tragic as it is, he died being who he was, He was the driver without fear and would always push if it meant winning or going faster.

      Both me and my dad do this and it seems to work quite well. Part of what makes it viable is that when you lift, the weight of the car shifts forward, which will increase rotation, and then the next blip supplies you with enough power to keep pace.

    Regarding the small text speculating the engine could've had 900-1,000 HP - Not in '88. A 2.5 bar absolute boost limit was implemented in 1988, and would limit the engine to under 700. In '87, the boost limit was 4 bar, and those higher numbers were more realistic, but the Honda motor was not in the McLaren that year.

      @sombraarthur 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That was called "traction control", with the remarkable difference that when Senna was doing it, it was not automated, but his skill. Same with Schumacher and his left-foot braking he learnt from Kart driving, which was used extensively at Rallying at the time.
      The car is not "dancing", the car is losing and recovering grip, all the time. He was only beaten when a guy who lost less traction than him came around, doing the "unthinkable" thing that gave him that little edge. Schumi shown Senna that the secret to being faster was NOT losing and recovering grip quickly, but NEVER losing that grip.

    • @chrismcdonaldracing
      @chrismcdonaldracing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@sombraarthur oooo you mean he showed him when he still had TC on his car. Your analyst is wrong Senna would slide the car intentionally this is why he would burp the throttle over and over into the corner. If Schumacher did not have the tc he had he could not hold a candle to Senna.

    • @digiman76
      @digiman76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sombraarthur Even I could beat Senna with the 1994 Benneton. The car had much better traction and stability. The only advantage of the Williams was on the straights...it had a better motor. Senna was doing miracles to keep with Schumacher at those three initial races...you can see him absolutely on the edge and maybe it was one of the reasons he got killed.... if he accepted second place on those first races later he would win the championship because the Williams sorted out the problems and the car was much better. Even Damon Hill challenged Schumi. Senna was 10 times better than Hill

    • @sombraarthur
      @sombraarthur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@digiman76 that is where you are wrong, mate. Schumacher introduced new techniques like left-foot braking and he was able to keep his foot on the power much much more than Senna.
      What I find funny is that Niki Lauda said something alike what you said "even I could drive those cars" and then when he did, he spun out faster than the 0-100km/h accel time of an F1.
      Senna died because a lot of things had gone wrong, it was a complete catastrophy that happened, from a lower car due to colder tyres to fracture of the suspension and steering column, lack of a run-off area, the wall at a really steep angle and so forth. Take away one or two of those variables and he might had lived.
      Damon challenged Michael, because Schumi had been disqualified for two races and banned in other two. Otherwise, Schumi would have won that champioship in 1994 with a foot and both hands tied to his back, had Williams fixed that car or not.

    Hi Jimmy, the 1988 MP4/4 the regulations allowed only 2.5 bar manifold pressure, compared to 4 bar in 1987 and unlimited in 1986. This restricted maximum power of the Honda engine to around 675hp. The fuel tank was restricted to 150 litres, which meant that the race power was around 610-630hp. There is an SAE paper on the Honda RA168E written by Honda R&D.
    The RA167E from 1987, with 4 bar manifold pressure, had a maximum power of around 1,000hp.

    The MP4/4 had a Honda RA168E and produced 685 bhp:
    "Although the absolute output of the RA167E is certainly impressive, it is relatively less potent than the 1988 engine. The regulations in effect in 1987 permitted the RA167E to use a boost pressure of 4 bar (rather than only 2.5 bar as permitted the following year), and 195 litres of fuel (rather than 150 litres) that were allowed in 1988. Leaving aside the smaller amount of fuel available in 1988, the reduction in boost pressure alone would suggest that the RA168E should produce no more than 630 hp., rather than the 685 hp which the Honda’s engineers actually achieved.
    Torque figures for the RA168E are also impressive with a maximum of 313 ft lb (a) 10,000 rpm, but the really astonishing aspect of the torque curve is not its peak figure but the incredible flatness and spread of power. Over 295 ft lb were available all the way from 8000 to 12,000 rpm."

    Mum was one of the nurses looking after Mika Hakkinen after his crash. The only thing she ever told me was "he's very short" 😂 so glad people remember this track, I wish I was old enough to see the F1 version (born 94 so obviously no memory), and now the Premier is getting rid of the V8 version so yeah, two entire events destroyed by government.

    I was there when Senna, Prost, Hakkinen and Hill raced in Adelaide. I actually heard the Hakkinen crash. Awesome track and a nice place to live (17 years), just rather hot in summer. I prefer this track to MELBOURNE.

    I worked in a hospitality tent in '88 and '92, at the end of the main straight. The screaming of the engines during the rapid-fire gear changes during braking was amazing. Mansell's car was utterly deafening - seriously painful.
    Edit: To clarify, it was the very long back straight, not the pit straight.

    Senna is an absolute legend and a hero to me, it's almost a slap in the face to me when car games and simulators take the sponsorship off of the MP4/4 because that car means so much to me. I'm glad automobilista leaves the Marlboro on there.

    Yup, there is a reason why Adelaide in it's F1 form is consider to be the best inner city based street circuit in the world where the teams and drivers get to do proper racing, and it was a true form of man, and machine. On a side note, Adelaide has the record of having the shortest F1 race........... Ever.....

    To be fair Senna and the other real drivers had the benefit of feeling absolutely every minute thing the car did in their bodies, as if it was an extension of their bodies. Every little sensation that you're never gonna get with a sim rig like that, makes it harder to predict the cars behaviour without that stuff... But boggles my mind who the hell would voluntarily drive like that in real life, that is truly deadly!

    I met Senna back late 80s early 90s here in Norfolk when I was only 10 years old.
    I bet if he had been alive today he would have trained lots of new Talent and F1 would not have been the way it is.
    I certainly would have chose a career path differently to what I am in at the moment which is nursing but I can still race when I want to and do still dabble in it... I don't need a games console to say hey how quick I am because you can't press reset in real life...fact

    Hey there, nice video. You are laboring yourself excessively, drivers those days did not use clutch while driving. Although H pattern, the dog box gears ensured you dont need clutch while on the move. Left foot on brakes, right foot on gas. Little lift of on upshift and slight blip on downshift. Raced h pattern single seaters myself, did the same.

    McLaren only won 15 out 16 times with the 1 occasion being at monza, where nigel mansells subsitute driver crashed into senna while being lapped. As it turned out this gave the lead to the red cars in the first gp since enzo died. Wins for drivers was like this. Senna 8 Prost 7 . Also i need to see the 98t around adelaide because that title decider was epic. Formula 1, please give us adelaide.
