    I played this recently in GC and I’m not an impulsive buyer. I went back a couple hours later and bought it. It’s sick for the value and sounds great in bedroom or in a band. I’ve owned several amps worth 2-3 times as much and this one is a keeper.

    I have this amp, for folk interested I was advised by Marshall to set bias to 70mv per side ( stock tubes ) this is the correct as left factory setting. Mine had been set at 86mv ( older DSL100 was suggested 90mv ) I was finding the tone fairly harsh. Now at factory setting 70mv the amp now sounds superb again. Hope that helps anyone looking for bias values on the new DSL100 HR

    • @michaelinglis8516
      @michaelinglis8516 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on the specific amp and power tubes. Just cause thats the recommendation doesnt mean that will work with everyones setup. Mine came from the factory set at 67mv a side( they intentionally set the bias cold to keep the tubes from having any trouble for as long as possible). I found for me the perfect setting was 74mv a side with the stock JJ's but even with the bias at 67mv the JJ's were just too warm and didnt work well at higher gain settings. Now im using Electro harmonix tubes and 78mv a side and its perfect(EH tubes have a little less wattage on average than JJ's which really helped tame the bass and gain in my DSL100HR). Marshall telling you to set the bias at 70 mv was a recommendation not a rule. And if you look on the forums most people with this amp have found it sounds better biased a little higher. 70mv is likely manageable but not ideal. Then again for your set up and the specific tubes that your amp has that may be perfect. Dont ever set bias based on a recommendation or even plate voltage for that matter. Just use your ears and common sense. But if your happy with it at 70mv thats wonderful cause your PT's should last a little longer.

      The stock JJ power tubes make the amp a little too "full" for my tastes also which i believe it what contributes to that(i mainly use high output humbuckers and Fishman fluence moderns which doesnt help lol). I changed the power tubes to electro harmonix el34s which have a little less wattage per tube compared to the JJs and it seriously helped. Now the amp sits more "level" gain wise. Meaning i can turn it up high and with the right settings it still sounds good and clear and i can turn it down low and with the right settings its still full and not "anemic" sounding. As a side note the stock and after markets JJs i had biased about 74mv a side for the sweet spot and the Electro harmonix bias a little higher at 78-80mv a side for the sweet spot.

    I seriously love this amp. Ive had it since launch and in the year and a half or so ive had it ive learned exactly how it reacts to eq changes, preamp volume and preamp gain changes. With that knowledge id be willing to bet i can get pretty much any tone imaginable. Whether bright high gain, Bright Crunch, or Bright Clean to Warm High gain, Warm Crunch and warm cleans and everything in between. And thats with high output humbuckers AND Single coils. This amp is incredibly versatile. I would recommend changing the power tubes to something a little lighter( the stock JJs arent bad but they make the amp almost a little too full and warm). Im using Electro harmonix EL34s and the preamp tubes stock are absolutely fine. I have changed some of the preamp tubes but i had one hell of a time trying to find a combination of preamp tubes that sounded better than just the stock preamp tubes and ive heard others say that as well. I think it comes down to using 12ax7s with a little less gain than normal and el34s ( or similar ) that put out a little less than the stock JJs cause the amp is already high gain. In my opinion doing that made my amp much more versatile and "manageable" i guess you could say. Its great stock for sure, but im convinced this amp could be pretty much anything you could want it to be. If you mainly use single coils the stock tubes would likely be exactly what youd want. I just found with my high output humbuckers i didnt need as much gain as it had on tap. Even now with the changes ive made ill never want for gain theres plenty gain and plenty headroom for cleans aswell. Great amp.

      Its a real dual master volume amp that sounds great at any level. The preamp was designed to have enough gain to drive a good gain tone even at low volumes. And it has tons of headroom also which means you can also get excellent cleans. Volume has never been a problem. I practice all the time at night while my girl is asleep in the next room without headphones. In fact i NEVER practise through headphones for several reasons. You should always practise through a real cab or at least studio monitors so you can get a realistic feel. But it does have emulated out if you are dead set on using headphones.

    • @michaelinglis8516

      I have the 100HR and ive had it since launch and i love it. But if you already have a 40C i dont link youd really get enough of a benefit to make it worth the cost. The 40c is a great combo. Spend your money on a new speakers. Also i see you already have a 2x12 (is that a cab or a combo?) if its a cab that your running with the 40c then thats ideal. But if your only using the 40c with one speaker i highly recommend getting another 1x12 and running it along with the 40c's speaker. And make sure to separate them a few feet apart. I will never buy another 2x12. Only 1x12's. That way i can separate them and get more spread which sounds soo much better. Plus if you just wanna run 1 cab I can. You can stack them, run them side by side or my personal favorite and i truly believe the best option is to run them a few feet apart like i said before. Anyways youll get a lot more extra tone for your set up by just getting some new speakers or a cab. Also theres plenty 40c mods to really make it dialed in for your preferences. The 100HR is my favorite amp ive owned in the last 16 years and i dont ever see myself parting with it but if i had a 40c i probably wouldnt trade it in for the 100HR or 40CR, id just use my money elsewhere. They HR's eq is updated and i really prefer it BUT with careful consideration taken when dialing in your 40c you can get the same tones or at least close enough that nobody could tell the difference. Its basically just a little easier with the HR's to get the tone your after since the basic eq is a little more balanced and a bit warmer(more jcm 800 like). The H's are a bit brighter in my opinion and that really works in a mix, the HR's eq is a bit warmer which is great on its own but i have to dial it in differently for recording or jaming since it tends to be warmer unless you cut some bass or resonance or boost the treble or presence. Ok im writing a book, bottom line is they are very very similar and both great amps.

    Whats the diff between these(the 100hr) and the previous dsl 100h’s? Anyone know?

    • @juttaman25
      @juttaman25 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Channels can be better balanced as they now run dual master volumes. Each recall will remember which volume you used. You might want to add a boost on the same channel on a different recall using the second master volume setting for example.

    Sounds amazing but I wonder, it looks like it only has 1 channel, right? What if I want to play clean and loud? Do I turn up the volume on very low to no gain? Supposed the gain is at 1, do I start breaking up when I strum forcefully? Or would it stay clean? And if it’s stays clean I wonder how loud I can get? I want to stay clean so I can run my own pedals but I have to be loud cuz my drummer is extremely loud and so as my bassist who has a tube amp. My poor 60wt solid state is not keeping up.

    • @michaelinglis567
      @michaelinglis567 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has two channels each with two settings lol. And it comes with a footswitch for switching between classic channel and the ultra channel as well as a button to turn on/off the fx loop which I find very very useful.

    • @michaelinglis567
      @michaelinglis567 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it's great clean, you can get stupid loud without any brake up. You won't have trouble dialing in any tones, especially if you know how to use your guitars volume knob.

    • @michaelinglis567
      @michaelinglis567 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The channels are classic with clean an crunch settings and ultra with od 1 and od 2 settings. The clean setting has the gain structure of a plexi and the crunch is modeled like a jcm800. Then the od 1 is like a hot rodded jcm800 and od 2 is like a hot rodded jcm800 with a different mid feel which gives you a better pallet for high gain (all of that is taken from the manual I just didn't quote it verbatum). It's a seriously versatile amp that does cleans and high gain an everything In between well. So if you play "rock" to "heavy rock/metal" it's perfect. But if your playing metal 75% of the time or more id recommend a peavey 5150 or 6505 etc. With a boost/overdrive pedal the marshall can do all that also it's just not aimed at the stupid high gain market but it still have tons of gaon on tap if you need it. More than most people would ever need. He'll I get 90% of my tones from the clean channel (plexi like) and the crunch channel (jcm800 like) with a ts9 tube screamer. It's perfect for everything Alice in chains etc. But I also play a 7 string and it dies deftones etc well also. In other words it won't limit you, only your technique/ability will.

    I just unboxed the DSL100H ,the only difference between it and the H-R IS The Master vol. other than that I personally do not see any differences ,,,oh unless you take into consideration the $100.00 more the H-R cost .,So far I'm lovin the 100H .

    • @michaelinglis8516
      @michaelinglis8516 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 100H is nice but there are way more benefits to the 100HR other than a redine EQ. I called Sweetwater and got my 100HR for $749 brand new and I'm not the only one. The 100HR has external bias points now which was a nice surprise that isn't being advertised. The 100H was ok but the 100HR is the clear winner. It's the same amp "debugged" and marshall basically listened to consumers and updated the eq and added emulated outs mp3 ect. and how could I forget no more pentode triple b.s.. But you shouldn't regret your purchase as long as you got it for a good price. The 100h is nice it's just not as refined.

    • @JohnDodgeNetJD
      @JohnDodgeNetJD 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Easier bias access on the HR, 4 foot-switchable channels and fx loop on/off, plus good emulated out (if you use a balanced cable, which if I had to guess, some of those complaining about it used unbalanced). It has all the upgrades we wanted from the DSLH and got em. I love both of mine.

    Worst version of the DSL 100 imo.
    I have a 2014 that sounds great. Bought 1 of these for a backup and returned it in a week.
    Sounds different and the sound cuts out for a split second when changing from the new and improved clean channel to the new and crappy od channel.
    If you want something closer to classic Marshall sound look for a used DSL H and avoid the hR.

      This is a tube amp not a cheap SS dimeing the gain on a high gain tube amp is a good way to get a really shitty tone. Its all about balancing the preamp volume with the preamp gain. You want as little gain as possible as it will lead to a clearer tone. Smh, i hate that im having to explain this.

    Marshall only make their handmade "Plexi style" amps in short runs in the UK. Everything else is made overseas now! Celestion speakers are made in China now too!! So sad...

      Companies used to make a lot of things in decent countries at the same price point as that said "thing" is being sold for now except now it's being made in a third world country or something similar for cheaper. I've never owned a Marshall, but i would love too so i do see where you are coming from as the older ones (even the Valvestates) were made in England. It's like guitars. The high end mid-tier ones are made in South Korea now and not Japan anymore. It does suck. Those can cost $1000 or more too.

      They do it with the dsl series because it's they're affordable series and the prices would be higher if they were made in England. If you want English made marshalls in this style just buy a jvm and pay a whole lot more

    Yep...only the real 60s and early 70s Marshalls sound any good at all. Best version I've ever owned,and I've owned many, was the MKII super lead heads made from 1971 to 1974. Non of the re-issues sound anything like the originals. Apparently health n safety won't allow it...lol

    • @rickleblanc8900

      I agree. Marshalls from the 60s and 70s are the real deal. Back in the day my friend had a 50 watt 70s plexi head and it was heavenly! Late 70s i picked up a 100 watt JMP Master Volume used but mint condition for $335! Through a 1960AX cab and using a Gibson Flying V , mind boggingly awesome. To this day i regret selling my rig and wish i still had it, nothing i own now comes even close.... Dammit!

    Marshall just don't make em like they used to!! Want proof? Compare this new korean one to a UK made MKII Super lead 50 or 100w head from the early 70s, or at a push a JCM800 100w head. They are what a proper Marshall sounds like. ....😎🎸👍

      Joe Bloggs this is not Korean....obviously it's not gonna sound like a Plexi or a 800. That's why it costs 800 dollars. It's for people who want a Marshall-esque sound, at an affordable price.

      Joe Bloggs Sure if you are stuck in the 70’s or want that sound. A lot of new guys don’t care for old rock. They want new shit with new sounds. We’d still be stuck driving Model T’s if it weren’t for technology advancing. Everybody can’t be Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Bb King, Jeff Beck, Zack Wylde , Slash, or Eddie Hazel.
