I know the laws of the game say stalling is a yellow, but I think by the time the third guy comes around, I tell them the next person to take more than 20 seconds is getting a red card.
I feel you. Sometimes time wasting is just way too effective and in those cases I really want the ref to overrule certain parts. The third guy out there time wasting gets a straight red.
I wondered what would have happened if nobody had walked up to the corner. Is the ref just gonna book everyone if nobody goes to take it? The team still has the corner, you can't take that away can you?

@@SirEEf13 technically he could take it away because until the ball is back in play, he is allowed to change his call. I certainly wouldn't exoect it unless this becomes wide spread.

In Australian Rules Football, delaying the game is either a free kick to the other team (if the team in possession is wasting time) or a 50m penalty (if the defending team is wasting time - kicking the ball away or not retreating from the spot or whatever). No need for yellow cards. Imagine a goalie wasting time at a goal kick and then the other team gets a corner, or a free kick for offside becoming an attacking free for the other team. In this case, the first time wasting would’ve resulted in a goal kick. No more shenanigans.

Add the wasted time to the end of the game so they have to play it anyway, but with enough cards for a round of poker.
It wasn't done to waste time, it was done because the players in question were 1 card away from a suspension. The next game was a cup game against a 3rd division side, and the game after that was a top-of-the-table clash. It was also nearing the end of the season, so they needed all those players to be on a clean slate
It would still give them a mental edge tho

@@Skinny_Popeye Fun fact, actually, Sundowns are the only South African team never to be knocked out of a cup competition by a team not playing in the top division. They've also won the last 6 league titles, and are currently unbeaten this season on their way to a seventh straight title. They are basically the PSG of South Africa. They didn't struggle against the lower league side at all.

An equally funny but more on-the-book timewasting already happened in the Rome derby in March 2011. Roma leading 1-0, an unusually cool Totti who was getting fouled all game kept the ball near the corner flag for almost 4 minutes, getting a couple corners, free kicks and a Radu red card in the process. Roma got a penalty (and another Lazio red card) less than a minute after Lazio got the ball back which Totti scored.

Edit after actually watching the Video: I feel like the Pandoras Box already has been opened latest with the last 5 or so minutes of the Womens Euros Finale 2022 between England and Germany. After England went up 2-1 they just stood by their own corner, shielding the ball with like three players at a time. While the ball technically was in play, that easily was the most disgusting time wasting I've ever seen.
(And yes, I hate Chloe Kelly to this day.)

I wish the rules would allow increasing punishment for consecutive time wasting. If you're on your 3rd attempt to take THE SAME corner the next guy to time waste is getting a red.
The only possible escalation would be for nobody to walk up to the corner,. I'd really like to know what would have happened then. Is the ref just gonna book everyone if nobody goes to take it? Can he take the corner away from you and call goal kick? Is he allowed to do anything or is that actually a loophole to time wasting?
If there were justice in the world, this nonsense would somehow manifest in FM when Z is chasing whatever cup final he's next in.

So funny you mention the World Cup semi-final, as time wasting already impacted one. 2018 semi France v Belgium, the momentum was somewhat in Belgium's favor as stoppage time began in a 1-0 match. Mbappe is trapped in his corner and gives up a throw to Belgium, where he immediately dribbles the ball away, then picks it up, tosses it towards the goal, dribbles it a bit more and then as Belgium players come to physically stop him he cheekily back heels it towards the side. He gets a yellow for his obvious and ridiculous time wasting in a hugely important match at a hugely important time, but this punishment is literally pointless. If anything, the time taken to give the card to Mbappe is beneficial to France, as in the World Cup all card accumulation is reset after the semis. So as long as Mbappe doesn't do something monumentally stupid and get a 2nd yellow before the end of the match, he's not only not been punished in any real way, but his 'punishment' actually padded the time he was wasting

giving out a yellow card for time wasting doesn't solve the issue since, as the clip showed, you can just have a different player do the exact same thing, rinse and repeat as many times as you want/need. Now if teams got hit with a red card, you'd see how quickly they'd quit the time wasting shenanigans

I would have informed the captain, that all subsequent time wasting (after the first) would be a caution and later a red card on him.
Make the game 60 minutes with two 30 min halves. Every time the ball goes out of play or play stops for some reason, stop the clock... No more time wasting, no more fake injuries. Many problems solved.

Switching to pure playing time will solve this. This is an over the top example of course, but time wasting happens in every game. There are so many quality of game, enjoyment and speed improvements to the rules that can be made to solve the sluggish and trollish moments in any football game, but FIFA and the footballing world in general are so conservative that it just does not happen. Van Basten tried to do this from inside FIFA, but got nowhere. The only big change that happened relatively recently is the implementation of VAR and this has slowed the game down even further.
Why not just take a short corner and hold the ball in the corner, or do it as well

Another point proving why American football has a better rule set. In cases like this until the player makes a kick or pass, the time should be stopped. It isn't fun to watch, it isn't good for sportsmanship and just makes the whole game look like a clown fiesta.
at the third guy the referee might have needed to give 2 yellow cards one for the time waste for not taking the corner the other for time wasting leaving the corner
The time will all be added back on at the end anyway if the referee is half decent. Not only was it petty and stupid, but it was completely pointless.
