    Let's be serious, when I want to protect my hands from cold I use dry gloves

  • @timgosling6189

    Here in UK it's gloves every time, and for some years I stayed with 5mm neoprene gloves, but still got cold fingers after 30 minutes or so. Now I use dry gloves and they are indeed as good as everyone says, for both warmth and dexterity. But as you say with your protective gloves, the outer latex gloves are silly expensive from Scuba suppliers. Looking up the product code on the wrist I confirmed they are actually Marigold washing-up gloves. So you can buy spares for £8 from a Scuba supplier or less than £2 per pair in your local supermarket.

    Another reason a person wears gloves, falls in the warm category, I have had several hand injuries and have poor circulation in them. Even in 80 degree water my fingers can turn white. A lot of carribbean dive sites I have to get permission to wear gloves prior to the first dive.

    I use a pair of six dollar gloves here in Australia I picked up a Bunnings which is the Hope Depot equivalent here. They work great and protect my fingers and hands form cuts.

    When it start to be cold (e.g. under the ice) dry gloves are not necessarily enough. Therefore I use electrically heated undergloves (by Santi) to keep my hands warm but dextremity... BIG boltsnaps are then a must.

    Good suggestions on the gloves from hardware store.
    What's the water temp get to in Florida in winter? 70? 72? degrees F? Try summer water temps here in California at 52-54 F :D

    I'm not trying to be a jerk, but for a dive channel from a tech instructor I think you should have videos of better divers. Both people had horrible trim. Even going up an anchor line you should still have good trim.
    But I will look at the Bare gloves. Being in So Cal, I do have trouble with the bolt snaps. GUE requires you to only use 1 hand as well.

    Good luck cutting through a net or any thicker rope with any of those options. Try a victorinox or dexter serrated net knife next time. Those are actual knives that all divers should carry on them

    Interesting video just in time when I have to decide what gloves to wear, thanks James!!! Also, what about the idea that I am being told I should always wear gloves since, under water, everything either bites, is itchy, stings or cuts (besides nothing should be touched) ? Any thoughts on this?

    Hey James, any tips on how to stop my Si Tech dry gloves from leaking? They stay dry about 25 % of the time. ( 1 or both ). I ended up getting a pr of Bare 5mm with their new Celliant IR technology. Very warm gloves. I am in the Pac NW. 8C is an average temp I am diving in.

    Home Depot 4 for $10 gloves are awesome. I generally only use gloves on Wrecks and when I dive WAY up north. Did back to back 2 hour Deco dives in Florida Caverns and the hands never got cold.

    Hi James...have you tried an exowear top and/or bottoms? The zippered jacket with or without a rash guard is absolutely perfect for Florida diving. Easy to put and and take off and cuts the wind chill darn near completely. Makes getting out of the water more pleasant. Not at all sponsored, but I highly recommend it. Cheers and happy holidays!

    Nice. Might have to check out those Bare gloves. For many dives I do use speardiving gloves from Mako Spearguns - but they are fair priced like $5 - $15! I usually buy a bunch for my diving, spearo and freediving activity.

    The other type of glove you didn't mention are kevlar gloves. They are required for places like the Galapagos where you need to grip onto the lava rock in ripping current. Plain neoprene gloves would be shredded in minutes.

    Up here in Oklahoma, we have zebra mussels. They do the same thing as the razor mussels. For gloves, I use a pair that is used in the local tire production plant that are puncture resistant.

    A Scuba Instructor friend of mine packs gloves in his BCD pocket even when gloves aren’t allowed because he’s had bad cuts on his hands from getting back onto the boat. In his experience, the crew/guides haven’t said anything against it. He’s respectful of their wishes of not diving with them, but doesn’t want to leave nasty scrapes from getting out of the water. Awesome video! Keep up the fine efforts.

      I just wear mine. I'm tired of charters telling me no gloves or knives. It's silly. We are around rusty metal wrecks, fishing tackle, animals that could harm us, and we come last for safety. Please. So annoying.

    • @shuntao3475
      @shuntao3475 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kylegrimm8808 As James stated, its not the Charters but the LAW. Many Marine Sanctuaries are popping up. Much of the Dive Reefs in Key Largo have been destroyed by Touchie divers. Add Cozumel to the list, dive boats will not let your drop.
      That said, even in sanctuaries, I have not been told I can not wear gloves on a Wreck.

    • @kylegrimm8808
      @kylegrimm8808 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shuntao3475 I know the charters are just telling us, but it's not just touchie divers. Especially in the keys, every time a storm comes through those reefs get destroyed. Everything is always the divers fault. It's annoying to be treated like children. Been diving the keys for over 20 years. They keep getting worse along with the industry.

    • @shuntao3475
      @shuntao3475 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kylegrimm8808 I can not disagree with your opinion, but we have to do something. I rarely ever see the need for gloves. Even in Florida Caves, yes my hands get beat up, but whatever. Talk about the Great Barrier Reefs, we hear all about Global warming killing it. I have talked to several natives divers there and they say its the starfish killing it. But there is no money for the scientist is its not global warming. One girl said, send 10.000 divers down for a few weeks and we can correct the problem. Obviously it will take decades to repair though.

    • @kylegrimm8808
      @kylegrimm8808 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shuntao3475 it's always what they are not talking about that is the problem. Too many plastics and trash. But they go after what they can control, blame the diver. We see the same strategy in the hunting community. Hunters are the biggest advocates for conservation, but the gov always goes after them with stupid regulations. If I want a piece of reef, a glove isn't going to stop me. Over 20 years diving there, I can't think of one time I saw a diver break a piece of coral off. Irma did move some wrecks 200 feet and rolled spiegal grove upright, but it's those pesky divers causing all the problems.

    Mech Gloves are not the same gloves as the hammerhead gloves, the hammerhead gloves last about 5 times as long there for costing the same with less waste. I am an avoid spear fisherman and mech gloves last 3-4 trips. Please support your local dive shops and stop buying things online like this channel often recommends. and remember you cant get air fills online. Any price you see on amazon can be matched or even beaten by your local dive shop, they get their equipment from the same vender.
