    I don't know if this describes anyone else. But this is one of those radios where at first sight I had zero interest. Then after looking at it a couple more times. After reading a little bit more about it...well I'm now in the mindset where I'll be purchasing this one real soon. It appears that my guitar, gun, watch and scuba gear collections will be taking a backseat to my newest hobby.

    I just installed one of these after watching this video.
    All I can say is, OMG.
    Not only does it sound better, I gain at least an S unit on receive.
    Make my TX sound better too.

    In my FT-857D and FT-897D with both 2.9 filters installed I did extra: put down the amlification factor on 455 khz- shunted
    the last two rf amps by resistors, ~10 k, all capacitors in sound amp are increesed in 10 and more times...
    The result is unic.. All Hi-Fi stations sound like in concert hall...

    Thanks for sharing. I have a FT-857/ATAS-120 in my truck. This radio is quite impressive with all the features packed into such a small package. I've worked a lot of DX-mobile & am more than pleased with the setup. I have worked Indonesia SSB/Mobile, as well as many other DX stations across Asia, Africa, Europe, SA, etc. I'm often asked what I'm operating from & some of the contacts are baffled. Stock setup. I do have the truck RF-grounded quite well. The counterpoise makes a huge difference.

      +thejohnalien60 WORST combination I have ever used or owned & I would not have another one even for FREE.Glad you like yours but I consider both the 857D & the Atas 120A GARBAGE!

    I use 2.7 and 2.9 in my 857. It`s great on the HF. I get some great reports when I stick the 2.9 in and fully load the ft-817 for portable work!

    It`s great filter. I fancy the 2.0 filter too... 2.7 is great too! My 857 (not D Version) being using it for 11 years now no problems...

    Great video! I am a new general and am trying to narrow down the HF rigs to choose from for a first rig. Lots of practical knowledge in your video. Thanks and looking forward to your next video.

    Great video. So the 2.9 filter works better than the 2.3 or a 2.0 filter? Not sure what to get for my 857D.

      Yes ED, There are times when you want a more narrow filter and the stock filter fills that option.
      Hope to catch you on the air.

Thanks Jerry 4 post.

    I did not see a 2.9 kHz filter on W4RT's site. The Inrad site has it as item #726. Is this the filter you are using? Strictly for SSB, you are saying that the 2.9 is superior to the 2.3? Great video, by the way. I am tired of people referring to the 857 as being deaf. I have 2 Yaesu radios, and love them. I'm thinking of the 857 as a purchase for /P and /M.

    will probably get the 2.9 Inrad filter for mine. Having said that though, I have been disappointed in the SSB receive audio. Like another person said, connecting it to a good 'full range' speaker helps immensely. Wonder what speaker this one is using?

    Nice job on the 2.9 demo. I love my 857 and will be looking for you in a couple of days on the air during the ARRL Field Day event 2017. Cheers! K1GMM

    Wow, you are right Mr. Koch. I’ll be looking for a 2.9 filter for the 897D
    Wish me luck. I will search for a model number for that 2.9 filter.

    Is there a reason your 857D screen is blue as apposed to orange? Perhaps it is orange, and either the room lighting or camera used makes it appear blue in the video?

  • @mrdesone
    @mrdesone 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    What external speaker you have on your 857D. Sounds good....

  • @slartybardfarst52
    @slartybardfarst52 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice! , I take it your using an external speaker, I have the 897 but the internal speaker makes people sound unnatural, I have a 500hz CW filter in mine so may get myself one of these for the spare slot, and as you say you can set it up for TX also, I often use my 1000mp 6khz wide on receive and it sounds amazing when people are using a bit more bandwidth on transmit.

    In your video, are you using the stock radio's speaker?
    On inrad.net the #726 filter? is this the only site to buy this filter?
    I messed with my radio to see if I could get my radio to sound as yours does, just with the stock filter, didn't get it to sound like yours does in the video. I'm making a request of a Elmer video on this radio for menu settings. you have just opened a can of worms here!
    thank you for the video!

    That's the Clarifier, not the IF Shift, big difference! Your effectively tuning up and down on the receiver while leaving the transmitter at the same frequency, as compared to the IF Shift, where you shift the spectrum received up or down to knotch the frequency.

    • @lmaoroflcopter
      @lmaoroflcopter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      no. it's the IF Shift.
      1. he held down the clarifier button for longer than 1 second until the second beep... activating the IF Shift mode which is the alternate function of the clarifier button.
      2. the symbol shown on the display (right of frequency) is that shown when the IF Shift is performed vs the clarifier arrows.

    2.9kc is a good choice for quality SSB Ham receive. So many hams go overboard with trying to achieve hi-fi. Most professional studio mics like the SM-7, RE-27 etc have a response out to 20kc. Yet your average SSB ham transceivers won't tx or hear past about 3kc. So, what's the point? The same is true of professional EQ's, mixers, compressors, etc. It's a waste of money. Compressors can be effective for cutting through noise. But, they don't enhance fidelity, they compromise it.

      ***** It's nice having an adjustable filter so that you may enjoy those signals that are a little wider than the average signals. Most of the time I leave filter # 1 on my ICOM 7600 set at 3.6 ,filter # 2 at 2.6,& filter # 3 I adjust it all over the place depending on what's happening on the bands.I like the variety that the radio allows me.It's by far the most AWESOME HF/6 meter radio I've ever owned of operated.

    Hi Mike...You have to buy the 2.9 filter from Inrad in order to open up the audio.
    It's a plug and play and your radio will pick it up automatically.
    Makes it sound like the big boys...I don't use the built in equalizer.
