There was a test set used by Bell Canada in the 70s based on a Contempra phone handset. There was obviously added switches but the cord was practically the same as a 1950 Western Electric.

Thanks Mike. I find this legacy stuff interesting. I worry we’re losing all the Ma Bell tribal knowledge. Someday, the workforce will be made up of techs that haven’t worked with POTS. 😟

What do the 2 handset loop test sets do?

Thank you for the info, i’m new to Telecom. Is there a butt set or another way to see what extension you’re hooking up to. (Other than calling the operator and asking every time) I have about 70 different analog phones at my job and would like to label some of the lines when they go into the conduits. Thanks

Keaton, I feel your pain. To answer your question it really depends on the system. Some have little short cut codes you can dial to have the phone show you the extension on the display. If they are all analog, then calling the receptionist (or some other nearby phone )with a display) is probably about the only way. Maybe a cordless phone that would display the calling extension #?

@@DIYTelecom I remember back in the early 2000s on DMS provisioned PSTN, you could dial 2000 and it would read your ANI. I use (800) 444-4444 now. Also, do you remember NPA-780-6321 for ringback?

I wonder if you could setup a ANAC (Automatic Number Announcement Circuit) on your system..
