- Here are 10 autumn leaves viewing spots in Akita Prefecture, where there are many hidden gems known only to those in the know!
Akita Prefecture has many sightseeing spots bordering on neighboring prefectures such as "Hachimantai," "Lake Towada," and "Shirakami Sanchi." Although there are not many nationally known autumn leaves viewing spots in Akita Prefecture, there are many hidden places that are well known by local people. Enjoy the spectacular autumn leaves at "Lake Tazawa" and " Toudou Falls," which are the pride of Akita Prefecture!

■Akita Hachimantai, Onuma ( Late September to Late October )
Hachimantai is a plateau volcano straddling Iwate and Akita Prefectures, and is one of the "100 most famous mountains in Japan.
Onuma Swamp is located halfway up the Akita Prefecture side of Hachimantai, and the area has been selected as one of the "100 best forest bathing forests. There is also a nature trail that circles around the swamp, which can be completed in about 30 minutes on foot, passing through the forest.
■Tamagawa Onsen ( Mid-October to early November )
Tamagawa Onsen is a hot spring located at the foot of the Akita Prefecture side of the Hachimantai Mountains. Strongly acidic spring water gushes out from a gush called a "big spout" and is popular as a therapeutic hot spring because of its abundant hot spring water and its beneficial effects.
■Hosenko Lake ( Mid-October to early November )
Hosenko Lake is an artificial lake formed by the construction of the Tamagawa Dam, and its name comes from the fact that the submerged area was called "Hosen-daira.
■Lake Tazawa and Tazawako Plateau ( mid-October to early November )
Lake Tazawa is located in the central-eastern part of Akita Prefecture, and its maximum depth is 423.4 m, making it the deepest lake in Japan. Tazawako Kogen is a hot spring resort located east of Lake Tazawa, offering a panoramic view of Lake Tazawa. On the way from Tazawako Kogen to Nyuto Onsen area, a large secondary beech forest is protected.
■Lake Towada ( Mid to late October )
Lake Towada is a caldera lake straddling Aomori and Akita Prefectures, and is designated as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" by the government. Hakkatouge, located on the Akita Prefecture side of the lake, is introduced here.
■Shirakami Sanchi - Dakedai Nature Observation and Education Forest ( mid- to late-October )
Dakedai Nature Observation and Education Forest is a 12-hectare virgin beech forest located in Fujisato-cho, Akita Prefecture, where visitors can easily experience the beech forests of the World Heritage Site, Shirakami Sanchi.
■Kimimachizaka Park ( Mid-October to early November )
Kimimachizaka Park is a scenic spot in Noshiro City in northern Akita Prefecture, famous for autumn leaves in fall, where the precipitous cliffs of Byoubu Iwa rise up along the Yondai River running east to west.
■Toudo Falls ( Mid to late October )
Toudo Falls is a waterfall at the foot of Moriyoshi Mountain in the eastern part of Akita Prefecture. With a drop of about 20 meters, it is also known as "Metaki" (female waterfall) .
■Soya Gorge ( Late October - Early November )
Soya Gorge is located right in the middle of Akita Prefecture and has been selected as one of the "100 best autumn leaves in Japan".
■Akinomiya Onsenkyo, Yunomata Great Falls ( late October - early November )
Yunomata Great Falls, located near Akinomiya Onsenkyo in southern Akita Prefecture, is a large waterfall with a drop of about 40 meters and belongs to the Yuzawa Geopark.

30年以上前です。玉川ダム建設中に訪れ、宝仙湖となる場所をドライブした事があります。
至るところに水芭蕉が群生しており、川が流れる脇の未舗装道路を走りました。
何とも言えない穏やかな情景が広がっていました。そこから玉川温泉に上がる道程。
遥か先に今から行くであろうアーチ橋が見えたりする光景に胸躍ったものです。
因みに、数年後に訪れた湯瀬渓谷という所も素晴らしかったです。
