In this video, we install zippers to make three doors on the tent, we build an awning and do a few other final touches to the fabric. I hope this is another helpful video for you guys. I know its a bit repetitive with the taping and folding and then sewing but I'm just trying to keep things simple! Let me know if you have any questions! Patrick you did a good job I wanted to let you know the 4 poles you placed for the awning you could have done one as a hoop all the way around the awning. Just an idea but love love the camp trailer awesome job.

This whole series is amazing and very educational. I have two suggestions on your doors. 1) The main door should have zipper pulls from the top as well for a high level venting in the summer. 2) if your side doors were reversed the open door flap could be held by the tent lid and the extra fabric won't cause sagging along the longest fabric span.

Two suggestions SEAR or melt ALL edges of nylon material that was cut, prevents raveling. And maybe just start with a 4 inch wide piece of heavier material where the zippers would go to widen and reinforce the area so you would not have to readjust tent mounting and would strengthen zipper area that will get a lot of abuse.I made a couple of Frostline kits in High school so I might have an hour more experience then you. Very nice job on everything and I'm sure that you have kick started a lot of RTT's being made by the average Joe's out there...

Brilliant effort mate! Looks great and functional. Make sure to fit the 'receivers' for the rods and use an epoxy on the wood before you push in the tubes... seals the timber and stops water ingress. Awesome stuff, cheers for sharing :)
Just a thought, if you have more material then you could make a separate (hem?) and tape it in between the zipper and the tent hem. Doing it on both sides of the zipper would give you the same hidden zipper as the main door zippers. Just an idea 💡.

Great video bud! Very informative. I’ve build six teardrops of various sizes and designs. Love them but think it’s Tim I build one of these. I like your first one due to the overall shape. This one is great too but there’s a few more of us lol. Keep it up, can’t wait to see what’s up next with you!
Just a tip (all pro sewers do this), please put in a reverse stitch of about an inch when you begin and end sewing = locks the stitches in place (stops the thread from unravelling) + use a piece of extra material at the zip (both ends) for strength - also, it might an idea to use press studs instead of screws (if you have to keep removing the ripstop all the time for sewing purposes) - BTW your doing a good job!
Awesome job on this. I've been considering building one of these for a while using the old felt & fiberglass over light wood frame. Love the paste you made with wood dust. And congratulations on becoming a dad... it's the best thing ever. Stay safe & thank you

I've been wanting to do this for a couple years and watching you go through these different ones I'm going to build one kind of like what you have there but I am going to try to make mine out of fiberglass build a molding and make the bottom and then on the top make a little bit of a push out so it overlaps the bottom and hopefully with some rivets and some other things I'll make this work if anybody has any ideas about it please let me know again I think you're awesome

You did a great job on this build. I've been looking for some guidance on the fabric aspect of a rooftop tent build. Appreciate your time making these videos.
If you put a length of elastic centrally around the tent it will pull the fabric in when you close it. A lot of clamshell RTT’s utilise this simple design
I was thinking the same thing. should keep it tight but forgiving.

Guessing you should seam seal the stitches for the zippers and the storm flaps? Since those all represent lots of tiny holes in the outside of the tent. Looks awesome.

Thank you, many great tips. But when sewing on a zipper, it is much better to sew it on, along the outer edge before you cut the fabric open.
Then once you have sewn the zipper into place along the outer edge, you will cut the fabric from the other side. On the other side there will now be two paralell rows of stitches, you will now cut the fabric in the middle of those two rows of stitches, then fold the edge of the fabric you just cut, and sew it into place, exposing the zipper.
That way the zipper will lay perfectly flat on the fabric, and the two pieces of fabric zipped together will be perfectly aligned.

I’m not planning on building a rooftop tent, but I do want to build a rustic cabin on a 20 ft trailer. I need to save weight as the cabin will be on the front of the trailer and the back will be room for my Harley, I think the filler and Epoxy will really help keep the weight down
Awesome! For something like that also get some 6in fiberglass tape to put in the corners. It will really help with strength and stiffness. It's basically just 6in strips of fiberglass. You just mix your epoxy and wet out the tape in your corners on top of your epoxy filets. Boatbuilder Central is a great place to source what you need!

And on that side door where you put that extra little piece of material you should put in a little bit of elastic in there and that'll pull that and keep it down if the wind blows and you've got water coming from the same direction the wind is blowing and it's blowing into that zipper that would help to keep it full shut so you won't wouldn't get so much in there

That cat is nuts. A feral black female moved in with me (after her shots, etc.!) and she climbs up a lilac bush and goes up on the roof of my house. Why?! She's nuts too.
For each screw that you use to mount the tent fabric to the RTT, you might want to put small grommets in there, that will help keep the tent from ripping on really windy days.

If you run a length of thin cord down the inside of that folded fabric, it'll prevent the zipper from getting caught up in the fabric

hook and loops (Velcro) on the bottom of the doors will help seal it from rain. put the hook part on the wood

....I would have just used cardboard templates for doors and windows with bug screens folding down for windows! Looks beautiful!

Hi there, on the side doors to put the zippers you make the cut and then add a strip of cloth with double hem to the one side of the cut and zipper to cover all the way the zipped seam
Buy the bungee cord to wrap around your tent it will pull it in when you close it so you don't have to tuck it in, it will do automatically. Great job though, I like it.

I looked in the classifieds and there's some roof luggage boxes of 600 liters and 500 liters up to 220cm x 88cm x 30cm, for about 100 USD, there's loads of choice of them.

Also, I might try sheets of styrofoam on the lid frame with fiberglass for weather protection/ strength. Might save wright
Take some paracord and attach it inside where the hinge is and have it so it reaches the backdoor then as you close the tent you pull the paracord and it brings the hex70 in to make it close by one person.
31:35 A laser level would help with setting that tape up. ;-) Love the build. I'm gonna have to build one myself.

Hello, Patrick. Great work! Could you please explain the reason you've made the first variant of the tent with the cover that can be rolled up all around and then the second one with the uplift only from one side? You didn't like the first soltuion? It wasn't save enough? Why?

No, I know its confusing but in the finished product video I announced the Build series but said It wouldn't be that first design. I originally thought that the clamshell design would be easier to do and explain. It's not at all easier It's just different. Although, the hardshell for the first tent is built almost the exact same way as the clamshell that I'm building now. The only real difference is that one has 4 lifting arms and the other has a hinge and struts. I could convert this clamshell over to that box design if I wanted to. (might have to do that in a later video)

In regards to possibly securing the flap to the bottom, maybe sew in some magnetic strips and have magnets on the bottom of the platform so when you zip it up it'll just magnetically attach

At 29:10 you mention trying to get the side door zipper covers to lay flatter. Is there room inside the ribbon edge to thread in some elastic cord? I think that would keep those covers flatter, and keep them from flapping in wind, while still leaving the zippers accessible.

the only thing I could say is those awning poles should be a little thicker they will only buckle and flap in the wind but other then that you've done a wicked job mate

After about a year of what I hope for you, has been a year of use and enjoyment of your rooftop tent, how are things holding up, particularly the fabric you chose? I've started a foldout, tag along motorcycle tent, and I'm undecided on the fabric. Noticed the scooter in another of your videos, so that might be something for you to consider. My bad mate, didn't read everything 👍 only downside I can see it's trying to tidy the cut edges up to stop fraying, but straight edge and heat sounds like a good place to start
Or roll up edge piping and glue anther option I can think of
