The 1907 BLÜTHNER concert grand allows us to hear the very soundscape for which Rachmaninoff and many other European and Russian composers of that era composed. The instrument's vast depth in the bass, the sorcery woven by its veiled, yet crystal-clear treble, and its ability to keep contrasting, dense strands in any score audible single the Blüthner out from all other makes of piano. Debussy owned two Blüthners; after 1903, he wrote all his piano scores on them. Shostakovich, Medtner, and a host of other pianist-composers relied on Blüthner instruments for their clarity and great sonic beauty, as well as for the direct emotional appeal of these remarkable pianos. This Leipzig firm is still active and is now back in the hands of family members.
