  • Unpopular with the establishment because he was Australian, Jewish and only a part time soldier before the war, Sir John was respected and admired by those who knew better. His outstanding organisation and planning skills did much to bring this ghastly conflict to an early end. His regard for the well being of the front line soldier was a breath of fresh air. It's not unreasonable to suggest that numbers of Australians living today may not have been born if it was not for this great military leader.
