Just so you know Hand sanitizer does not kill norovirus! It might be wise to bring a tiny itty bitty bottle of soap. I would also recommend a tiny pack towel to clean up any accidents or a multitude of other purpose, plus you can wrap your fuel canister in it because of all the moisture on the AT they rust pretty easily. But I loved seeing all the thrifted finds! A very inexpensive and green way to get outside.

YES, they don’t kill Giardia or Clostridium either and the biodegradable soaps are better for the environment.

Ditch the sanitizer all together and use Dr. Bronner's to wash up.

Yay Kim, you got some great gear there and I'm sure you are going to have a great hike. I will be cheering for you while dealing with "fun" visitors at Assateague.

Glad to see someone else with the Peregrines. The 10s were my all time favorite but I’m now wearing the 12s. Slightly narrower cut and I’m also a little concerned about durability. Best of luck!

I’m having similar concerns about the 12s! When I saw them I was off put by the new material they’re using for the tread and sole of the shoe because it looks and feels less grippy. It’s a harder rubber so it will last longer than the really soft rubber on the 11s but I haven’t had any durability issues with my current pairs!

I got a awesome sleeping pad pump at Rei but sadly they don't sean to have it on there site anymore . its was a manual foot pump that packed down small and was a bit of foam in a bag it worked for all diferant pads i hope REI brings it back.

    Great list!
Be aware that the padstraps from your quilt have nothing to do with roling of your pad. Know how to use them well as they have a totally different purpose 😉 and otherwise you might be very cold at night
Happy and safe trails from the Netherlands 🐾

Thank you, yeah that wasn't the best way I could have phrased that. They're definitely for keeping the quilt secured around me to prevent drafts!

Get Opsak to go inside your Ursak. Opsak provides odor protection. Happy Trails!

Nice video. If you switch to an Otter Box case you might need to also change your phone pouch. My Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra with full Otter Box (with the belt clip on it) wouldn't fit in my HMG pouch. I had to get a Chicken Tramper zipper pouch (I got the sewn version since it is slightly larger than the seam sealed version... also, don't get the Chicken Tramper "phone pouch"... the one with the velcro closure. It can get rain in the edges). I like the Otter Box with belt clip on it when hiking to protect the phone face in case I fall. I bought several phone pouches until I found the Chicken Tramper zipper pouch to fit my phone and case.

Ooh that’s good to know. I might just stick with the Pela case then and use a trick I learned in high school where to keep sweat out of the phone when running with it in an armband we kept it in ziplocks!

Has Garmin reduced the monthly cost of the service yet since the new iPhone does satellite now?

Take your time and be careful. The ticks are dangerous. A hiker on the AT has already come down with Lyme disease. Treat your gear and outer clothing with Permethrin monthly or sooner. There are 9 tick borne diseases now. Anaplasmosis is very nasty, it killed my wife 6 years ago. The ticks are very tiny. I've been tick sick 8 times and never saw the ticks that got me. Good Luck, Rick

My condolences about your wife 💞 I have family members who’ve had Lyme and that’s a big part of the reason I’m so cautious about it and I’m going to be extra careful this year!

Hi Kim, can we take advantage of the pre-planning and extensive research you've conducted on your upcoming AT thru-hike? So, how much is the "ideal and practical" budget (ballpark $$) that one needs to save to support the entirety of an AT-thru-hike journey?
    Good luck with your endeavor!

    • @kimoutdoors
      @kimoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah sure, none of this is official research but more so my observations and thought processes. It depends on how long you expect to be out for. Conventional wisdom a few years ago was $1,000/month of estimated hiking but with riding prices, start dates creeping forward to February necessitating more days off trail for weather, a lot of people have started budgeting more. I budgeted close to $1,500/month for my hike.
