    Spanish and Portuguese have greater compatibility than Spanish and Italian. This video is proof. The Mexican kid talked with the Brazilian kid for much longer than the Italian one.

    • @jsphat81
      @jsphat81 8 ปีที่แล้ว +362

      Clay Kim yeah, I realized that on another video of them,but still, Brazilians understand most Spanish with little effort. Spanish speakers usually struggle more to understand Portuguese but with a conversation as basic as this one the intelligibility will be close to 90 percent.

    • @jsphat81
      @jsphat81 8 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Clay Kim True.Those exist. Usually the ones who don't get exposed to it at all. The phonetics of both languages are very different and there will be people from both sides who will understand little to none of the other language due to no prior exposure to it. It does take a little bit of "decoding" from both sides to begin to understand the other language but once you've been exposed to the other language a few times, start paying attention and make comparisons to your own language, comprehension will become significantly easier. It's still usually easier for Portuguese speakers due to their language having more sounds than Spanish and Spanish having a more simplified phonology. I also notice the greater interest Brazilians and Portuguese folks show in learning Spanish as opposed to most Latin Americans and Spaniards in learning Portuguese.

      +jsphat81 so true but strangely enough Italian is more compatible with portuguese than spanish.
      However it only works with european portuguese because the brazilian accent is much like the spanish in which it wraps the tongue and drags the words so they become unrecognisable for the italians (also both, brazilians and spanish, have to open the mouth more to speak as if they are exaggerating the words)
      That brazilian guy was awesome though, usually brazilians struggle to understand european portuguese and the spanish is even harder.
      But in european portuguese (portugal) the mouth is more closed and the language is very straight forward (the way you write it is EXACTLY how you say it!) which makes their words sound harsher (a bit like russian) and the accent becomes cleaner.
      Since the accent is cleaner the portuguese can easily recognise similar words between languages and mimic accents. And spanish, portuguese, italian and french all share their latim origin, a little bit like chinese, japanese and korean sharing the chinese characters (Hanzi, kanji, hanja).
      Sadly this only works one way, the european portuguese can easily understand spanish and italian and with a slight effort the french.
      But because spanish, french and italian have more complex accents they cannot understand each other nor much of the portuguese language (only a few broken words).

    • @jsphat81
      @jsphat81 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      ARossXauXau I take it you must be Italian. Interesting to hear that Italian has greater compatibility with Portuguese than it does with Spanish. I always hear the opposite. It was my impression that Spanish sort of always stood between Portuguese and Italian in the sense that it was always easier for Italians and Spaniards to understand one another than for both to understand Portuguese. It's interesting you also mention BR Portuguese and Spanish dragging out words. I always thought standard Italian did that as well, which is what makes it easier for many Spanish natives to understand it than European or Brazilian Portuguese. European Portuguese sounds very nice and proper but their omission of vowels when they speak plus their often fast style of speaking make it very difficult to understand for everyone else. I was under the impression that for an Italian it would sound like Slavic gibberish just like it does for most Spanish speakers (and some Brazilians, too).

    • @ARossXauXau
      @ARossXauXau 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +jsphat81 As a matter of fact I'm portuguese!
      From the conversation above I think you might be north american (either born or educated) with some understanding of brazilian portuguese and possibly some spanish roots (either south or central america but definetly not mexican nor argentinean) how's that ? did I get close?
      _
      You're right, the italians seem to drag the words a bit like the spanish, except they don't. Confusing right?! But think of the italian accent like a song instead and it's gonna start to make sense. So they are not dragging the sound, but intoning the words instead.
      You may find it easier, if you listen to italians speaking in other languages like some first generation italian-americans. Even in a small conversation or just saying some loose words, you can notice how they still keep the song, they keep intoning the words and its actually hard for them not to do it. It's something so natural to them that they don't even realise it.
      You said that portuguese talk fast and eat the vowels, european portuguese seems to be indeed faster than brazilian portuguese, which is more layed back.I don't know, if you had the chance to listen to european spanish, but I assure you it is about 3xfaster than european portuguese; the people from Madrid, spanish capital, are notorious for being fast paced speakers even by Spanish standarts. Italian is slower paced than european spanish and closer pace to portuguese.
      _
      However they do not eat vowels not even in slang, but there's a reason you and others think they do!
      *(O-K, this is turning into one of those massive comments that everyone strays away from...sorry about that but it's gonna make some sense at the end...hopefully!)
      -
      Back to "eating vowels"
      There are only 2 reasons why people would think that:
      -
      1. Both Madeira and Azores, portuguese archipelagos, are home to heavy, muffled accents, very difficult to understand even for mailand portuguese. In North and South America there are big communities of portuguese immigrants and the majority is originally from these islands, so people coming across them will think that european portuguese has a muffled sound and that portuguese eat the vowels when speaking.
      _
      2. If you learn spanish or brazillian portuguese before learning european portuguese you will struggle with the timing of the language. Remember I said european portuguese is very straight forward you must speak the words EXACTLY how you write them? well, this rule is COMPLETELY IGNORED in brazilian portuguese.( Why? same as in american english and british english. Both Brazil and U.S were colonies where people migrated to, most people were not highly educated, and there were also imigrants from others countries that couldn't speak the language at all and when the colonies gained independence the language evolved seperatly and drifted appart).
      There are also two major rules for sound in european portuguese: only one syllable can be emphasised per word, so for each word there's a single power vowel. And to emphasise/stress some words these signs are used ´or ` for open sounds, and ^ or ~ for nasal sounds for when you direct sound through your nose, again these can only be used once per word and must be on a sillable that is either 1st, 2nd or 3rd counting from the end of the word.
      When speaking in brazilian portuguese, more than often, several syllables of the same word are enfasised, a clear violation of this rule... hence why they have to speak with a wider mouth, and why people hear more vowels. So european portuguese aren't "eating vowels" they are only stressing one vowel per word, while brazilians are emphasising them all.
      _
      FINALLY, the way european portuguese emphasise words goes along with the way italians intonate theirs. Hence, it's easier to spot the similarities between the spoken languages.
      _
      And I now realise that it might have been simpler if I just explained to you how portuguese is the lovechild of the romantic french and seductive spanish, if I just said:
      Once upon a time, a french knight helped a spanish king kick out the arabs of the iberian peninsule and in return the spanish king gave him a piece of land to rule and one of his daughters to marry.
      French + Spanish + ( (1/x) x Arabic)* = Portuguese *(a little bit of Arabic)
      Therefore, Spanish is close to Italian, French is closer and Portuguese is closest.

      do you think so? Well I am studying translation and since the first day our teacher talked in portuguese (she is a native speaker from Brasil) and the whole classroom (who hasn't knowledge of portuguese at all, me neither) understood her. The teacher talked in portuguese in our first year, but it wasn't a big deal. The hard thing was writing since we had a lot of words in common so we made a few typos(pregunta/pergunta, libro/livro, respuesta/resposta), also verbal tenses and contractions (ao-no-pelo-etc)

El español, el portugués, francés, italiano y rumano son los idiomas descendientes del latín; es por eso que tienen palabras muy similares entre sí. Además de que España y Portugal fueron un mismo imperio por un tiempo y el Imperio Portugués se basó en el español para hacer el idioma que tienen actualmente.

    My best friend during grad school was Brasilian. I speak fluent Spanish. We would have long conversations until 4 am, speaking in both languages. It's totally easy if you keep it within a certain etymological root range...and if you want to communicate. Sometimes, though, people don't want to meet you half way. So, it's all about how you structure the interaction. BTW: I can 85% just about any Italian or Portuguese TH-cam Cooking Demonstration, because I also grew up with French as my first language. So, totally easy to understand. Can't really talk back to them in their language, except some polite phrases!
