Replace Toilet Tank Bolts and Tank Gasket

  • A toilet that is leaking from the bottom of the tank probably needs a new toilet to bowl gasket or toilet tank bolts and seals. If there is a leak between the toilet tank and bowl when the toilet is flushed, that usually indicates that the seal between the toilet tank and bowl has failed.
    This video will shows how to replace the tank to bowl seal and how to replace the toilet tank bolts. It's a good idea to install both a new tank to bowl gasket and new tank bolts/gaskets at the same time.

    I'm a widow and am going to be making this repair by myself this weekend. Yours was the first video I found, and can I just say, I was so excited to hear a woman's voice! Thank you for the clear and detailed step-by-step instructions. Thank you, also, for mentioning what to do when the bolts are completely rusted. (That's the reason I'm having to replace them. The screws are practically dissolved inside the tank in the master bath.) I feel much more confident moving forward, thanks to your tutorial. Definitely a thumbs up!

    I've replaced tank bolts several times, I've never seen bolting to the tank before bolting to the bowl. This was a great added step. I was able to find a bolt replacement kit that was all brass. Most replacement kits are brass bolts with steel washers and nuts. Because to of the metals not being the same, it causes electrolysis or galvanic corrosion. Hopefully, the corrosion of the past will not happen. One step that I added was using a level. As I tightened each side, I made sure the tank was level. Thanks for a great video.

    Thank you for your clear and concise video. It was just what I needed, and I have fixed my toilet. I want to repeat your comment that I found to be very helpful.
    "I would try removing the rubber washers on the underside of the tank. The purpose of the rubber washer/gasket is to prevent water from leaking from the tank & through the bolt hole. You only need one seal.... on the inside of the tank. On the underside of the tank, put a flat washer, then a nut. The flat washer will keep even pressure under the rubber washer. You only have to make the nut on the underside tight enough to compress the washer so that it makes a good seal."
    That was just the extra advice I needed. Thank you so much!

    Just a few comments as each method discussed in the below replies will work properly. 1) It's ok to put a metal washer on the outside (without a rubber washer - the Toto method). 2) It's ok to put a rubber washer under the metal washer on the outside (with a rubber washer). 3) It's ok to simply not even put any washer at all until the outside process - it's just that it would not be sealed or testable until the tank goes on. Method 3 is good if you simply don't have enough washers to do the job properly, but it's the least reliable of the 3 methods. All 3 of these methods will work. In the Toto directions, it says to use metal against porcelain. My only comment is that's fine but not if you can bench press 400 lbs as you might more easily crack the porcelain - so in that case, the rubber washer gives at least a little bit of "coupling" forgiveness as it doesn't quite exert as much force due to squashing. If you use a metal washer - the net force goes up less gradually and a strong mechanic can easily overturn the nut. The water-seal should be about the same with/without the rubber washer since the inner rubber washer is the one that's really needed to seal the water (which is not under much pressure and doesn't need a great seal). Thus I view the outer rubber washer as unnecessary but perhaps ok to put in due to it's forgiveness and perhaps as a second line of water seal (although the metal washer does this too, and probably almost as good as rubber). Either a rubber washer or a steel washer will corrode to some extent. Also, you should put little white caps over the ends of the bolts - perhaps you would need to saw the ends of the bolts off if they stick out too much. These caps help to reduce oxidation from the air (which is the biggest source of corrosion, not the water itself, even if it DOES have fluorine in it). This is due to sulfuric acid in the air - ie. acid rain type of humidity.

      Go for it Alexis, I'm sure you can do it. Look at the bolts/nuts on the under side of the tank, if they look rusted or corroded, spray them with penetrating oil and let it soak for at least an hour, over night would be better. PB Blaster makes penetrating oil (it has a very strong odor, but it works great). It's not very expensive and the big box hardware stores sell it. If you can't get the loose see the link below the video on some tips on how to remove them if they are stuck.

    First video I've found on this that doesn't show you the incorrect way of doing it - by putting a metal tank washer inside the tank. God knows how many leaking tank bolts have been caused by this.

  • @ITLHI1
    @ITLHI1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got an American Standard round toilet and installed it recently. The instructions did not say to use a nut right under the tank. So it was okay on the right side but it kept leaking under the right side bolt.
    So i followed this video, maybe another one too and also the instructions on a PlumbCraft close couple bolt set which also says to use a nut right under the tank. So the leak on the right side has stopped.
    Before that, someone at the hardware store said to use a metal washer on top of the rubber washer inside the tank. But that did not stop the leak.

    Is the tank supposed to be in direct contact with the bowl when finished? Or supported by the tank gasket with gaps all around?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You shouldn't be able to rock the tank back and forth like it's on a spring. Direct contact points can vary by the model/make. For example, a Toto Drake has 3 bowl/tank contact points. A Gerber (can't think of the name) has 2 contact points. If you are not sure, slowly alternate tightening the bolts, checking to see if the tank rocks or contact is being made between the tank and bowl. When you make contact or tank stops rocking, stop tightening the bolts. Too tight and you can crack the tank/bowl. Check/monitor for leaks.

      You are welcome, Marcy. The hardest part may be getting the old bolts out. If the bolts look rusted see my comment below to Alexis for some tips. Also if they won't come loose and your are able to get a hack saw blade between the bolt and the tank, you can put some tape on one end of the blade(holder for your hand) and then saw through the bolt. This is why brass bolts are best, the brass is soft, it won't rust and is fairly easy to cut. You may be able to cut the nut with a dremel too. Mechanics use nut splitter tools. One of those may work too.

      I’ll try taking rubber washers off underneath but I had them that way before and the same bolt was leaking that way before.
      I am wondering if inside the tank, between the tank and rubber washer, if I should try putting on a little plumbers putty or flex seal or ??? Running out of things to try...
      I am going to check the gasket again too, just to make sure that isnt the issue.
      Thx

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A few thoughts: Are you sure the leak is from the bolt hole, not the tank to bowl gasket? Is there any debris/rough surface under the washer? Did you look closely at the tank under good light, maybe there is a small crack in the porcelain? I'd think the washers aren't the problem if only one side leaks.

  • @marcmarc4776
    @marcmarc4776 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You completely forgot the rubber gasket for the underside of the tank. You 100% need BOTH,...just look at every other video on TH-cam. The kits also come with 4 (2 for each side) black rubber gaskets. Not only do the rubber gaskets seal the holes, but they also provide a cushion between that metal washer/nut, and the bottom of the tank....so you don't crack it.
    This tank will fail soon without that second rubber gasket.

      Hi Marc, I politely have to beg to differ with you. My toilets are not leaking are installed as shown in the video. One of the toilets was a 1952 Kohler, to my knowledge it never had the extra rubber washer you indicate will prevent leaks and if not installed will cause the tank to crack. 67 years have passed the tank has not cracked and it does not leak. I will put a link to the installation instructions for a Toto toilet (See page 5). It does not show a metal washer where you indicated one must be placed to prevent leaks/cracks in tank. I'll take my advice from the engineers at a company that manufactures millions of toilets and the history of my installations as a proven good installation method.

      @@Know-How-Now It doesn't matter what bowl you have, the process is the same and the kits to replace these bolts are the same. You may not have leaks now, but you will. Here is one from ACE for example: www.acehardware.com/departments/plumbing/toilets/toilet-repair-parts/4222451?x429=true&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuZDtBRDvARIsAPXFx3AU0sBfNB83u3z1qRkk-UPfyQ4JT7V9gGI6Kym5n0gU0baEy4pFvbUaAo3qEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
      "It does not show a metal washer where you indicated one must be placed to prevent leaks/cracks in tank."
      I didn't indicate this, YOU did in your video. You are literally fucking up by putting a metal washer directly on the tank, INSTEAD of on the rubber gasket that should be placed before it.

    • @gregkosinski2303
      @gregkosinski2303 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcmarc4776 while a rubber washer on both sides could help protect the porcelain on the underside, it will not improve the seal. Inside of the tank you have the gasket being pressed firmly against the tank and the solid head of the bolt. If for some reason that seal was compromised, the rubber washer/metal washer/nut/bolt interface will not hold water.

    Always use only SOLID brass bolts and STAINLESS STEEL hardware.
    I just had to drill out a pair of shitty plated bolts someone somehow tricked me into buying.
    The shitty bolts began rusting immediately and after a few years were fuxted enough to begin leaking. We don't even have chlorinated water, it's chloraminated, which is easier on metals.
    This 'small' difference means not having to rip up and replace an ENTIRE FLOOR destroyed by a slow and undetectable creeping tank leak!
    This can easily cause you to break your china as well.
    A couple bucks "saved" can cost you THOUSANDS in water damage, etc.
    Death-death-death and nothing but death to all who sell crap hardware to the ignorant!

      I'm late to the party here, but the OP of this comment is the real newb. Introducing a washer under the bolt (without a second gasket) provides a leak path between the bottom face of the bolt and the top of the washer and around the bolt shank. Trying to get the bolt and washer to seal without a gasket by reefing on the nut will only cause a crack in the tank, the bowl or both. Think before calling names, because you will be made a fool more times than not.
