If only we could have such lovely melodic melody around us today instead of just raucous noise.

    • @victorburk2932

That's all it is today; just noise! Back in the time when this song was recorded songs told a story. Today's youth listening to this noise today is an audiologist dream to make a lot of money later on. I have hearing problems but at least mine was due to military action, not listening to this thumping stuff they have today.

My late wife and I did a lot of cruising and I played this as the recessional music at her funeral. Absolutely beautiful. The tears flowed. The Seekers have always been favourites of ours. We loved them. X

This song is about a failed relationship... idk what you're listening to but I can name at least 10 new songs about failed relationships; music is music regardless of the era, this stuff is beautiful but it's ridiculous to think that the quality you love about this music, that you're unable to find in today's music, is more than just nostalgia

The water is wide, I cannot get o'er
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall cross my true love and I
I lean'd my back against an oak
Thinking it was a mighty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
So did my love prove false to me
I put my hand in some soft bush
Thinking the sweetest flow'are to find
I prick'd my finger to the bone
And left the sweetest flow'are behind
O love is handsome and love is kind
Gay as a jewel when it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the morning dew

According to her autobiography, she did not regret leaving the Seekers. She was unhappy with them and had never intended to be in a folk group. She was only with them for what she thought was a summer gig. Reading between the lines it is possible she had mixed feelings, however, she repeatedly and steadfastly refused to reunite with them until the early 1990s.

I’ve “noticed” this on several seekers recordings, where the lead is taken by one or more of the male singers, and Judith can barely be heard. This was a great pity, in my opinion. I have no wish whatsoever to denigrate the other members of the group, but it looks to me as if even they, didn’t realise how good Judith actually was. After all they played the instruments, and Judith should have been lead on every song. This is particularly true on the song in this video, but the most glaring example is their recording of Tom Paxton’s “Last thing on my mind”.

    • @Puppydoug
      @Puppydoug 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I get your point, but many bands like to "shake things up" a bit, hence not always the same lead singer. Beatles, for example. ALL of the fab four took lead vocal at one time or another - even Ringo (Act Naturally, Yellow Submarine, Octopuses Garden etc). It adds variety to the mix. @@davidpryle3935

In Judith's own words upon returning to Australia in 1965, these three men were "..fatherly and brotherly..." and on their own best behaviour obviously.
Weeks on end aboard ship and everyone in their 20's and single.
    Wow!
    She looks so ravishing!

I've heard this done by many other singers & groups; seemed nice, but never fully satisfying.
This rendition does that for me.
It's a song that, as an amateur musician, I've considered working up, but have been unable to imagine how to do it in a non-saccharine way.
    Until hearing this.
This also demonstrates that Judith's isn't the only exceptional voice in this group. This chain has no weak link.
NB: Incidentally, this song has an interesting provenance, going back a few centuries; Wikipedia has some good info about it.
The modern version seems to date back to 1906, by Cecil Sharp.

I can see an episode in the television series Bonanza for this group.
Little Joe and Adam see The Seekers performing in Virginia City and they both become smitten with Judith.
They compete for her favor while her three protective brothers try to prevent any romantic chemisty from happening.

The sixties were tumultuous, an era of such great music, iconic personalities, and life-changing events, good and bad. Seeing and listening to groups like the Seekers and especially Judith Durham who has one of the most distinctive voices and the greatest smile of any generation makes me miss those days. So ironic, I never would have thought when looking back to that time in the '60s that it would conjure such peace and tranquility. Didn't realize it at the time but now I consider myself so fortunate to have been a teen growing up in that era.
