This interview took place in 2007, nearly ten years before Rickles passed away in 2017. The documentary was called "Mr. Warmth" (2008) and it was fabulous. If you haven't seen it or his Man of the Hour roasts, I highly recommend both.
Denzel was scheduled to leave right after his interview, but when he found out Don Rickles was the next guest, Denzel blew off his schedule so he could stay. What was said about Frank Sinatra was true. Sinatra had strong connections with the top mafia bosses. Don Rickles was one of the very few who could get away with teasing Sinatra because he was so funny.
Back in the day, celebs lined up to be roasted by Don. He was not PC, he did not pull any punches no matter who you were, or how much power you had in Hollywood, and that's why they loved him. Black, white, whatever religion, they all got roasted by him.
You saw the video that was cut short. I wish you saw the video with the full thing, which exists on TH-cam. I'll give you some background. Denzel's son had an interest in Don Rickles at that time. He loved the joke "Hey! Is that your wife??.... (low voice) Jesus." Denzel happened to be on the same date that Letterman was on, and Denzel called his son and Don Rickles gave him shit on the phone. "What name, is it Leroy??" "Your father told me about the will. You'll get the money and Mom will get the cleats!" So Denzel told all this on Letterman, and they echoed that joke through all of Denzel's segment. When Rickles finally walked out, he had the angry look and kept hugging Denzel like 4 times for building up the show for his appearance. Then he did the Jesus joke. As for Dr. Denzel, Denzel was saying that the doctor who delivered his father was named Dr. Denzel, and that's how he became Denzel, and Letterman asked him to repeat that. Now in this clip, a few stuff was cut out. He absolutely roasted the shit out of Denzel lol, and Denzel loved it. When they had to take commercials, you could see how much respect he had for Rickles. Rickles was very appreciative of him sitting out with him. Rickles thanked him at the end and Denzel said "My pleasure."
When I was a kid, my brother in law, who was much older than me, called and told me to call him back. On his answering machine was the voice of Don Rickles who basically insulted whomever was calling.
It's so funny.. Sammy Davis Jr. and Don Rickles were the 2 Jewish men in Frank Sinatra's circle.. Sammy more so than Don because Sammy was part of the Rat Pack. the inner circle. . But it's funny that the Chairman of the Board accepted everyone.. unless you crossed him.. lol
One of my favorite Rickles clips ever. Denzel wanted to stay to be insulted! Classic.
You can tell , Denzel is having the time of his life 😂

Frank Sinatra really was well connected with the Mafia. And Don Rickles hung out with all those guys!

Rickles was 82 years old here. Sharp as a tack.
You need to check out another Don Rickles on David Letterman from 2009. Something from the "sky" drops while Don is talking about the mob in the past.
React to Henny Youngman Friars Club Roast of Don Rickles (1970-9-30).

Since you like Rickles you should react to Phyllis Diller, Don's female counterpart
I love comedy when it was okay to make jokes on everyone.. It's not allowed anymore
There’s a version with a funny, endearing opening that this doesn’t show.
You love comedy. For a great defense for honest comedy, check out "Duckman's Rant on Comedy".
