      How could the hotal not continue to pay him if it was only $12 a week. I doubt they got rid of their food service all together so they still need someone to polish the glasses. I am guessing they made this job part of someone else duty.

      Brian Hensley actually it could very well be true, and not illegal depending on the program. may uncle will for ever be at the educational level of a 1 or 2nd grader depending on the subject. he can not read though can recognize letter. to receive the assistance he need to live as close to a normal life as he does he can never make more then a specific amount. if he makes more then that amount it will lose part if not all of the assistance he receives. inheriting anything also counts towards that income level as well.

      OkamsRazer sorry for me not understanding what you meant. your points are certainly viable. and just youtubing similar fases shows that people with mentale disabilities can do quite some impressive jobs (such as own a restaurant). however who is to say that he did not like polishing? just because a normal person _should_ not like it? or feel like it is beneath him? maybe it was his dream job. Mental disabilities vary greatly, while some can actually perform on a rather high level others cant or do not want to. and, as is the case for ppl without disabilities, should not be forced into any job they do not want or can perform. as such I tend to trust the decision of parents as they know their children best and I do not blame them without having very detailed information about each individual case.

      No they can't pay him $2 a day that would be labor violation. And the job wasn't worth more. Plus he is on SSI anyone with Downs would be on SSI which is means tested he would lose all or part that SSI. They would have to pay 7.25 or more depending on state to do a job they don't need and was created for him. Or, to retrain him they would have to pay waged employee who may have family.
      A hotel is business and must look at its bottom line and manager isn't the owner so can't offer someone $58 per day for a job they don't need.

    • @donniedarko1184
      @donniedarko1184 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm only saying the hotel could have some pull if They were happy with his work' to say we want to keep this young man working here, no further training needed. No idea what SSI is nor does it matter. Just based off the video the manager/owner/whoever said they were pleased with his work and this is unfortunate, without giving up a fight and saying fuck you to the people who said nahhhh we don't want him there anymore too much paperwork. Of course they are a business and at first I was appalled he only made 24$ a pay check. But that is also a gold mine for the Hotel, save someone polishing dishes, takes a lot of time. It just Doesn't make sense.

      They don't pay anyone. It is the agency who pays him, and if there is an

      They would have to be capable of shame but rich people are monsters who get their jollies hurting people and abusing and exploiting people. It is a proven fact. Every study ever done proved that any time someone got an unfair advantage over others they started acting like jerks. The Stanford Experiment is the most famous but there are thousands of others. We all know that $12 a week is not breaking the budget of that multibillion dollar business, the owner probably just did it to give himself a big ole woody.

      Sorry, my mistake, it was the agency responsible for placing him there. So then the question becomes, "Why are they needed?". Surely he knows the job by now and can do it unsupervised (It can't be more than 2 or 3 hours a week). The hotel ponies up the $12 per week, his parents bring him to and from work. What am I missing? I hear about others with Down Syndrome who work much longer hours as bag-boys, car washers, etc... Is there a state/local law that requires this intermediary agency for disabled people? I don't get it.

    I think this is disgraceful. I hope he has found employment elsewhere. Maybe the hotel at which he worked decided to hire him on their staff at a much higher wage. This shows a major lack of funding to those types of programs. I am a person with a disability who lives in Toronto. I can say with absolute certainty this would not happen here. We have numerous agencies where funding is available to (re)train persons with disabilities.

    My dad use to employ a man with Down syndrome. Awesome guy and everybody at our store loved him and now misses him. After awhile at our store my dad had to let him go because the work environment was proving to dangerous for him (knives, band saws, blades etc.) and he had hurt himself many times. His main job was to clean, take out trash, stock shelves. We miss the guy but he has a new cleaning dishes as a restaurant which, last time we talked to him, he really enjoys.

    So many people missing the point of this whole situation:
    1. The hotel employs him on behalf of the agency that supports him. They don't really need anybody to "polish silverware". It's 2022, we have machines that do that.
    2. The point of the job is not to provide him with money, but to provide him with some dignity and routine and a sense of pride. Again, the hotel doesn't actually need someone to polish silverware. They are stepping up to support someone in the community, in conjunction with an agency. The pay is simply symbolic.
    3. The hotel did not fire him. The hotel is being forced to let him go because the agency that supports him can no longer afford to support him. The story is a bit unclear on this, but the assumption is that he must be working with a social worker or someone of the like on-site who ensures that he is having a good day. The issue is not the affordability of the $24, but the affordability of dedicating a social worker to him.
    4. This story is now 10 years old and unsure of the present status, however, he did receive his agency support and job back shortly after the story broke.

    Reminds me of factory job I once had. There was a company that employed those with special needs and the factory outsourced to them to prepare hardware bags for us. Screws, bolts, lever nuts, instruction sheets, and all those kinds of things the customer needed to install the product. They saved us a lot of time and I personally never had an issue with missing parts when I'd check them over before packing. They did their job well regardless of any disabilities they may have had.
    Later found out from a supervisor that the company in question labeled the job volunteer work and that allowed them to pretty much pay whatever they felt like. I never got a number, but I can only assume it was some pathetic amount like in this video. Sickened me to no end when I found out. The factory I worked in paid the outsourced company a significant amount of money and I'd wager most of that money went right into the bank account of one person. Its slavery. You can try and feel good about yourself and lie that you're doing them a service, but its all bullshit.

After my internship I got a job at Cognitive Surplus (a warehouse kind of job), but that didn’t work either because my body couldn’t move fast enough. Then my job coach got me a job selling tickets at a movie theater (Bridgeport Regal Cinemas 18 & IMAX) where I work in the box office selling tickets to people and I love it! I had this job beginning in November 2018 and have been working hard at this job ever since. To that man who has Down syndrome I feel for u man! I know it’s like to lose a job because you have a disability! I’ve been there and I never want to go that route again!

      @BUDDA325 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon it's your comment about making fun of his disability. He lost his job because someone was hating on him he's not black or Hispanic but he suffures from more then discrimination he suffers from people who hate on him for just being human and wanting a chance to live. He didn't seek attention on himself to get his story out. You want respect from people you have to sometimes give it even if you have hate in your heart for that person

    • @SimonZellox
      @SimonZellox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pattington Bear, sure it's an ugly story but what are you going to do about it? Disabled people can't do the same kind of work as "normal" people so they struggle to be competitive with other workers, that's how life works. It's similar to natural selection if you think about it but today's world allows people like this to find a job. I mean... He had one which is better than nothing.

    • @BUDDA325
      @BUDDA325 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon there is no such thing as a normal person. There is nothing to determine what a normal person is or looks like. Normal selection is when they offer you a second chance when your a felon. Normal selection or being normal doesn't apply here because he is normal he is a human and he is honerable and not some scub bucket who would do anything for a job. Remember normal selection would be the only way why someone like you would get offered a job. Your job must suck.

    That is the BS that does happen to them. It tick me off because he has a handicap they only give him $12 a week. He should try at the Supermarkets and help bag groceries. We have a sweet young man at our Wal-Mart that is VERY good doing different jobs. I call this discrimination. I'd report them, I don't care who they are. If they were paid that much, I bet they would scream bloody murder. I wonder who's pocketing the extra funds?
