After mincing a few stock diffs up front, i went with a locker and solid spacer and never had an issue for 10 plus years and hard wheeling and touring that was in one of my old 79series with the factory 1fz, 35s and a nice big turbo n haltec giving a comfy 700nm at the treads and 7k of rpm. Giving it the berrys in all different terrains from the huge sand dunes of Lancelin WA limi bashing to the vic high country and up blue mountain tracks, nothing wrong with the cruiser diffs but i can see the size difference and use for them in comp trucks@mattkinsela
Totally addicted to the technical stuff mate that's what got us so excited I reckon. Personally been looking forward to this episode since your teaser pic on the Modified 80 series group on Facebook :)
Awesome vid Matt, I didn't realise the side gear conversion was a simple as using them from the opposing locker, how good!!! A heads up, which you probably already know...the patrol front filler plug height is much higher than Toyota f&r and patrol rear. Keen to see more progress on this build, keep it up !
Hey nick, yeah the locker makes it an easy swap hey! Yeah I have since been informed, I only measured the difference between Toyota hi pinion and Toyota rear when I fitted it. Typical Nissan, couldn’t work out how to make it scavenge oil efficiently so just raise the fill plug, she be right 😂
Content is so good very interesting. Question is there a benefit to keeping the 80/105 diffs and not just running patrol diffs? Other than needing custom drive shafts?
In some situations 100% it’s the way to go, I didn’t want them to be too wide under the 60 body, and I already had a bunch of upgraded Toyota axles and stuff I can use. Plus the offset rear diff is nice, with the ability to upgrade the rear axles without taking out another mortgage on my houses haha
@@seanmyles4484 you will be able to get it in our website at Kinsela’s kustoms soon. You can do the rear, I’ve not done it though, it’s probably easier
Hi Matt nice vid. Would like an explanation as to why you didn’t just put a whole GU front axle housing in it. I would have thought it would have been easier. Thnaks
Hey frank, you’re right starting from scratch like this it would have been, maybe not if it’s already a car with rcvs etc set up. I did it to keep my wheels in the guards on the 60 body, the Gu diff being wider was no good.
Awseome conversion, definitely a good upgrade. Some great content too, have watched the build up from the start. May have to be mindful of your ratio selection though, as the Landcruisers are 4.3:1 (43:10) and the Patrols are 4.375:1 (35:8) from memory so may end up with some transfer case bind up. Did just read futhur down your replay, definitely a part time kit needed, will drive so much better especially with a bit of power. Also what's your plans for rear axles?
For the U.S. based viewers. I feel like I am missing some basic info on this kind of swap. I know larger ring and pinions are desirable, but I thought Landcruiser axles Achilles heel was the shaft necking down. Wouldn’t that still be an issue with this swap? Can we get some Patrol/Toyota 101 schooling here? I have a set of 80 series with ARB’s front/rear, 4.10’s, and 33’s under my Discovery 1. Would this conversion be a worthwhile setup? 35’s would probably be the largest tire I would ever run. Maybe 37’s for a particular trip if needed.
Once you run chromo axles the weak point is the centre, especially if you ever load it up in reverse when the gears try to “unwind from each other, rather than locking in tighter going forwards if that makes sense.
@@mattkinsela You would know better than me, but don't many guys run front centres in the rear for high pinion clearance reasons? Are they constantly breaking diff gears running them in reverse?
Yeah I only measured the difference between the Toyota front and rear casings, but one of the guys at work who unfortunately drives a patrol pointed it out the next day. I’ll have to raise it up when I pull the housing out to brace etc. well spotted
Since you’re doing all the custom fab Matt why not just use GU front and rear diffs over modifying the 105 stuff? I just did a conversion on my 75 with GU diffs and wasn’t that hard, I like the fact patrol diffs have a lot of different ratios. Keep up the technical stuff, anyone can make a video of someone welding 2 pieces of metal together
What ratios are you using front and rear, cause from what I understand 4.875 is the only ratio which lines up (39c/8p) Landcrusier 4.3 is a 43c/10p whereas Patrol 4.3 is 35c/8p which is actually a 4.375. Curious to see if the difference will actually cause any bind issues
I jdid some calcs, every hundred metres on 35s the rear shaft will do 3 less revolutions (doing around 156) when wheeling I think it would be turning etc too in that 100m and potential slipping, especially when actually climbing etc. when awd we’ll see, may burn out the centre diff and I have to part time it 🤷♂️
@@mattkinsela I thought about the same thing in my patrol front conversion. Ended up going with patrol 4.11 front and hdj79 4.1 rear into my 105. Yeah I mentioned it in the first video, the 105 front end only difference is it’s 5 stud not 6, and has 10mm studs for the hubs or drive flanges instead of 8 which is also nice. The rear has the main benefit from having larger rear axle along with the 10mm studs on the hub face. I think the rotor might be slightly different diameter too?

Is there any reason why you didn't just use a 60 series front diff and weld the mounts on? Then you have matching diffs centres front and rear. With all common parts and it seems like it would be a lot less work.
Yeah there’s heaps of reasons, mainly it’s too narrow, the cvs are small and weak, weaker housing, the steering setup sucks with high steer hitting the chassis and stuff, worse brakes, and losing the hi pinion diff centre. Also the centres wouldn’t match anyway as the rear is larger axle splined.
Maybe in some situations for sure man, not in this case, the diff is too wide for a 60 without mega flares and then the tyres scrubbing into everything when turning. But also it’s a good mod if you already have a built cruiser and chromo axles etc all steering arms etc done. Rather than have to buy it all again. Plus apart from the centre, patrol front ends aren’t really that great anyway
I measured the rear filler compared to the front filler I removed, it was about 5mm different, which was negligible I thought. But then I was speaking to timmyhasheart and he mentioned that his patrol front is much higher, and I had a look at one at work and he was right. The Nissan diffs must not scavenge the oil as well up into the pinion bearings. So I’ll change the filler to match the Nissan housing.
