    What I love about Ke Huy Quan’s performance is how each version of Waymond feels unique and distinct. Michelle spoke in an interview about how hard he worked building each character with his acting coach, and I think it shows. He’s the heart of this movie for sure.

      I agree, he is the MVP. But I think Becky deserves credit for being the character who REALLY has no clue what is going on, doesn't even understand two of the three languages being spoken, but is still ALWAYS supporting Joy.

    The story about your mother was very touching and i kind of understand the feeling.... For years me and my father had a horrible relationship, it was hard to even say we were related. But now he seems to understand the pain he had caused me, he apologised many times now and tries to get close to me, we even talk about video games and movies together, like my childhood was being brought back to life. I think that some parents need time to learn and understand their place in the universe, just how Evelyn did. I wish you a lot of happiness and stay well

    One of the best modern masterpiece i've seen in recent years and deserved every rewards and recognition it got. Besides an interesting theme done well (multiverse), over-the-top hilarious action sequences, great editing and heartwarming drama, it's philosophically thought-provoking too.
    It tells the opposing approach to existentialism that questions our life's purpose and cripples most of us. Pessimistic nihilism vs. optimistic absurdism. The yinyang of everything bagel (black outside, white inside) vs google eyes (white outside, black inside). Empty void inside vs pure core inside. "Nothing matters so might as well destroy everything" vs "Nothing matters so might as well enjoy life". Waymond taught Evelyn and us the latter.

    • @daan260
      @daan260 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Nothing matters so might as well enjoy life”
      You think that was the message? I thought it was “love gives meaning to life, it proves that things do matter”.
      If You’re right, this movie is wrong in more ways than I thought. I mean, just might as well enjoy it, is not gonna cut it if you’re having serious issues in your life. You need meaning in times that you’re not able to enjoy your life.

    • @soulscyther666
      @soulscyther666 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@daan260 it's related. I just worded it like that because i still want to use the phrase "Nothing Matters" which is the core of the movie. Because even how you view things (may it be positive/negative), It doesn't change the fact that nothing matters, it's just how you deal with it. In other words:
      *"We all find meaning in this purposeless existence"*

    • @daan260
      @daan260 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soulscyther666 I don't agree at all that "nothing matters" is a fact, so I dislike a movie who claims that as being a fact.
      Also I don't think you can just tell yourself to view things in a positive way when you're simply suffering.
      "We all find meaning in this purposeless existence"
      that's a contradiction by definition, unless you believe that our thoughts don't exist.
      I think modern people spiritually deprived and see reality in a materialistic way. I think this is fundamentally flawed and this movie is a perfect representation of the issue's that those people are struggling with. I would even say that this movie is specifically made for those people.

    • @soulscyther666
      @soulscyther666 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@daan260 that's why the movie shows the two opposing views, and hence my og comment. You can have the other as belief, and that doesn't void the other.
      Anyway, what i meant on my quote was we CAN cling to any self-consolation we can think of to justify that we exist for a "greater" reason, and not just a tiny speck to an uncaring universe that wouldn't count it as its loss if you exist or not. God didn't create us. It's the other around, we created them to delude ourselves that imaginary deities have "plans" for us. We find our own meaning.
      To quote another show, a simple dialogue that's related to this two opposing views, and speaks volume philosophically.
      Person1: Life's a bitch, then you die. Right?
      Person2: Sometimes. Sometimes life's a bitch and then you keep living.
      *"It is what you make of life."*

    • @daan260
      @daan260 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soulscyther666 In your first comment you made a nice comparison to the philosophy of yin yang, but I don't see how it relates to absurdism apart from the fact that it's in between nihilism and existentialism. Not everything in the middle of 2 opposites is automatically yin yang however. I still think absurdism is wrong, because it's not a permanent solution.
      I agree with you that we find our own meaning. But we find it because it's in our DNA. We do not create our own meaning, we discover it. I think we receive our meaning from god, because I believe the universe is a living entity with inherent meaning. Every living organism is striving for progress through the proces of evolution. from the big bang till today, everything is a fluctuating progression. To participate in this progress is just to accept reality for what it is. To look at reality as a meaningless mass of atoms is wrong on so many levels.

    In one of the scenes where Joy/Jobu is talking to Evelyn in a forest, she breaks off a branch and holds it up, which then turns into a rapid series of frames of different items, most only single frame edits, and many people missed that in the very last frame she is actually holding an Academy Award, which turned out to be very prescient since, tonight, they're up for 11 Oscars - the most of any film this year - and I read somewhere that the movie has already won more total combined awards than any other film ever.
    I’ll always be grateful that I got to see this in an IMAX pre-release screening in a packed theater. The huge screen and sound system, combined with the collective audience experience during all the incredible surprising moments in the this film was one of my all-time favorite movie-going experiences. While I don't really like art being put into categories as "best", I'm really pulling for this film because it was such a small film and so incredibly original. And, come on, everything in Michelle Yeoh's career all funneled perfectly into this role and she deserves to be the first Asian actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. And James Hong has 451 credits in his IMDB profile, going back to 1954. Legend.

      My only complaint is that Ke Huy Quan is not nominated for Best Actor... Waymond is integral to this story, and almost more important of a character than Evelyn. It's a shame that he is considered as a "supporting" role in this film... he deserves to win the highest level of award for his acting. With that said, I am not familiar with how Hollywood makes these decision, as I am not in the business. Regardless, EEAAO is one of the finest pieces of art that I have ever witnessed, and I'm so happy to live in a timeline where it exists. Much love and light to anyone who is reading this! :-)

      @@rickardroach9075 fair point about Brendan Fraser... my heart was so overwhelmed with the true surprise and joy that all of the winners expressed, but Brendan's win was well earned. As far as your other point, I understand that the "Big 5" is best pic/actor/actress/director/screenplay, whichbhas happened 3x. However, I found it interesting that no film has ever received best pic as well all 4 acting awards (best actor/actress and supporting actor/actress). EEAAO did become only the 3rd film to win 4/5 though... the last time that happened was "Network" in 1976, and "Streetcar Named Desire" in 1951.

    2. Existential Crisis - if the entire universe will eventually die then what is the point of doing anything.
    3. Depression - it's like a black hole that's hard to get out of and the daughter thinks death is the only escape.

    I will continue to shout from the rooftops how amazing this movie is to anyone who will listen. I don't care if sounds like hyperbole, but this movie literally cured my depression. I've always been a bit of a nihlist who believed that nothing we did matters. I was Jobu without the cool powers. I believed that, eventually, the human race will end, the sun will explode, the universe will collapse in on itself, etc... so why bother? What is the point of life and living, if nothing we do matters.
    This movie taught me a different way to view that same nihilism: if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
    WE can profoundly effect the world we live in just by being kind. Whether you believe in "religion" or "god" or "a higher power" or just that we are a giant coincidence created by billions of things going EXACTLY right to create a living being that can perceive the universe which created it. None of that matters. What matters is what we do with the time that we're here. That's all. Nothing else. It doesn't matter if our efforts are appreciated, or even noticed, because we control how we perceive the universe in which we live!
    This movie is a modern miracle that spoke to my soul, and no matter how many times I watch it, I'm exhausted from crying at the end. This movie is..... EVERYTHING. ba dum tiss
    And to top everything off, last night, they win seven of the eleven Oscars they were nominated for! I don't think I've ever actually cheered aloud at an award announcement, but I sure as heck did for this movie! Louder and louder each time they won and literally stood up and danced for the Best Picture!
    Thank you for sharing your reaction to this movie with the world. 🥰

    It's nihilism vs absurdism and how the meaninglessness of life frees you to stop worrying about what you think you ought to do or who you ought to be and instead do what whatever you want to do and be whatever you want to be. At the same time, it seems to touch on the adhd and unfocused mind, in that, when you don't know what to do with yourself, it can destroy you, but if you learn its real nature, you can harness it to become amazing to yourself and to the world around you when driven by love and compassion.

    Also I love Family Man so thanks for the reminder. I haven't watched it recently since I just have different streaming services instead of regular TV.
    You were me throughout this movie in that I laughed, cried, and absolutely thought I accidentally took drugs or drank too much in the middle of the movie. I've never been particularly close to my mom but I could relate to the struggle of everything seemingly being the wrong thing to say on both sides of the mother/daughter relationship as I'm now a mom myself.

    Bless you for getting this wonderful movie. I hope you and your mother find your way back to each other as I hope this message brings the love of my life back to me. The dvd will be waiting for her in her post box when she returns from working in Thailand. It's made for her on so many levels and me as well. I am Waymond and Ke Huy Quan. The scene when he says "In another universe....." pierced my heart with tears of love, pain, joy, thankfulness and weeping and repeatedly ever since. Bless you for confirming everything I felt and agree with everything you said. It's profoundly magnificent in so many ..... every way! Yes, words are not available, as the many emotions that exist but we have no vocabulary no words to describe or identify them. Only serious high art music does that and EEAAO comes very close. The Daniels did something very important for all humankind, butt plugs and dildoes included! Bless you for your words and tears and bless your beautiful loving sacrificing mother. In fact, if I'm still single or you have a very big heart, we have core beauty and truth potential with each other. Yes, I do fancy you very much for your beautiful soul, mind and spirit.

    The "I'm sorry, it's a girl" scene... At the time she was born there was a 1 child policy in China. So, "naturally" boys were preferred. It was a policy that lead to infanticide of girls in some cases. Because girls couldn't carry on the family name. His name ended with her birth, he probably resents her existence. And the doctor would be fully aware of the "tragedy" that he just suffered. Prompting the apology

    Let's hear it for movies about inter-generational trauma! Yay...? Seriously, though. I am not you. You are not me. Yet we can both be moved by the same story. You feel your relationship with your mother. For me it was my dad. He died a couple of years ago, and we never really reconnected So I do recommend trying to find common ground, common love with your mom. I also relate so much with Waymond. His belief in kindness, and his willingness to love, to be open. It's truly courageous. That is not an easy road to walk.

    Great Reaction!
    Regarding the whole 'I'm sorry it's a girl' comment: While I've never heard any reactor actually understand this reference, it's a pretty powerful reference that only some of us 40 year old+ people might understand.
    Back in 1980, due to overcrowding, China instituted a 1 Child Per Family Policy. Because of this, and due to families desiring to carry on their family names through their male child (because of tradition), if a family birthed a female child as their first-born, they would kill them and try again (very often they would drown them in a nearby river).
    It is an extremely dark time in Chinas' history. Very sad but unfortunately true. Don't Google this for your own mental health sake.

    If Michelle Yeow, Jamie Lee Curtis (or Stephanie Hsu) and Ke Huy Quan don't win academy awards tonight for their respective categories, I would be upset!! Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu are both nominated for best supporting actress so to me it is a toss up but I think Jamie Lee is the emotional favorite. Gong Gong, played by James Hong is 93 years old and is an acting legend and has been in over 700 movies and TV show. I have seen him in interviews and at 93 his mind is much sharper than mine!

    • @jazzx251
      @jazzx251 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm going with Stephanie
      Jamie only had to play an IRS agent, and a slightly worse version of that (not hard to do, even including the fight scenes ...).
      Stephanie had to be an emo teenager rebelling against her mother's traditional chinese family, and then an impossible-to-defeat super-villain.
      I went into this movie completely blind - it turns out to be a multiple-universe, mind-bending, kung-fu master, expression of how to keep a family together!
      It's getting Best Picture tonight.
      No question.
