Austin is great for seniors who don't want to just retire on golf course somewhere. It's great to be around younger people but you won't find many of us seasoned citizens on 6th street. We most likey prefer other live music and all the other performing arts. Austin is one of the few cities if it's size to have a symphony, opera and ballet companies. The 55 and older group is one of the fastest growing demographics in the city. Austin is safe for city of its size. Austin tourism has come roaring back, hence the high hotel prices downtown. Austin will always have the feel of a younger college town with two large public universities serving the area, but it's much more than a college town these days.

Born and raised and I'm 40. It's very much family oriented as well. You just gotta know the city well enough to know the places in order to enjoy family time. Otherwise if your not familiar with our city, you will assume it's made for young people given the fact 6th street and surrounding streets is basically bar hopping.

Downtown and UT are just a small part of the city. Nice neighborhoods, still friendly people and family oriented. A bit of something for everybody, what the city has continued since the late 90s to be so popular. Now it's really pricier to live here too with a median price home in the city now topping 650K this summer according to the Austin board of realtors.

2 things you didn't mention. In Barton Springs, women are legally allowed to go topless there, I've done it. It's not uncommon either. Also, it is legally allowed to walk topless for women within Austin City Limits. Just for any women who want to go topless and be free. Also, there's a clothing optional area near Lake Travis called Hippie Hollow. You can go completely nude or stay clothed! This is coming from a proud born and raised Austinite. Also, just beware now of the Homeless people, they can get very mean.

With kids first time to U.S. go to Florida - Disney/Universal etc. It will cost a fortune but there are direct flights to Orlando from Europe. They will love it and remember it fondly. If Texas you could do Austin/San Antonio/Houston but Austin is a college town with not a lot of kids stuff to do. San Antonio has family friendly River Walk, Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas (one of the best Six Flags parks). Houston has Space Center Houston and Galveston Beach. Just remember it's hot as hell in Texas in the summer combined with humidity. I'm a Houston boy and love exploring Texas but it's a hard sell for kids. Young adults yes. Especially Austin with all the bars catering to the college crowd.

What an age-ist thing to say. The last time I went to Austin, we went to that very street he is saying is for young people. I went specifically for the old buildings, but there were shops and food places. Also some great music comes out of that area. Kat Edmonson is a great example of that. Why does he think old people don't like music? I don't drink but that's a health choice, not an age choice. Lots of older people do drink. Maybe what this guy is really saying is, "Hey we don't want you old people crowding our scene." Shut up. I'm going to watch the rest of the video, because he started out right in an area I really like. Maybe he has some more places an old person might dare to go, but I'm also going to give it a thumbs down, because he's so rude to old people. He might be old himself one day.
