Problem is that you have people going “it’s muh god given right to own the animals” and the wild pet community loves to cite things like how captive animals live longer than wild ones… even though that only applies to zoos and sanctuaries because it’s hard and/or often unethical to do the same research with including privately owned ones. I swear, one of the only channels I’ve seen support the captive primates safety act is one called Kiara’s corner. That started as a channel so the owner could document her vervet, Kiara, and let her family and friends see the monkey grow up. But then, when she got a bunch of negative comments, she checked to see if they had any truth and she did her research into academic papers. Then she realised what it really meant to look after a monkey. Especially one taken from her mother at a young age. Unfortunately, Kiara passed away. She has three vervets now and gives them one of the most balanced diets and a massive enclosure but admits that it can never satisfy their need for space. She’s a big advocate for the act, especially since her state is incredibly lax on laws but has to keep her head down because, as part of the pet monkey community, helping rescue Mojo and Maya put her on thin ice.
I know someone that had a spider (?) monkey. It was before I knew them but it still bothers me. This person lived in a small apartment. My dog has more freedom than most exotic pets. It's like putting a dog in a crate while you're gone for 8+ hours a day. It's so cruel.
They couldn't tell the difference between a python and a boa even after being shown the snake and being told verbally several times which snake was which, and with the species of the snake clearly labeled on the front of the enclosure. FWC are a shameful joke; unfortunately most jobs dealing with animals are filled with people who need jobs and like the idea of working with animals, not people who actually know anything about the animals they work with.
I don't understand how their whole job is to protect and restore Florida Wildlife, yet there's a million hoops to jump through to remove invasive species while they're also willing to be heavy handed with euthanizing pets and let a population of monkeys exist like that. I know people get up in their feels about animals when it comes to the pet trade as well as hunting, but considering the demand for reptiles it would be a win win to allow harvesting invasives for out of state relocation over just killing them like they do. Unfortunately people see idiots like this guy online and it smears the whole demographic of responsible keepers and their idiocy results in legislation that punishes everyone else
@@Chudchanning Absolutely agree; we could capture and rehome so many invasives to hobbyists that will genuinely love and care for them instead of needlessly euthanizing them, also it's the responsible breeders and hobbyists that get hit the hardest, for example the man who's decades old pet snakehead fish that was forcibly taken from him and euthanized AFTER the ban on snakeheads in the pet trade in his state even though he'd owned the fish for years before the fish was even banned. They should have grandfathered him in as an exception to the ban since he owned the animal well before the ban but instead his beloved pet was killed. Likewise they proposed a ban on a specific species of crawfish in the Florida pet trade and several responsible hobbyists and breeders pointed out how similar a lot of crawfish species and colour morphs look to the untrained eye and how this would ultimately end up with the FWC confiscating and euthanizing countless crawfish that are not on any proposed ban list just out of ignorance. This applies to a ton of animals in the aquarium and reptile hobbies, it's just really upsetting that these laws are made by people who have no knowledge of the animals they work with and stubbornly ignore any advice or suggestions from responsible breeders and hobbyists that genuinely want better laws and regulations regarding the animal trade.
@@Chudchanning its because the people who run florida do not care about the welfare of animals. look at what they are doing to the everglades and other natural areas of the state. The ecology of Florida is basically going to be gone in 50 years because of climate change so I guess they think its okay to accelerate it.
When invasive non-native species, like the pythons who have extirpated 95% of the native wildlife within their established range, rehoming to another location is out of the question because no state wants to risk these animals establishing themselves there too. People can't be trusted to not release unwanted animals into the wild when all it takes is a few pregnant females to have another FL situation.
“I didn’t plan to have a monkey” As if having a monkey was the most common thing in the whole world! You can plan to not have a dog or a cat, and something unexpected happens, so now, you have your best friend! But a monkey? That’s absolutely planned, it’s shameful to use that argument so many times. Are their viewers that blind to not even question his integrity?
@@sourgreendolly7685 Well, my point in the comment was that sometimes, you find a stray dog or cat, so you decide to take care of them, so you just give them their best live, do you understand that in some situations people can’t plain ahead because the new pet of the family wasn’t in did not planned? But in others situations, of course! I agree with you, being organized is always the best option.

I'm a zoologist and former vet student, and I am VERY firm in my belief that no primate should be a pet. Period. They are unbelievably difficult to care for, and no matter how much the owner thinks they're providing the primate with what they need, I can guarantee you they're not. Because they can't. It is simply not possible for a human to provide the social, physical, mental, and nutritional requirements these animals need.
@@ArcadeOrca right, it could be, so let’s take those children and give them to some animal species and let them raise them, that’s got to be better, right?
Your right. Only this isn’t a vervet it looks like a leaf monkey… These animal are too wild to be pets. Dogs and cats and a few other species have had what? Thousands of years to acclimate to living around us. Primates have not. Also there is the whole disease vector thing going on as well. seriously, WHAT could he have said! he’s competent enough to acquire a monkey and exploit it for profit, volunteer and work with animals, pass a written test to get his permit to keep the monkey, how the hell did he get out of standing trial
THIS IS AMAZING!!! Thank you so much for covering this guy Cid, I learned about him owning a monkey after he was actually in my home town a while back and went semi viral trying to claim that our police force had profiled him for a separate reason than the monkey. Despite the traffic stop they were not even aware he had Thabo because at the time I assume he was being kept in the dog crate in the back of the van. It makes me wonder how often outside of filming content Thabo is actually allowed out, as even in content he is kept in the cage and I have yet to see Thabo eat just about any meal large or healthy enough for an animal like him, I hope outside of the eye of the camera he is feed an appropriate diet but I doubt it. It's disheartening to see him just use Thabo for money and scamming people, especially the videos where he says he's passed. So disgusting to see him keep him in that van so much and the way he encourages Thabos destructive behavior especially when it's more than likely caused by how little time he is allowed out. And disturbing turtle's nests and stealing them and sea life out of the wild and SELLING them? Encouraging people to take invasive monkeys from the wild? How is he not in prison! If he is too incompetent to stand trial then he should not be allowed a "pet" like a monkey. All these people who encourage and follow him are so disgusting, will just follow along with anything they deem "cute" enough, even if its abuse. And just because Thabo is invasive it's so awful to think that he is any less allowed to receive proper care. I very rarely wish harm on people but I do firmly believe that if Ray had stumbled on a few hundred Man'O Wars in Florida the world would be a better place. While NC has very few laws preventing the ownership of exotic animals(see several exotic animal sanctuary's after people realize they cannot handle big cats and places like the Cheetah Sanctuary in Burningtown) a lot of towns have their own specific laws that do not allow primates within city limits. I hope one day that NC takes stricter laws in hand to protect exotic animals from people like Ray. I hope that the poor woman that was bitten had an easy and quick recovery and no lingering mental harm from it.

As an avid pet owner I don’t think anyone should be able to own primates of any kind … even tho their my least favorite animals they still deserve better then your small ass home
I am so upset and saddened by this situation. There is no one to protect the primates and other exotic animals. There are a few good and conscientious people and a few good sanctuaries that understand the needs to these animals. Ray is a danger to Thabo and so many other people. He can think up these schemes and many are elaborate. However, a judge finds he is incapable of standing trial. But at the same time he is capable of owning a primate. So many primate owners feed them junk food. I am so sickened that he feeds him fried chicken and other junk food. He stole Thabo from his mother in Dania Beach, FL. They let him get away with that. More than likely he killed the mother. When will this madness stop. We have seen Tiger King and then Chimp Crazy. Both were examples of how badly these innocent animals are treated. The young woman that was bitten had a terrible injury. The next time Thabo gets away from Ray may be even more devastating.
it makes me so sad seeing animals being exploited on social media for likes and views and everyone’s laughing but the rest of us are just like….this is animal abuse what is funny about this? Thank you for sharing the resource cause I’m gonna take action.
I'm disgusted with how normalized the exotic pet trade is on tiktok. I remember seeing a video of a serval and I assumed It was at a sanctuary, so I made some kind of comment reminding other people that it's not a pet. OP mocked me for this because turns out this was their exotic pet. they villainized me and tried to justify it by saying that it was a hybrid. Knowing the kind of abuse that happens with Savannah breeding only made me feel sicker. I could tell the kind of egotistical person they were from that comment alone, so I did not engage any further but the entire situation makes me feel so sick and I'm so sorry for that animal.
Yup. Same thing happened to me with that girl on tiktok who has a fennec fox she forces to eat vegan. Tiktok is where rational thought goes to die, and objectively terrible people are rewarded for being terrible.
Me saying I didn’t plan on owning three cats is normal. I quite literally just obtained them (one under a trailer, one behind a dumpster, and another at a construction site.) but him saying he didn’t mean to own a monkey is just weird. The cat distribution system doesn’t moonlight as a monkey distribution system.
The legal system protecting animals in Florida seems broken. How there be so much evidence of poaching/animal endangerment from this guy, yet he doesn't face legal consequences? If he's not competent to stand trial, how is he competent enough to continue owning and even selling animals?
Everything in Florida is broken. You can go to a flea market and see a bunch of animals being sold there unethically, most likely brought from mills or smuggled from their natural habitats. There’s absolutely no oversight to this kind of thing.
Yeah, sanctuaries don't give away animals. The whole reason for an animal to go there is to be able to live with their own kind, socialize, etc. and they are not adoption agencies. If he's talking about working there and getting an animal in return, some breeders will do this, but they only sell to you at a discount for your work.
At a place I studied we were a holding centre for a breeding program for an endangered species of monkey. We weren’t allowed to take photos to post online because of the issue of pet trade and how cute photos of the monkeys could possibly make people want one as a pet
Most likely another home for him wouldn't be wise!! He has been through SO much abuse he needs MUCH more help than a good owner could be able to EVER deal with!! A sanctuary would be great because he would have freedom which he badly needs!
The lab would have employees do night feedings for an orphaned baby monkey. I've seen a lab give away dogs to employees but a monkey is insane. It being a Vervet makes it even more unbelievable. There aren't a ton around. There was such a big shortage, some labs were using wild caught ones (not as many being bred as other species). Them being more uncommon makes them valuable. There's no way it's a lab monkey.
Exactly. The United States doesn’t have a naturally occurring NHP species. All the ones that’re roaming about are invasive species eg Florida’s monkey troops. And primate breeders in the US depending on the state have to have permits and so many tests so that’ll be hard to do as well.
If Ray makes so much money from TikTok, why doesn't he buy a house and build an outdoor enclosure for Thabo? It's clear Thabo is very stressed in an indoor environment and is unable to be himself safely.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised either, the transit lifestyle, reckless behavior and the amount of money that just seems to be going nowhere all feel like red flags for substance abuse. As a former resident of Ft. Lauderdale (just north of Dania Beach), I can confirm - these monkeys are now living wild. There is one park on Ft Lauderdale beach where there are large troops of them. They will come up to windows and take food from people. You could definitely catch one.
im an anthropology student, and I love primatology. This is just heartbreaking to watch, and makes my skin crawl. Thabo is beautiful and deserves a better life, full of love and not a camera shoved in his face. He needs room, socialization with others of his species, etc.
I had no idea about what this guy has been doing. I am a restorative aquarist based in south Florida and (legally) raise many of the species he is casually poaching. He needs to be put in prison
I've requested this before but I'm going to ask if you could look into Taylor Nicole Dean again. After losing most of her pets, she has now gained most of them back. She does not seem to be caring for them and the rare time she does offer animal care advice she is usually wrong. I am so tired of people giving this person the benefit of the doubt and I really hope you'll consider this. I understand animal death is inevitable, but owning 50+ animals you don't know how to care for will always end in a quicker death. Thank you.
It's not even legal to have a dog off a leash in public! How is this legal?? Even if you disregard the ethical issues of owning a monkey/ape, they're still incredibly harmful and dangerous.
Suncoast primate sanctuary is one of the ones I have visited because I have an environmental science career in mind for my bachelor's degree, with an associate's degree in animal biology. A lot of these zoos and "sanctuaries" (big stretch to call them that) in Florida need to be completely shut down. Most are private zoos and they are not kept up to standard according to my program. I think I've reported more than half the places I've visited. I would never work for them and I hope they are held accountable.
as a volunteer at my local zoo, it pisses me off that this guy says to volunteer JUST in order to get an exotic animal as a pet :/ no! you volunteer cause you WANT TO HELP, not because you want an exotic pet
Thank you for your continued work & educating the public about private ownership of these primates. I cant imagine how many fall into the wrong hands with the appeal of social media and money to be made. Things were bad enough without this extra problem. I would have thought when the lady was bitten that would have finally been enough for the authorities to confiscate the monkey.
This kind of animal exploitation is what makes me think any ownership of animals HAS to come with licenses and constant follow up for wild or undomesticated animals. Like how was any of this okay??
Hey! I know you usually make videos about people who own monkeys, but have you seen that guy with a caracal? It's super overweight and is often interacting with his normal domesticated cats. If there's enough info, I'd love to see a video on him.

I just started the video, but I am so mad about Curtis the Vervet Monkey. Those clowns paraded him around like a little homie and then one day he was just gone and replaced. And then that next monkey was gone. The people will never fess up about what happened either.
These videos are raw, honest, barebones truth and always make a good point. I just don't get it when it's about animals everyone gose insane, and yea animals can't speak for themselves, however the same people who comment here for social justice warrior points are almost always the same people who use crapple iphones made in basically slave labor factories. Are the people in the communist China who made their iphones basically animals as are forced to work long hours with almost no time for anything else and live in horrible unsanitary conditions on factory dorms? And do these same people who comment here about sea turtles also use plastic straws and if no complain about paper straws? Remember, one death is a tradgey, and a thousand is a statistic.

As someone who have many type of monkeys (I have marmosets, tamarins, squirrel monkeys, De Brazza’s monkeys, and a spider monkey), this guy right here doesn’t deserve to have Thabo at all. Poor thing needs someone who is financial ready. Not someone who has to move from place to place and can’t even afford a good nutritious food for Thabo. I’m telling you all. You can have monkeys all you want man as long as you have a plenty of time, space, and wealth. If you don’t have none of that, get a dog or cat.
I'm glad you did the proper research on him. I personally was questioned him personally and thought he was being odd. The people calling him out was just as incompetent as him, so I couldn't give a heads or tails with this situation. He needs to just give him up to people who can take care of them.
Umm if he is legally incompetent he’s either a tremendous actor or dude needs medical treatment. I’m a little upset with that judge, this seemed like a great time for APS to swoop in & get the original marine animals to safety/dinner (sorry lol, I’m rural) and get that young man into treatment. Judges do not like to rule people incompetent, esp young people. People with developmental or emotional disorders can be real problems if their symptoms are unmanaged and lead to criminal or disruptive behavior. Everybody needs help & if someone needs treatment to re-establish competence (likely mental health or addiction), then they probably dismissed charges to avoid paying for his treatment, but they shoved an impaired individual back out into society with no help. He’s not a good dude, but I’m guessing that he does not have complete control of his mind right now. I would guess there’s a lot of mania & delusions of grandeur, it’s hard to stay reality-bound without resources & support. I constantly have to remind myself that if I was as genius as I believe, I’d be a lot more rich and successful. I do believe I’ll be rediscovered after my death & will be like super famous but also I know it’s a mental illness and I must not take action or spend money based on these beliefs. If I’m as incredible as I think, great, someone will eventually tell the world, but there’s a 99.9% that it’s all in my head lol
I mean I also have mania and stuff and it is possible he is suffering from an untreated condition but I think someone at least has to make him stop trying to sell and use animals for profit, because he has clearly no respect for them. I don't think that his abuse of animals is mental illness, although their negligence is probably made a lot worse. It's obvious to me that he thinks he is caring for the monkey (even if he acquired it in a horrible way) but the way he treats sea life is extremely upsetting and I think is more a consequence of having a callous relationship with life than mental illness
I was just going to say just as it is not ever going to happen that a breeder or lab is going to give away a baby monkey to a person they are not going to give it to a sanctuary. They are going to sell it or if something is wrong with it they will euthanize it. The only reason this guy was volunteering was because in Florida to get a permit to own a monkey you must have a certain number of hours of experience caring for monkeys.
FWC can't even tell a python from a boa. The way he got his permit does not surprise me.
“I didn’t plan to have a monkey”
As if having a monkey was the most common thing in the whole world! You can plan to not have a dog or a cat, and something unexpected happens, so now, you have your best friend! But a monkey? That’s absolutely planned, it’s shameful to use that argument so many times. Are their viewers that blind to not even question his integrity?
He probably got the monkey by impulse..which isnt planned but is still much worse. You shouldnt impulse buy any animal much less exotic animals.
I seriously question the intellect of such viewers
You're asking people on tiktok to be intelligent. Not gonna happen.
Okay but people need to stop not planning to have dogs and cats too. People need to stop getting pets they aren't prepared for.

While I agree with you the same could be said about children lol. There's so many people that shouldn't even have kids.
Henceforth making them lousy pets for both the animal AND the humans.
@@ArcadeOrcaI know huh! It’s funny if I want to practice Law, medicine, cut hair, embalm a body, to even drive a car but one does NOT need one to have kids… Makes no sense.

@@JustAFox2183 I know. How is that possible? Like, I almost wish we could look up the court transcripts to see what he said to the judge that got him declared incompetent.
seriously, WHAT could he have said! he’s competent enough to acquire a monkey and exploit it for profit, volunteer and work with animals, pass a written test to get his permit to keep the monkey, how the hell did he get out of standing trial
@@mistakemcgee2807Judge doesn’t like sea turtles?
That hand drawn diagram as an office document tho i cannot.
I worked in Toxicology (lab) research for over 2 decades, & I can guarantee you that NO LABORATORY ever would adopt out/give away a baby (or any) monkey for any reason. Bro was lying HARD.
Sid, GREAT video, as always- love your content, & the amount of detail you provide!!💚 (I am sure it takes a LOT of time, & I appreciate it!!)
Taking sea turtle eggs is the most wild thing ever and then shipping coral in a regular cardboard box and claiming he’s breeding all these species of saltwater fish. Great video I knew this dude was a weirdo lol
That is diabolical to mess with endangered sea turtles and sea life 🤬
This
And the Florida judge completely dismissed the charges. Unbelievable.
@@WobblesandBeanI know!!! My jaw dropped and I was soooo fucking pissed when I saw that part of the video. He should have been charged. This guy is such a piece of shit he needs to be stopped.

Yeah it was shocking tbh I can't believe people actually do that
@@WobblesandBean I’m ngl, as much of a terrible person Ray is. This guy is a genius. He knows how to get away with things and he planned getting the monkey in a very methodical way.

I had to search them again but yes, sure enough 'Monkey Asmr' is the same Man & Tahvo!
The lack of care on top of profiting off of his animal abuse is absolutely absurd :c
I think a video about Suncoast the sanctuary would be informative. Its unfortunate that apparently so many people manage to get the title of sanctuary or rescue but seem to actually be shops or zoo's.
Ya I think Cid would do an amazing deep dive on Suncoast !! Something is so off about all of this 😢.
There’s another one called myrtle beach. Just… the diets they give the chimps in videos is a little much eg pizza, pasta.
As an avid pet owner I don’t think anyone should be able to own primates of any kind … even tho their my least favorite animals they still deserve better then your small ass home
1000% same
travis is the no 1 reason why primates should not be pets
I work in a prison and what surprised me when I visited a animal sanctuary place was that monkeys acted more civilised when feeding them the humans.
They deserve so much more respect than they're given.
Not competent enough to stand trial, but competent enough to take care of a monkey??
And apparently freaking Sea Turtles!!
it makes me so sad seeing animals being exploited on social media for likes and views and everyone’s laughing but the rest of us are just like….this is animal abuse what is funny about this? Thank you for sharing the resource cause I’m gonna take action.
Right 😞💙
I'm disgusted with how normalized the exotic pet trade is on tiktok.
I think the operative word is "Florida." Explains a lot, unfortunately.
Everything in Florida is broken. You can go to a flea market and see a bunch of animals being sold there unethically, most likely brought from mills or smuggled from their natural habitats. There’s absolutely no oversight to this kind of thing.
Tabo runs crazy cause he's cooped up in a cage constantly. That's a sign of confinement
Not necessarily think monkeys are like that all the time
This guy needs to be behind bars, this is blatant animal abuse he is profitting off of.
What do you suggest for the breeders?
At a place I studied we were a holding centre for a breeding program for an endangered species of monkey.
We weren’t allowed to take photos to post online because of the issue of pet trade and how cute photos of the monkeys could possibly make people want one as a pet
Thabo needs to be taken away from Ray & go to an animal sanctuary or to someone who will actually nurture, love, & care for Thabo!
@@rowanheart8122 Most Likely drugs. He looks like he gets high.

This stuff makes me so mad - im so grateful that Australia has laws against the exotic pet trade.
America does too, you need a permit. I’m sure he doesn’t but it isn’t enforced unless someone gets hurt I believe

Thank you.

I remember when he first posted online, it was purely oriented around an intersection of 2 niche youtube genres: ASMR and Monkeys .... it was just the dude's hand and the monkey; of course as soon as he became the 'star', all this dodgy stuff came out.
I have been WAITING for someone to talk about this guy
I just started the video, but I am so mad about Curtis the Vervet Monkey. Those clowns paraded him around like a little homie and then one day he was just gone and replaced. And then that next monkey was gone. The people will never fess up about what happened either.

Man the music over the clips of Ray SLAPS
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT so they didn’t take Thabo away from Ray after he bit the lady?!?!
Dont stop making these videos. You’re a voice these animals need!!!!
I love your videos and how thorough and professional you approach hard topics to educate us. Thank you for spreading awareness!
I can't believe he messes with turtle nests. That makes me beyond furious
It’s insane to me how things like this can even happen in modern times. How could somebody so completely incompetent be allowed to do such a thing??
I was just going to say just as it is not ever going to happen that a breeder or lab is going to give away a baby monkey to a person they are not going to give it to a sanctuary. They are going to sell it or if something is wrong with it they will euthanize it.
The only reason this guy was volunteering was because in Florida to get a permit to own a monkey you must have a certain number of hours of experience caring for monkeys. Also, a legit sanctuary is also NEVER going to give away or sell a baby monkey to a private party like this. I have worked with primates, both wild and captive for over 25 years.
If this guy's lips are flapping then he is lying.
Just hearing about this man makes me shake my head
Florida fish and wildlife has notoriously been kinda lackadaisical on most of there stuff
Poor Tabo..he should live his best life with his family now, but was kidnapped(what happened to his mother???) And is now exploited for money
