  • Despite being extremely tired of filming, while waiting for the flights home we decided to add one Vietnam video to our SE Asia journey. This is on heroism, and the women who died for Vietnam.

    The music for this video was graciously provided by Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com. It is Creative Commons, and he is no doubt unaware we're using it, but hey. I still think he's great for letting it happen.

    You forgot Phùng Thị Chính, one of the noblewoman who fought alongside the Trưng sisters. Legend has it that she was pregnant and gave birth on the battlefield. She carried her newborn in one arm and a sword in the other to fight. When she learned that the Trưng sisters had committed suicide, she killed herself and her child.

Everything from the filming to the philosophy of the series is really well made, and seemingly with heart. I've been to most of the countries mentioned in your series so far, from what I can tell you've truly captured the essence of every location. "...ultimately, it's not the history that matters... it's the legend..." My grandparents were humble working class people from Norway -- that is my history. And based on this, I can imagine how I might be related to famous Vikings -- that is my legend.

      To be honest, whatever floats your boat. Assuming that you are American, I don’t think you even have to waist time concerning whether your grandparents were working class people or Viking warlords at all.
      The story in this video is totally different. The people in the story needs a motivation to fuel their struggle for independence. Those legends did just that.

    The International Fixed Calendar is great. I actually came up with it on my own when I decided I wanted to come up with a calendar system that maximized the number of times the 13th of a month landed on a Friday, just to screw with superstitious people.
    Turns out if you have the IFC start on a Sunday and have New Years and Leap Day not counted during the normal Sunday-Saturday system, every month from January to Smarch has a Friday the 13th.

    If Vietnam wasn't as sparsely populated as Tibet or Xinjiang, it would surely be part of China. Really, its surprising to me it's not. The Han have conquered various others, of which are now core parts of China and will likely never be independent- Many probably don't even care to try. Xinjiang, Tibet, Manchuria, and Inner Mongolia all have vastly different cultures from China in the same way that Vietnam does- Hell, Vietnam is much more similar to china than some that I listed. Most of its history was spent as part of China, never having the same kind of independence places like Korea did. It's really interesting out of all of the places, Vietnam was the most successful in remaining independent

      I cannot speak for other countries but as for Vietnam, though they were forced to be a part of China, they tried to refrained from being assimilated. Throughout Vietnam's history, there were various rebels and wars against the intruders from the North. They even invented their own writing system to preserve the Vietnamese culture and to confuse the Chinese. So no, it was not surprising that Vietnam is an independent country now.

      @sarahprunierlaw9147 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given that BC means before Christ and Christ is more then Jesus's name it is a religious affirmation, I much prefer BC. And yes - the dividing line between BCE and CE is the birth of Jesus (at least the best guess of his birth at the time the calendar was set by Dionysius Exiguus) but that is different then every time you give a date saying "before the messiah was born".

      A truly secular and non-colonialist calendar would have to get rid of the Roman calendar altogether. The Xiongnu might actually have been the predecessors of the eastern European Huns. from my understanding, Vietnam today has one of the highest rates of woman CEO's, small business owners, etc in the world.
    And respecting those older "Aunties" regarless of income level is good advice to any foreign visitors. A land and people born from dragons and fairies.

      There are lot more if you're still interested in reading! Nguyễn Thị Định, Nguyễn Thị Bình, Đinh Thị Vân, Ngô Thị Tuyển; not to mention the countless nameless women who participated in the revolution and the Vietnamese Heroic Mothers. Going further down in history (think millennia), in ancient Vietnamese tribes women had a better social status and more rights compared to some other neighboring cultures, giving a clue as to why.

    The part that you said vn was dominated for 2000 years and was independent for around 2 hundred years before the French came is wrong. Vn was dominated for just shy of 1000 years and has had 1000 years of self governance and lasted through 10 Chinese invasions by the time the French came. And even in those 1000 former years there were constant rebellion.

    Heya! This topic look very interesting but I've noticed that this video isn't properly closed captioned yet. (Hence it being auto-generated captioned)
    Can you please have someone take a look at this video (and maybe other video?) and correct the closed captioning? o: I enjoyed your series and I would like to view more where it's as accessible!

      As a general rule, in Vietnamese, a single "word" (as separated by a space) is always one syllable. They kinda fudge this sometimes (e.g. with "Việt", which is pronounced closer to one syllable than the two very distinct syllables most westerners say it as, but still seems to usually have two syllables even in Vietnamese), but for the most part it's true. Hence "Việt Nam" as two words.

    Well brother, BC and BCE are completely different things. BC is Before Christ while BCE means Before Common Era. As to why they are not the same besides that is because they differ about a few years as those experts found themselves to be wrong in their calculation. To use it interchangeably is to say 2019 is the same as 2022.

      Yeah, but the roman calendar is a colonialist symbol that means very little to people who aren't roman. I mean, the traditional chinese or indian calendars have a lot more native users, we should be using those as the international standard if we absolutely must use a pre-existing one.

    From what I know, the origins of the Nam Yue kingdom is a general from the earlier Qin empire whom was sent by the Qin emperor to conquer those lands but was left stranded when the Qin dynasty was overthrown by the Han dynasty. Essentially it’s still a Chinese kingdom.

    • @havu-xq4ip
      @havu-xq4ip 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah like how china was divided in to 3 then 5 then 12 kingdoms. Then get invaded by the Mongols. USA and Canada are former British colonies. Some parts of Poland used to be Prussian. Britain used to be a Roman province, and so is the majority of European countries.
      What exactly are you trying to imply through this little fact? Our kings might have Chinese ancestors but the people haven't considered themselves Chinese for 2000 years so don't go around calling Vietnam Chinese kingdoms. It is like calling American "British colonies". :-)

    I love your videos about these stories that no one thinks very much of or even about. But I always feel these vids are sometimes dramatic not overly so but shouldn't the story speak for itself. In this video the start wasn't dramatic rather it was light.
