The lecturer assumes that the learners are already familiar on the proper location of Compression and Tension when the beam subjects from positive or negative bending. Under the discussion, the beam suffers positive bending due to the given load set up. So Compression state is found above the neutral axis and Tension is found below the neutral axis.

    Anu Asmax for double reinforcement?

    • @nioroskyengineeringonline8968

Hi i already have a discussion on how to assess the asmax using rhomax for douvly reibforced concrete beam. Please refer to the video lecture fpund in my playlist on RCD. Dont forget that rhomax = Asmax/(bd)

First form is for general section
Second form is derived for rectangular beam section
Third form is derived to be used for faster design, i.e, obtaining As
PS: The beam can be designed as Singly reinforced beam with phiMn= 159kN-m.

hi. regarding your PS, do not forget it was stated to use the condition under Ductile :) your value of 159kNm i think comes from the tension controlled condition or strength based. it was specific to use under ductile condition based on the situation of the problem which is the code that nscp 2001 and older most preferred but still active due to some applicability clauses just discussed in the principle of the 4 forms of ductility requirement. I also included the tension controlled and strength based procedure for ductility as menntioned in NSCP 2015. in practice we are dealing with maximum tensile strain of 0.005 or more to consider the axial force of influence since the 0.004 value was assumed when the axial force is unsignificant. See my discussion under this link. Cheers :) th-cam.com/video/O7YyU4dViH8/w-d-xo.html

the 2nd form you are claiming based on my discussion is not only for rectangular beam since it can cater section with notches or irregular shapes by replacing the effective area of concrete for compression ab to an equation that fits the situation by using geometrical calculations as shown in some problems int he singly reinf concrete irregular beam sections and still it can be called as 2nd form. the use of tension reinforcement index was introduced as the 2nd form in my discussion to primarily assess the existence of how will the rating of reinforcement will be used. Just to share the info, before, nscp 2001 and older, uses a certain table to trace the required steel area with the use the tension reinf index and it is accessible at during those times as also introduced by ACI. before it is heavily used that is why old practicioners recognized the use of this. As the code evolves and updates are alreay in the process, the table became obsolete due to the update of the code that disqualifies the value as found in that table. so that is how important the tension reinforcement index :) cheers. A piece of historical backgroudn will help us understand why there are 3 forms or may be more exists in designing RCD but the thing is the basic or the first form will solve it all since all other forms comes from C=T situation which is understand as the first form of my discussion. Cheers and my two cents :)

@@nioroskyengineeringonline8968 The PS in my previous comment was calculated under ductile condition also. I'm just wondering why you used 0.5rho balance as the steel ratio for the checking the capacity of a singly reinforced beam. I assumed you used that value to force the beam to behave like a doubly reinforced beam. Regards

@@Hezekiah7777zjckfka the answer is simple. for non ductile we use 0.75rhobal. while on ductile we use 0.5rhobal based on past code that was nscp 2001 and below but still considered as a special case in nscp 2010 and onwards. cheers. that was discuss in my video lec. kindly watch completely and transcribe to the information :) cheers/ here is the link : th-cam.com/video/O7YyU4dViH8/w-d-xo.html
