I have this exact laser and this video filled in so much missing information from the setup guide and owner’s manual. Thank you for putting this out. Once I’ve got the machine squared away, it’ll be on to library building.
This video is great for seeking an engraver machine..I've been using my Monport CO2 laser for a few months now, and I'm really impressed with its reliability.
Use ID calipers to measure the nozzle to the surface. The caliper tongs bend outward allowing accurate measurements with the dial calipers. Especially if you're looking for tenths of a millimeter.
It’s a good thing to check! I personally haven’t encountered an issue with it. I suppose if your machine squeals you could check that as a solution! Good call out.
Great video … you lost me on the last adjustment of the actual nozzle when you went from the crescent shape to the pin point. How did you do that and adjust the laser so it quit hitting the bezel side?
Congrats on the purchase! Should be fine to move the gantry around without the chiller. Its main function is to cool the water that gets pumped around the laser tube. Just don’t fire the laser at all and you should be good.
I have this exact laser in my cart right now. I need to finish my remodel so I have somewhere to put it, but I don't think I've seen a more thorough setup how-to video related to CO2 lasers. I have to imagine a lot of what you're doing is what Thunder/Boss/Aeon are doing, but it doesn't look like $5k+ in labor. I think I'll wait for your review video to get your impressions after you've had some time with it. Will definitely use your coupon code if I do end up ordering from Monport. Thanks!
i just received my 80W auto focus and want to put it in the garage yet I am in Houston where summer temps can range into the 90's. I ordered the chiller to use and a couple of fan to move air. Do you believe I need to dehumidify and cool the air?
Hey! The owners manual recommends a certain humidity and environmental temperature to operate in. I honestly don’t have a lot of experience with the impact on the laser. It would be a safe bet to follow those guidelines in my opinion.
How is your parameter library building going? I’m struggling a little bit with mine. Cutting has been the hardest part. I think i need to upgrade my air assist.
Cutting is a challenge for me as well. I just got in a 4” lens but need to find the extension tube to support it before I test further. I’m barely able to get through 1/2” mdf at 80% 5mm/s with the 2” the machine comes with. From what I understand, upgraded air assist will help get me across the finish line but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of people cutting thick material like that. At least not with clear advice.
@@WoodNerds Exact same issue I’ve been having. Even 1/8 MDF with a maple veneer has been a chore. A 130 should slice that like butter. I did try the 20mm tube extension which seemed to help a little but not worth the disassembly and reassembly. A little bit of a learning curve for me. I’m coming from a fiber laser. Let me know how the 4” works out for you. I think I am going to have to go the same route because I’ve got serious plans for cutting with this machine and bed size.
@@WoodNerds I’ve been looking at American Photonics. They sell a 3 pack kit with tubes and lenses for about $170. I think this plus the upgraded air assist would do the trick. I will let you know how it goes for me if I get mine done before you do.
Last week i got the Monport 60w. I cannot get the 1st mirror to line up. Machine is fully level and square. Have spent more than 20 hrs trying. Does anyone have any ideas??
By first mirror are you talking about the first mirror that encounters the laser from the laser tube? If that one is not centered going in, you can adjust using the screws on the bottom of the stem or where the mirror meets the machine cabinet. I don’t believe there are micro adjustments options for that, just need to move and tighten down each time.
So far, I like it. It seems almost all of the laser machines in this price and power range are coming from China with similar quality and features. In fact, most of them use the exact same parts. The experience I’ve had with Monport and the machine I have has been positive. I think most of the negative reviews/feedback I see around laser machines in general, has to do with users not fully understanding their machines. These are industrial grade machines and require setup and tuning like any other industrial grade machine. After that, seems to be no problems from what I’ve seen.
I followed all of these steps on mine and can't get that nice clean mark at 15% power straight out of the tube in front of the first mirror. Working with support to figure out what is going on, but I have to get up above 50% to even make a light mark.
I bet either your laser tube is shot or the power source is bad. It happens. They’ll have you run a couple tests to confirm the issue and send you a replacement part for whatever is bad.
At least your head has decent tooling the one I have is actually broken and dont expect your door hinges to last I have now gone through 5 of them on the main door and yes I know Bill as well and my machine is set up correctly and my were tightened after I stole 2 off the tube door and its been over 9 months and still no replacements. Monport has the worst support on the planet.
Saw this video posted: "Oh heck ya!"
Saw it was an hour long: "Oh heck ya, now I know what I'm watching while working tomorrow!"🤘
Haha thanks man! A whole hour of laser setup!

by FAR the best Co2 setup vid I've seen, thank you sir
Dude! Thank you! I appreciate that!
Freedom units.... I love it!!

Great setup video, I have an 80w on the way and this gave me a bit more confidence before diving in
Thank you! It’s not hard once you know the steps to take. You’ll be up and running in no time!
Awesome video sir! Thank you for taking the time to put this out
Hey! Of course. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment! Much appreciated!
Your video is great. I ordered a Monport 100-watt CO2 laser today. Thank you.
Thank you! Awesome! I hope you like it. I am working on a project using it right now!

Great suggestion!
What model Ruida controller do they use? I'm assuming they are also using standard stepper motors vs Hybrid Servos motors.
It’s the RDC6442G controller. They are standard steppers!
You can square up the gantry with the belt also if it is really close. Great video.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to try that out next time. I appreciate it!
How has the z-axis drive been? It looks like it uses lead screws and chains instead of belts and ball screws.
Correct again! Haha! It’s been great! No issues, smooth operation.
Nicely done on this video. I'm headed into a buy-a-laser this year, and I tend to over research specs and setup details. Thanks for this.
Hey! Of course! Glad it was helpful. I’m the same way. I like to know almost everything about a product before I pull the trigger.
Is belt tension not something that has to be calibrated?
It’s a good thing to check! I personally haven’t encountered an issue with it. I suppose if your machine squeals you could check that as a solution! Good call out.
Great video … you lost me on the last adjustment of the actual nozzle when you went from the crescent shape to the pin point. How did you do that and adjust the laser so it quit hitting the bezel side?
Thank you! Once all the other mirrors are dialed in, adjusting the last mirror on the laser head solved that for me.
So I have the 100w laser and I’m waiting on my chiller. Is it okay to turn on and square up everything as long as I’m not actually firing the laser?
Congrats on the purchase! Should be fine to move the gantry around without the chiller. Its main function is to cool the water that gets pumped around the laser tube. Just don’t fire the laser at all and you should be good.
I noticed the lasertube has tape on it should you remove the clear tape?
Hey! My manual says it’s not a problem, so I left it.

I learned all about lasers from Chris Knight, Mitch Taylor and Kent. Prof Hathaway didn't help much though.
I’ll have to look them up! Thank you!

@ yeah already did some of them. Didn’t help that it got damaged in shipping so they’re sending me a new top cover as well.
@PCPerks757 I bet that did it! Some of these shipping companies are horrible!
Magnets?
I’m a failure! Lol. I just added them to the description! Not bad. Might end up going with some magswitch if they have a good sale in the future.
