      It's an interesting line that I really hadn't previously considered properly; this certainly suggests more back story to the Doctor than we see on screen. What has he tried, unsuccessfully, to change?

  • @MrPaulMorris
    @MrPaulMorris ปีที่แล้ว +37

    11:11 "Did this guy really just teach science at Coal Hill?". Well, no; a man of his age in 1963 would have served in the Armed Forces under National Service and with his education and class might well have been an officer. This would account for his natural assumption of leadership and combat skills. It might also account for the survival skills that allowed him to make fire back in the opening story.

    As a science teacher, Ian no doubt knew enough biology and human anatomy to apply pressure to nerve cluster points etc, but more likely he learnt some unarmed combat during his National Service.

      Might make sense,but that would imply Ian would have to be at least in his late 30’s or early 40’s to have served in WW2,I spose maybe he could have been to Korea,that would make more sense,but I would also ask if he was so good at unarmed combat from military service why would he bother to become a school teacher?

  • @Talisguy
    @Talisguy ปีที่แล้ว +25

    I'm pleasantly surprised by how racist the historicals aren't, thus far. Barbara's idea that the Aztecs wouldn't have been conquered if it weren't for the human sacrifice is very dated - she's *possibly* right in the sense that the Spanish found it very easy to rally rival cultures against the Aztecs because the Aztecs had a history of invading their neighbours for sacrifices, which certainly didn't help the Aztec Empire's chances of survival, but the narrative of Cortes the gentle explorer who only conquered the Aztecs because he was horrified by their religious practices has been thoroughly debunked - but other than that (which you can't really hold against the show, because this was the prevailing historical narrative at the time,) the story's take on the Aztecs is surprisingly sympathetic and nuanced.

    • @hyperion3145
      @hyperion3145 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Not just that but seeing as how the Spanish conquered so many other people that didn't do what the Aztecs did... It's pretty niave thinking they still wouldn't want to cut them down.
      Though you could also see Barbara as taking a kind of "white savior" role by trying to "civilize" the Aztecs.

    The Doctors little romance subplot is one of the reasons I hate it when some fans focus so much on the idea of the first Doctor being hard nosed anti-hero. It not only ignores the progress the character makes through this portion of the B&W era, but it kind of disservice Hartnell who was trying to branch out of tough guy roles.
    I swear I feel there is a breed of Whovian that just wants the Doctor to act like Frank Castle.

    • @paulhunter6742
      @paulhunter6742 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no idea who Frank Castle could be, yet I thought little romantic interplay between Hartnett and Aztec woman was wonderful touch. His expressions spoke volumes especially after she told him accept his proposal by drinking Coco...

    • @omega1397
      @omega1397 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulhunter6742 Frank Castle is a Marvel character, a violent and brutal vigilante. when written well he's very interesting, cold hearted with tinge of villainy that makes you grateful his target is mafiosos and sex traffickers. A veteran from a war that became a vigilante after his family was ripped to shreds, though it always makes you think, and outright stated in one comic, that his real home was war and all his family's death did was give him an excuse to wage another war. When done well, it's done very well. Other times he's just a generic vigilante you'd get in movies and tv. A very interesting form of villain protagonist, he doesn't do villainous stuff to innocents, but he certainly has the temperament and mentality of a potential villain. Unfortunately too many fans don't get the memo and think he's a cool tough guy that can do no wrong.
      Needless to say, an exaggeration that a cold hearted Doctor could be Castle but I get where OP is coming from lol. Too many fans want the Doctor to be some sort of vengeful killer.

    I've always liked to believe this is the first canon instance of the Doctor fulfilling his duties as a timelord. When he says he knows you can't rewrite history he's actually not referring to past experience. He's referring to his innate understanding of time that the ninth doctor later describes. I like the idea that that's the reason he gets so angry about it.
    Edit: Also, whilst I do believe that the doctor did have a deep respect for the woman (I forget her name) I think he was ultimately using her for information and had no intention of marrying her. It shows a deeper cunning and mercenary nature whilst also showing a more sensitive side to him. I've always thought the first doctor was incredibly nuanced in this episode.

    "Serenity... we must have a garden of our own"... hmm, maybe this explains why the First Doctor was so fond of gardens towards the end of his life - Three Doctors, Five Doctors, the novelisation of The Massacre even has him hanging about in his garden in the prologue and epilogue.

      In the original pitch for 'Doctor Who' (a series called "The Troubleshooters") the idea was for a group of scientists to explore space. However, Sydney Newman noted that the educational aspect might be difficult to communicate to kids at home as the scientists already know everything.
      It might be that same idea; there's more conflict if the character isn't as well informed.

    It's not true that the Spanish were unaware of the positive aspects of Aztec civilization. Quite the contrary, they were in total awe of it, as it appeared superior to their own. Cortez attempted to expunge the religion while retaining the overall civilization, which is essentially what Barbara is trying to do in this story. In any event, the idea of preserving the civilization of a conquered territory is a very modern one, and a product of a time when conquest itself is frowned upon, so it's rather anachronistic to expect people from centuries ago to think that way.

There's quite a bit of 60's racism in Doctor Who yeah, but the way the moral cultural nuances, sensibilities and clashes are worked in this is better than many modern stories (of any IP, not only Doctor Who) imo, which just shows how DW was quite unique for its time, I think. I've never cared too much for the historical stories in Doctor Who. But in the case of The Aztecs, it helped that I didn't know too much about the Aztecs, and that it was well-written, especially the part about Barbara trying to change history. It's really surprising that a show like Doctor Who, where time-travel is so important, that they don't cover this point very often. Can history be changed or can't it?
    If it can, then there's a lot more reason for the Time Lords to exist, as a sort of time police protecting the timeline, and it better explains how the Doctor became a renegade if he tried to make changes to the timeline that he thought would make things better.
