Did it go back Sammy or did it have a date with the taxidermist? Its a decent lump of fish. Hard to believe theyve been caught in excess of 10kg in Kalbarri WA, theyd be a sight to see 😲

Wow dude! That was fantastic. Right in the feels!!!!
My hardest won and most memorable capture was my first (and only) mangrove jack. Headed up a small mangrove creek in the Burnett river right in the middle if Bundy. Was in at first light and out after dark. Spent the day with miss hits and dropped fish. About midday i got a nice flatty around 60cm, and that gave me the motivation to go on. I kayaked all the way to the limits of both arms of the creek, all the while casually being annoyed with the midgies.... it was my first time dealing with QLD midgies i was in shorts n tshirt. So the next month was pure hell dealing with the 90% body/bite coverage. So after 10hrs i was over it and decided to head out and home. But im not done till im in the car, so i chucked on a 120mm kietech swim impact in white and trolled it about 20m behind as i made my way back. And finally... BOOM and a decent fish screamed off and into the mangrove. I thought id snagged up. Sat still for a second and tug tug fish on. After muscling it out of the roots and struggling in the yak i pulled in a 38cm jack and i cannot put the excitement and relief into words! :)

Hitzke my proudest moment would’ve been bream fishing with my then 4 year old daughter, using a size 12 hook, a running sinker, 4lb fluorocarbon leader and cockle for bait. She casts out a few moments later hooks into a fish, drag screaming and she freaks out. A little support and encouragement she fought her first “big” fish for about 5min. Get the fish to the bank, grab leader and land her first soapie coming in at 45cm! Man you can not beat that feeling and that ear to ear smile she had afterwards!!

Great catch Sammy. Very lucky in the shallows with your technique. Never ever be in the same depth of water as the fish.
Caught them nearly a metre on Fraser.
And it's the last 20 to 30 m where you land or lose them. Tip:: rod tip down parallel to the beach walk backwards till he's beached. Always gets my heart racing watching good tailor get beached.
    Good stuff.
Gets even more crazy landing 25kg GT and 20 kg Spanish on lures from Fraser.
YOU GOTTA ADD THAT TO YOUR BUCKET LIST.

So interesting seeing people targeting tailor down in Australia. We fish for them in the Northeast United States all the time. It's mostly the same but a bit different. The bluefish (Tailor) here are bigger on average but less respected as a sportfish. Great to see appreciation for them. My biggest one was about 94cm and 7kg on bait about 20 years ago. They recently put in some new regulations to protect them here which is good to see.

My most memorable capture. Fishing for bream solo on a homemade 40mm blade lure, 4lb Fireline, & 8lb fluorocarbon trace. I hooked I thought was a snag, but the snag had headshakes and swam towards my tinny. Then the fun began. 1hour later (after chasing with the electric outboard and rummaging around to find a well buried gaff whilst fighting the fish) I landed a 30lb mulloway in the Hawkesbury River. Went home early that day. Figured it was more important to preserve the fish for consumption rather than fishing all morning with a fish way too big for my 40litre esky.

Hi Sammy, i'm from Hervey Bay and on the side of the sandy straits, in August, we used to fish the incomming tide on full moon with pilchards. The majority of the Tailor we caught were choppers but there were also good greenbacks amongst them. We'd bleed them and give what our needey neighbours wanted so they could enjoy them fresh. For the remainder of the tailor fillets i'd smoke them and they'd last for weeks in the fridge. Perfect for putting in the microwave for 1 minute and adding a scrape of butter on them, served with salad and chips. BTW congratulations on your big Tailor; what a brute.

My proudest fishing moment was catching an unofficial Australia record Permit of 6.5 kg on 4 kg line while trolling a gold Scorpion lure in a rented tinny off Settlers Beach between Cossack and Point Samson in October, 1996. I was by myself and spent nearly an hour and a half chasing and fighting this fish before finally getting out of the boat and landing and weighing it in the shallows of the small estuary near Johns Creek Boat Harbour at Point Samsaon. I then spent about 15 minutes reviving the exhausted fish in the shallows before finally seeing it swim slowly away. It's the only Permit I've ever caught and it was an unofficial Australian line class record. It was the fish of a lifetime that I will never forget.

For the really big tailor (shad, elf) as we call it in South Africa 5 kgs and over the best way we get alot of them on is with live tailor as bait.. We throw out a 6 or 7oz graph sinker and slide out a smaller tailor with about a meter of nilon tied from the slide and then hooks tied on a plastic coated steel wire trace (blood wire) joined to the nilon so they don't bite us off.. Works best for the huge tailor they don't think twice about canabalizing a smaller tailor👍

Had a similar experience with my PB Tailor, caught last year in Wollongong on a Pillie with 5/0 tru turns. Off the rocks, usually only caught max 40 - 50 cm Tailor and heaps of Salmon in this spot. Had a good feeling with lots of wash and a bit of chop one afternoon, first caught got a little bump and then massive hookup. Didn't see it jump for ages and it was overcast so not clear to see in general, then in close I thought I saw that big eye and green flash in the wave. Told my mate I thought it was a tailor, he called bullshit. Then pulled it up in the white wash with the wave, and when he water receded we couldn't believe our eyes. Proper sketchy landing, had to leader it up some rocks and barnacles in between sets. Went 80 as well! Had to release that one but will probably be keeping the next greenie. Will be a long time before I beat that!

We call them bluefish here in the USA, if you ever find yourself in NYC area in early May / June or October we get runs of real monsters, 10 kilo fish are not uncommon and 3 - 6 kg class fish are the norm. Some big striped bass mixed in the lot too.

Mate I’m with you all the way Tailor from the surf chasing with long casts of metal bait profile lures is my no.1 favourite fishing pursuit watching you catch that one which I actually thought from the footage was over a metre it looked that good caused my heart to beat out of my chest can’t imagine how you felt. Mate to tell you my fav.angling memory seems like an irrelevance but anyway I caught a 53 cm greenback up at Urunga at the end of the famous boardwalk out at Hungry Head Beach early one morn last Sept. Just dusting off the gear almost as we speak for my assault on a piscatorial prize this Winter. Have to wait and see what turns up.

I spent two nights at Faust chasing barra. The first night I got smashed up by some monster fish and lost my favourite fizzer. I hooked 8 fish but landed none. The next night I hooked 3 fish and landed them all...none of them were under a metre with the largest going 119cm. All of them were on soft plastics with 20lb line (80lb leader). I don't think I've ever been happier.

@@SammyHitzkeFishing It's awesome fun. Couple of pointers - use soaked chicken lay pellets as berley and drop small bombs of berley at your feet (much better than bread theses days), use cooked prawns and salt them down (more picker resistant and pigs just love them), run 20 lb - 30 lb mono (Maxima Ultragreen is awesome) straight through to a mustad 92254 1/0 hook with a pea sized ball straight down on top of the hook - short casts, keep the bait moving and wafting around and that's it (have found run-out tide more productive - as water gets more stirred up and it becomes rush hour). All of my pigs are caught in less than 3 m of water (often 1.5 m). Give em a go and good luck!

My biggest is well over 20 pounds, thing looked like a hybrid between a amberjack and bluefish mix. Once they get over 15 pounds they start to look a little different.
