  • Estonia has welcomed more than 42,000 refugees from Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Among the arrivals were not only children in need of education, but also experienced Ukrainian teachers. This is where the local NGO Mondo, in partnership with UNHCR, stepped in and created the Mondo Ukrainian Academy, an initiative that provides training to Ukrainian teaching staff about the Estonian education system and linguistic and cultural diversity. So far, more than 200 Ukrainian educators have been involved in the initiative.
The academy is also a win for the refugee pupils. Having a teacher from Ukraine at school who can relate to their situation, speak their language and provide a connection to their shared homeland is a source of comfort that helps the pupils thrive.
