    In high school, we had one oboist in my school who won a national award and played for an assembly. There was some squeaking, and the rest of the school snickered. I played alto sax at the time and the thought of playing a mouthpiece made of two reeds back to back was wild to me, still is. Woodwind nightmare-mode. I was impressed and wished everyone else understood how difficult that instrument was to play. It's like a classy, less dramatic clarinet. Clear and bold, but utterly unforgiving.

      Why squeaking and snickering?

    • @rebdomine1
      @rebdomine1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1985cactus With a saxophone, you have a solid mouthpiece, with one reed vibrating against it, and it will squeak easily unless your lip placement is firm and tight. With an oboe, the two reeds don't have a stable surface to sit against. Your mouth has to do all the work or there will be squeaks. The oboist at my school might have been nervous in front of a whole school of people they knew, and there were a few squeaks. I guess most of the school was expecting the performance to be flawless. They just didn't understand what a merciless beast the oboe is.

    I play the oboe and it was really cool at 2:28 to see the oboist’s choice of fingerings. If I am correct, they were using alternative fingerings to lower their pitch. I do this but I didn’t think professionals did this! Super cool close up!

    • @nomorebushz
      @nomorebushz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s not an alternative fingering. Are use the E key very often even as I turn the orchestra to a 440. It gives a different clarity to the town that’s easy for the strings to distinguish. It is not to change the pitch. It changes the timbre.

      +Sofia Nishimura Are you playing in a school orchestra, or concert band? There is a HUGE difference, with regard to repertoire and instrumentation. In concert band, the flutes generally get a lot of the lyrical lines, usually because of the sheer number of flutists in the school systems, and also because they need to be heard above the volume created by the brass section, which is usually quite large (and, unfortunately, quite loud). The oboe can be lost in such an overwhelming situation, as can instruments like the bassoon and bass clarinet.

    i particularly love the harmony of oboe and bassoon playing together.
    i once wrote a small sample of a chord sequence i found that sounded interesting.
    i wrote different arpeggios in all chords, used the voice of a flute an oboe and 3 basoons(to play the chords as chords), and it sounds so good all together. much better than any of them alone.

    As a composer/conductor, one of my scores features the oboe. :)
    It's a fun, spirited piece that highlights the beautiful sound of the oboe. But seriously, if anyone wants the music, just let me know. It's VERY busy in piano, and is influenced by nature, and kids, and the wonder and joy that comes along with children's imagination, plus nature.
    As for the demonstration, Philharmonia, thank you for the information!

    • @patheddles4004
      @patheddles4004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mackey, the problem is that oboe is ridiculously freaking difficult to play and to sound good on.
      I started out on clarinet and then switched to trumpet, and I have tried my friend's (professional standard) oboe a few times - here to tell you, oboe is extremely demanding for both strength and skill. I mean I /can/ get a pretty good sound out of it, but:
      - The start of the note sounds bad and I need to adjust until it sounds good
      - It's only one note - forget trying to play anything musical
      - After that one note, my cheeks ache and I'm gasping for breath.
      And then, look at the oboist in this video:
      - Professional, probably second- or third-tier by world standards (which sounds like a diss but is actually paying respect)
      - Sounds good, but even an outsider like me can hear a big difference between his sound and the top-tier oboists.
      - This is literally his full-time job, and yet you can see the physical strain of just playing a short passage or two to demonstrate.
      Again I'm not dissing him - just making the point that the instrument itself is intrinsically really freaking hard to play. So yeah, have some respect from a non-oboist. :-)

    Quite strange to see a professional oboist puff out his cheeks and the rest of his embouchure while he plays. One has much better pitch, volume, and articulate control by setting the embouchure and keeping it in.
    His glissandos and flutter tonging are phenomenal though.

    I played tenor saxophone in high school orchestra and the only music available for me to play was for clarinet, needless to say I drowned out all the clarinets! Hang in there, there is a reason that you play the oboe. Learn it well and hold your head up high and be proud to play a difficult instrument. It will enrich your life for years afterward.

    I will have played oboe for four years this fall, and I'm definitely still learning. Stuff like making the middle "c"s not as terrible and getting the upper notes in tune. I'm also bugging my director to let me play the cor anglais (we call it the English horn in our country though) for Isle of Calypso. I would love to learn vibrato and double tonging, but that's for when I more time.

    • @philharmonia_orchestra
      @philharmonia_orchestra  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's brilliant, you have a good mindset. Any musician, regardless of experience, should always believe that there is something left to learn, you will be better for it. There's no quick way around practice, but if you enjoy learning and developing your abilities, who's to say it can't be just as enjoyable. Good luck

      Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) Thank you very much. Practicing was a chore for the first couple of years of playing because of how boring the music was. I would literally play quarter notes for six measures then rest for twenty four. Practices actually started getting interesting once the solos and melodies start coming in. Not to mention the different techniques that I have to use besides tonguing quarter notes. Sorry for the late reply, and I will be looking forward to more double reed videos!
