The Philips White-SON lamps are indeed a version of an HPS lamp that operates at a much higher pressure than standard HPS lamps. Because of the higher internal pressure, which results in an almost incandescent light color, you sacrifice lamp life from 24,000 hours to around 10,000 hours. I have a couple 50 watt versions of these lamps and ballasts that I retrofitted a couple pulse-start metal halide fixtures, one being an outdoor bollard fixture. These lamps require a special ballast in order to operate properly. The standard ballast for a 50-watt HPS lamp is an ANSI S-68. For the 50-watt White SON lamp, it is an S-104. I believe these lamps will work on standard ballasts, but will not reach full operating potential (will have the same color characteristics as a standard HPS lamp instead of the whiter, incandescent color). The advent of low-wattage pulse-start metal halide basically made White SON obsolete. White SON was never popular in the US, and I don’t think I had ever seen any when they were in use. Any of these White SON bulbs are usually very expensive when found on eBay or other lighting supply vendors.
