Back in those days, none of us imagined that a 3D weapon-based fighter could become a gargantuan franchise where you wade into battle, hacking and slashing armies of grunts on repeat.
First let’s give the shoutout for how slapping this games soundtrack is! Being that this was on an engine similar to Tekken 2, the details of the backgrounds and her top are impressive. Diao Chan was my main for this game, and now looking at the series in 2022, VERY humble beginnings, but I had much more fun with this game than it’s sequels.
Oh yeah, that's right. I keep forgetting Dynasty Warriors started off as a vs. fighter and only became a "slaughter mooks by the thousands" franchise with the sequels.
This was the first and only fighting game have to be made in the dynasty warriors series while the later games will stick to hack and slash genre instead of fighting genre.
I often wonder would the Dynasty Warriors get as much success if they continue on as a 3D weapons-based fighting game instead of hack-n-slash game. Also, i did not realize that last guy you were fighting was Lu Bu himself, i'm just so use to him in his current gear that it's just so strange to see him in a basic armor. 😅
That would be crazy.. Would they be around 100 chars if they kept on as a weapons based fighter? The roster is freakin huge now.. Also to not forget two Samurai Warriors chars are actually in this game, too..
Pretty crazy that it all started out as a fighting game.. That roster is like 100+ playable now.. Imagine if this was still a fighting series? Crazy.. I think its best the way it is though but they could do another fighter for fun(though, in recent memory we do have Koihime, which is gender swapped DW)..

I remember renting this game on PlayStation from Blockbuster video back in the fall of 1998.
