Jimmy's Take | Browns owners say stadium options are $1B renovation or new $2B dome outside city

  • Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam say the team is down to two options when it comes to their future stadium site: a $1 billion dollar renovation to their existing stadium, or a domed stadium outside of the city at double the cost.
The Haslams addressed the stadium situation and other team matters Monday while in Orlando at the NFL Owners Meetings. They added that neither option is better than the other at this point.
One of the key points the duo confirmed is that they do have an option to purchase 176 acres of land in Brook Park not far from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. That story was first reported by Ken Prendergast of NEOTrans blog in early February.
In response to the Brook Park speculation last month, the team confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that they were looking at additional sites in Northeast Ohio to build a new stadium in addition to efforts to get a renovation deal done for Cleveland Browns Stadium.
Also last month, two Cleveland City Councilmembers told Signal Cleveland's Nick Castele that the Browns proposed a 50-50 split on a billion-dollar stadium renovation project, with state and local governments picking up upwards of $500 million, during a round of meetings last October.

I understand - we don't know for sure, but I have a feeling they will pay for almost all of it. They have the money. To them it's an investment. If they can control the project and what is built-out on the site they acquire, they will get more continuous revenue from its operations. I believe that is the model for many of the recent new stadium projects. They wont get that kind of revenue if they share half the cost with taxpayers. The only help "we" will need to provide will be to make the road, rail network, utilities, etc around the site work correctly to support what is going on. I hope the site near the airport works out because I think it would be one of kind and would help the airport become more than what it is now. Lots of possibilities to grow our region in a positive way.

Not to mention the Super Bowl. It seems like a no brainer from a business perspective. The city can redevelop the lake front where the old stadium is and include a small museum documenting all f the football history as that happened there. For better or worse, the days of ‘ice bowl’ games on rock hard frozen turf in howling arctic wind are ending, as much as I hate to admit it. There’s just way too much money in the NFL now for that.

@@mikef9126 Beyonce came to cleveland so why couldn't Taylor swift? Its about the market it has nothing to do with the venue 9/10. which is why cities with similar venue situations get events that we don't. Cleveland is way too underdeveloped at the moment to host something like a Super bowl. Downtown needs to be developed considering its the area people are going to visit most when they come here. So taking money away from a place where half the buildings are already empty anyways will only hurt that. no one is coming here and taking a stroll through brook park Ohio. Why would that be anywhere money should be going to. Tower City is a ghost town and cleveland as a whole is lacking in things to do. I fail to belive there's an attraction that could be put in the place of the browns stadium that would bring more people to the city of cleveland. It needs to stay where it is.

It is amazing that we are revisiting this issue yet AGAIN. What's-his-name took the original Browns and left Cleveland because he wanted a better stadium WITH A ROOF. So, we built a new stadium and got the name (but not the team) back. Then the Indians wanted a stadium, so we built them a new stadium. Now you have the stadium idea what about the layout of the outside parking area and access roads How can you keep traffic from not backing up. There should be a Road for Stadium traffic only Like Stadum Drive then its controlled on game day/event day and well as Airport Traffic road So On game day or event day like nothing impaced those who are going to the airport has there own road, those going to the stadium, venue has there own road that seperate from the airport road. for example isf Taylor swift put a concert on at the facility no one will be able to get into the parking lot of the venue or the airport because it will be filled with swiffities.

The Browns stadium would be close to a half-mile south of that, closer to Snow Road. The busier North/South runway is about 1.5 miles from where the stadium would be placed and planes would not fly over any part of the property on take off or landing. There is an old hotel at Hopkins next to Arrival/Departure area of terminal that may be as high, if not higher, as a closed stadium. I would be shocked if it can't be figured out. Too many positives to overlook. I think it would be a one-of-a-kind project with extremely easy access for those in the region and outside of Ohio flying in for events. Slam dunk to me.

Land swap. Haslams should swap land with the city of Cleveland. The city gives the Haslams the old stadium and Burke. Haslams give the city the Brookpark land. Haslam could then build on the lake and develop the lakefront. Cleveland could knock down their garbage tiny airport and build a big, new, world class airport. Everyone wins.

And yet when Modell was in municipal and the city is going to condemn it. He was the villain for even asking for repairs to be paid for by the city while they built Jacobs, Field and Gund arena not to mention the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. I hate to say it, but my families city is full of a bunch of damn hypocrites.

A Brookpark stadium would be an absolute fucking Boondoggle. Right now you can take the Train to the stadium. Would you be able to do that at the proposed location at Brookpark? Nope. All the selling points about it having "new restaurants" is all contingent on the stadium being there in the first place, which is only 8-games a year of increased traffic to those restaurants. Maybe 12 throughout the whole year.
Literally everything they said is a reason is BS.

Imagine that stadium sitting there empty while taxpayers build them a new one with the Browns making money off parking instead of the City. The taxpayer subsidies are the only reason a new stadium would be profitable for team. Imagine hundreds of millions of dollars more being spent on education.

I will be happy when that crap stadium is demolished. The city rushed to build it because the Browns were coming back, and it had to be built quickly. Not to mention it was built cheaply with cheap materials, and when the foundation cracked before week 1, 1999, I thought the stadium might be doomed then. Its amazing tht crap stadium lasted this long, but it has, sadly. 1B renovation, whats that going to do? Spray perfume on a turd? Nah, the city built it, they can eat it, I prefer state of the art, well built things that are multipurpose.

This choice is painfully obvious, and it has been for some time. Get that stadium off the lake and put a dome on the new one. Our lakefront has been a complete disaster for decades, putting a stadium there was stupid on top of dumb. Even a dome stadium in the current location makes zero sense. A billion dollars into a dump, it makes no sense that means they will probably do it.

If the game was still played like it was in the 80’s, I would say keep it outside. The blue collar mentality team just doesn’t cut it in today’s game. When you’re in the gun 95% of the time chucking it around the yard, it just doesn’t make sense. As a fan I didn’t mind it but would have preferred to be inside instead of watching Brian Sipe throw an interception to end the game when it was 157 degrees below zero. It’s all good, just saying. Build a dome already, it’s time.

Do a Dome on the current location. Get over the weather and Lake Erie effect home field advantage theory. Do a Dome, get a Super Bowl, Big Ten Football Championship, CFP championship, concerts, NCAA Final Four, etc. and get the most bang for your buck! Cleveland Brown fans are the home field advantage, not the weather.
