That's a cautionary tale if I ever heard one. Kids, pay attention, if someone ever tells you "go ahead, I do it all the time," don't do it. By the way, that Remington is a sweet looking pistol.

Be careful in the snow no more falling. 60 years ago when l was a young nipper l got a hold of an Iver Johnson 32 top break. I loaded up some black powder cartridges to plink with. (A foolish mistake) My first shot bounced off a rock maple and hit me in the leg right in the shin bone. Like you l had a bruise and was pretty embarrassed. Ive never told this story to anyone. It was a life lesson that has served me well over the years.

Mike next time you’re bored how about a video showing how to properly sharpen your straight edge shaving blade. I purchased one a few years ago and just couldn’t get it right so it sits in my gun safe. Love all your videos most thankful for your knowledge and your passion for what you do! Thanks for keeping me occupied! Respectfully JM

I once shot a large log with a 22.cal revolver, and heard the bullet whizz past my head. There was no led or other shots in it and it still bounced right back. Since then I have never shot at a log or a tree lol

As a 15 year old boy, I fired a 22 short at a discarded car tire only to have it bounce right back and graze my right cheek as it sailed past in my direction! I understand your story VERY WELL!

I had the same thing happen once with a golf ball. Hit it from the tee, it went out through a tunnel of trees and hit the last one. It bounced straight back at me and rolled to a stop under my foot. Net distance on that drive was about 4 inches. My brother in law has never let me live that down. I really enjoy your videos. As an idea for a future video you might consider the guns of the R.I.C, the Royal Irish Constabulary. They were a paramilitary police force designed to keep the Irish in check during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They had their own system for choosing firearms, which included unique versions of revolvers and rifles.

I shaved with a straight razor until 1969 . I was drafted into the US Army and they frowned upon the use of said equipment. They promptly confiscated my razor and issued me the standard safety razor. I was clean shaven for the most part until 2010 when I retired as a police officer. Now days I am often mistaken for Billy Gibbons, and sometimes Willie Nelson. Haven't shaved nor had a haircut sense Jan. first 2010. I love it. Like the heck out of your videos as well.

Yep. Been there. I was teaching my friends daughter to shoot a 9mm handgun while he sat behind her on the ground loading mags. She shot a 8 in steel plate at 50 yds. The copper jacket zipped back hitting her dad's left index fingernail, bounced off and cut open the knuckle of his right hand. The first thing he said was "$#!t... your mom is never gonna let you go shooting with us again!"

I took it to heart when you asked, "if you liked the video, give it a big thumbs up." However, since this video was a bit of a "fall back and punt", I decided that I would instead give you a small thumbs up. But, try as i might, I could not find the small and large thumbs ups, so I gave you a regular size thumbs up to honor your commitment to giving us this video rather than no video at all.

I shave with a straight razor too. Never take your attention away from the edge, or you will regret it. Stretch your skin and very light edge pressure only. If you feel you need more pressure, the edge needs stropping or refreshing. I gave myself a razor cut twice. It looked like I had been dueling at a German university. Fortunately, the cuts were very clean and soon healed without any scar. It takes awhile to develop shaving skill with a straight razor, but they give a great shave once one learns how to use and maintain them.

Next he produced an old 1911 .45, and said lets try our luck. It was loud down there and I don't know where they all went, but it was funnnn...

I hear you brother, I was shot in a very similar manner. The differences are that someone else fired the bullet and it passed into a sand berm backstop. It struck another bullet in the backstop bounce back out of the sand and hit me in the elbow. Like your situation it was virtually spent but hit hard enough to raise a serious welt and leave a nasty bruise. Lessons for us to share so that others will hopefully not get into that situation.

I congratulate you for salvaging a video from the snowbanks! I live between Carlisle and Mechanicsburg so I have been feeling trapped as much as you have. Thanks for sharing the cautionary tale. I don't like indoor ranges and don't even use the one at WSSA in the worst of weather, and that seems to be a well-engineered and constructed range. The older we grow, the more cautious we become. Anyway, your video was truly entertaining and I needed that. Thanks!

Good on you Mike for taking up the straight razor. I did the same a few years ago on realizing that 100 years ago every man could do this thing and I couldn't. Yes, a bit of a learning curve. Also an activity where the touch is paramount, timidity is as bad as too much boldness!

I recommend Yak-Trax. They’re easily put on/removed snow cleats. They look like bits of barbed wire on rubber netting. They were a lifesaver when I was stationed in Missouri. When it’s icy the Walmart parking lot is fantastically dangerous and an open field nearly as much. I don’t want to even think about going shooting in those conditions without them.

I have a similar story. I took an 1851 Navy out to test penetration of .36 roundball through wood. Normally I got 3-4 boards of 1 inch pine. One time, I lucked out and hit a knot of wood. I shot and immediately felt a smack above my femoral artery (!!!!) and looked down to see a flattened roundball at my feet. It was still hot to the touch. My leg was slightly bruised. The first board was half penetrated and uncracked. Now, this might seem like a weak result, but consider that it probably takes 150-200 foot pounds of force to flatten a ball of lead. Try it sometime by pressing on one. Consider that force being dumped entirely into your midsection. That would easily penetrate to the vitals. Had that shot hit my femoral artery directly, rather than ricocheting into it, I would be bleeding out and unable to walk for help. For desert fighting, that would do the trick.

My "I shot my self" moment was with a S&W 642. Shooting into a log. When I witnessed the bullet make a return trip everything was slow motion. The bullet landed on my left forearm with the force of a flea's kick. I burnt that log and have never stood that close to any target since.

Thanks for the video and thanks to those who've added similar comments. I too had a .38 S&W bullet out of an Enfield Tanker come bouncing back towards me from 25yds after hitting a chunk of wood. I don't know if it hit another lodged bullet or what exactly happened, but I can still see the bullet bouncing back towards me! The Tanker only got shot into thin cardboard after that!

Mike that's quite the story. Mine is very similar, however it was not in a basement. Went shooting with my uncle. I handed him my new 40 SW to try. We were also shooting at a log. His shot came back and hit me in the shoulder with a heavy thump. Left me with a bruise about 4 in diameter. I also remember my first thought was what am I going to tell my wife.

Good video Mike, looking forward to your next about UK police guns and the Texas Rangers. I was shot in similar circumstances to yours. Back in the early 1970s I worked for a gun shop here in the UK, a time when cartridge handguns were allowed. The boss and I were using up a part box of Eley Kynoch .455 ammo through a Webley Mk6 in large garage attached to the back of the shop where we often went to shoot into a pile of logs. The boss took a couple of shots while I observed from the rear left rear side. The 3rd shot was followed by the sound of a heavy spinning slug which penetrated my jeans, struck my shin bone and fell onto my shoe. OUCH !!! I know what you mean when you said it's like being struck with a hot hammer. The damage was a trickle of blood from a scuff and a big red mark which later turned into a bruise. Still hopping up and down in pain, he asked if I wanted a shot....needless to say I declined the invitation.

You’re very fortunate that you didn’t get injured worse by blunt force trauma. I used to shoot high powered break barrel .22 air guns in the single wide mobile home I used to have doing 20 yard shooting from one end of the place to the other shooting a cast iron frying pan with an 18.13 grain domed lead pellet with about 20 to 25 foot pounds of energy and I’m lucky that I never got struck by a ricochet. Nowadays I only shoot my current air gun with about 15 to 20 foot pounds of energy at 2 liter unopened mtn dew bottles from 20 yards away outdoors in a sand pit

I had a similar experience, shooting a Taurus Judge someone handed to me to try out. I aimed at the tree stump they were pointing towards, squeezed the trigger, and instantly felt a narrow, red hot punch right between my eyes. It drew a drop of blood and no more. Apparently firing self defense 410 shells at a hickory stump about ten feet away was a bad idea..
This was witnessed by several friends, including the owner of the gun who couldn't believe what had just happened. So he took the next shot from the same spot, and almost got a broken finger from the ricochet that hit his middle knuckle on his right hand. We stopped shooting after that...

Many years ago I bought a used S&W 28 highway patrolman to convert to 45Colt and later did. But while it was still 357, I loaded up some very light loads in 38 Special cases. I set on the ground, knees apart and back aginst a post. I was resting my elbows on the inside of my knees. The target was aginst heavy oak tembers some 20 yards out. I was amused that the bullets would just drive to depth in the wood. Then it happened. One bounced back. I could see it coming skipping off the ground. There was nothing I could do. It hit me in the left testicle! Fortunately, it was winter and I was wearing insulated overalls. The injury didn't draw blood but it sure took away my wind.

I had a similar incident - a freak ricochet at the range spat my .44 slug right back at me and hit me square in the forehead. Bloody hurt 'n' all. Still have the bullet sitting on my gun cabinet.

Try to do a vid on the Asp pistols. I’ve seen one, and repaired an original holster for it but don’t know much about the history

Mike, love all your videos. Six years ago, I shot myself in the foot doing a safety check. Can't be safe enough. Felt really stupid but was a great learning experience. I'm 67 and am Army veteran (not Mary) and have preached gun safety all my life. Keep up the good work. Love your black power pistol and conversion cylinder stuff.

Well Mike, you and I have more than than just being two old guys from Pennsylvania in common. I too have shot myself in the belly, while shooting at a stump. Only it was not a bullet mine ricocheted off of, mine was the stump was the center of the stump was frozen. I was using an 44cal Colt Navy.

My .32 S&W Long will go through two sides of a steel barrel. Pretty sure they'd do the job.

Maybe you could do a vid on firearms of the RCMP? Being a Canuck I'd find that real interesting.

Mike, I have been using only Gillette safety razors for years now, and own many, but I always wanted to try a straight razor. I just never dared to take that plunge.

I used to shave with a straight razor when I was younger. I had a stepson run into me and got a nasty cut on my ear. Had to switch to a safety razor when my hands got a bit shaky so I wouldn’t cut my own throat.

I once shot myself with a bb gun as a kid, maybe 7 or 8 if memory serves, and the story is pretty similar to yours. Was shooting a rifle at an indoor bb range sitting at the shooting table when I felt a sharp pinch just below my knee, looked down and realized my shot had ricocheted back at me. Didn't leave a dent or anything so I just shrugged and kept shooting.

My wife would have said, 'Well, that's what you get!"
I caught a .45lc in the cheek during a 3 gun sass competition, it splashed back off a steel plate. No visible damage just a need to change.
