I just had this problem. I installed my first home a/c system. I bought a Goodman 2 ton condenser and a Rheem 2 ton n-coil evaporator. I used the txv that came with the Rheem. My suction pressure was 150. I installed a piston and the pressure dropped to 45. I added 410 and my first a/c system is working fine now. A video is coming soon.

Would the wrong orifice cause the evaporator to freeze up?

Great video. Thank you very much. Can you explain the out gas if you open up line to look at piston. What pressure is in line ? Do you have to leave the machine off for a while before opening. Is this just for one gas in particular ? which gas (i think you mentioned the gas). If its a TXV expansion valve can you also open up this ? Im just new to air conditioning and still completing my studies. Michael

What size of piston should I use for a 4 ton 410 unit?

Today i came across an old carrier r22 system from 1988, Matching indoor outdoor unit neither have been replaced, i started it up for the first time this season New filter, Clean evap coil Clean condenser coil i experienced a bit of a low High side pressure just below 20° above outdoor ambient, My back pressure very low only about 45psi max, superheat showing 20° but as i added to it my back pressure would decrease before system starts to freeze up. Back press would keep decreasing, i partially blocked top of condenser to raise my high side pressure and as i did that my superheat went right down to 1-3° I was talking with my coworker and he is telling me the fixed orifice is over feeding could you do a video on this symptom? i enjoy how basic you explain and draw out issues and resolutions Thanks. Also i did retry running system twice with a day of it being off to fully thaw but nomatter what i did the back pressure would drop keep dropping and suction line start to freeze

This comment helped me prove that the piston was wrong, and causing freezing, while someone was rushing to tell me it's just low on refrigerant. The condenser cover did the trick. Now the company is ordering a new evap coil and the correct piston. Thank you for this neat trick!

So if you have a 3 ton evap with a 2 ton condenser......the 3ton evap piston has to be changed to a 2 ton piston....right?

Blue Collar yes. Installation instructions for these match ups can typically be found online

I have the same problem today but the unit start to freeze . my saturation temp in the coil was 29 and suction line temp was 39 can that be a piston problem ?

i experienced this today my coworker told me the piston was overfeeding, did you end up resolving your issue?

@@mattheebz8017 yes the piston was oversize
