    As promised last week this is my review of the new 40 mm Longines Spirit watches with a Black, Blue and silver dial. Just in case you missed the other video, here is a link: • Hands-on: The new LONG...
    The brand new Longines Spirit collection brings the 1832 founded manufacturer's rich heritage back to life. Linking history with innovation, the new models take traditional features from pilot’s watches and combine them with contemporary lines and codes. The oversized crown, the flange, the pronounced step around the crystal, the font of the dial, the diamond shape indexes and the large, luminous “baton” hands are all elements drawn from the days of pioneering aviation. Reworked and updated, they blend harmoniously with the overall contemporary design. In addition, great care has been taken with the various finishes on the details, whether brushed, matt, polished or in relief.
    Longines has fitted this range exclusively with self-winding movements (L888.4 and L688.4) with silicon hairsprings to guarantee extreme accuracy and increased longevity. The calibres, with a power reserve of 64 & 60 hours respectively, are chronometer-certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The advanced technology of this new collection is also complemented by the domed sapphire glass with multi-layered anti-reflective coating on both sides, screw in crown, and engraved case back secured with six screws.

    I had no interest in luxury watches, let alone watches in general, until I saw the Longines Spirit Watch in an advertisement on the internet. I haven't worn a watch for two decades now. But I think I've fallen in love with the Longines Spirit Watch that I have this burning desire to have it.

      I have a Mark xviii and I was thinking the same thing. In some ways these Longines are higher spec than the IWC. Applied numbers, considerably more lume, in house movement. My only 'concern' would be that it feels like an Homage to the Mark series of pilot watches. Blue dial 40 is my favourite.

    My favorite of the Spirit collection. Even though 50mm lug to lug on a 40mm watch is long. This size is about the limit of what my wrist size can wear comfortably, due to that lug to lug. My personal favorite of the three here is the one with the grained silver dial.

    Thanks for your work Alexander! It's great Longines are listening and paying attention to customers' feedback. Like you, I also believe most most the date wheel should match the dial. One thing I noticed in these last releases from Longines: Why are they using odd numbers for their lug widths? For customers who enjoy mixing a bit their leather straps with NATO or the bracelet 19 or 21mm still reduce the options.

    I have to say what a great watch, there are many such pilot type watches but this is the best of this type I have seen. Certainly in the sub £2000 range
    What I like is that 2 sizes are available, I would go for the 40mm. The only issue is at 50mm lug to lug the watch may not fit smaller wrists .The movement used is based on the ETA 2892 often regarded as the best ETA auto. I have several Eta 2892 based movement and the time keeping is Stella. The silicon hair spring should add extra accuracy and magnetic protection. There are several long articles buy watch makers who compare the 2892 to the very best high end movements such as Rolex and Omega. The 2892 achieves what they do but in a simple straightforward way. The 2892 avoids several problems encountered with hand winding the more common ETA 2824.
    Secondly the finish looks very high end. Longines watches often seen to almost get lost in a small sea of offerings by that company. I have often thought that the good ones are hidden buy the less impressive ones.
    The way forward for Longines is to reduce range size and up finish and build spec as this Spirt range demonstrates .
    Another good practice is the offering of a bracelet at the same cost as a leather strap. The bracelet could be considered one weakness as screw pins may be preferred by many although good pin systems are much safer than poor screw systems. The butterfly clasp may reduce adjustment a little but it looks as if half links are provided. This equal cost offering of bracelet contrasts companies such as Sinn who mark these up quite considerably . If watch is as good as it looks it could be a real problem for IWC and other high end manufactures. Fortunately watch snobs will disregard it as only a Longines , but watch lovers will snap them up as a great watch at a reasonable price. 5* to Longines.

      @Mister_Phafanapolis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WatchAdvisor I don't see why you can't. Comparing this Lawnjeans to a Sinn 556 or a Damasko DS30 is not completely unreasonable IMO. One is a little more dressy while the other two are a little more casual in style but all are pilot watches and all around between $1500 to $2000 on a bracelet. More like comparing a bosc to a d'anjou pear.
      Not like I'm comparing it to a G-Shock GMWB5000TCM-1 and claiming they're all sports watches on bracelets in the same price range.

    • @johnholkham2420
      @johnholkham2420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi I would add that I already own a Longines Flagship Heritage which is a really nice quality watch. May not be up there with a Rolex but for a quarter of the price of the most basic Rolex Longines are providing nice wearable watches with high end movements (eta 2892 very well regarded) plus Quality straps such as Alligator. Most detractors probably have not owned or worn these watches . The point is the Spirt provides near as possible IWC / Breitling watch experience quality , with possibly a better movement again at a fraction of the price. Yes the Hamilton is a good watch but hold the Spirt in hand , wear for a month and I think you will see there is a real difference. Why buy a Longines when you can buy a Chinese ripoff, well the Longines will provide pleasure for years to come way after the shine has worn off the Chinese copy. Longines provide quality at an affordable price. That said I still think their range needs thinning out especially at the budget end.

    I bought the black dial version on a dark brown leather strap about 6 weeks ago and absolutely love it. It is almost perfect and incredibly comfortable. I wear it every day and think it is amazing value for money. I am confused though by the box it comes in. Mine came in a high gloss mid brown wood box which is high luxury indeed, but I have seen reviews and ads for the watch where it is shown in a standard black leather type covered box similar to many other watch boxes.

    • @WatchAdvisor

      There might be differences ... I can't confirm this, but there might... Where are you based and where were the ones based with the different box... I can try to find out... @@WatchAdvisor Hi, I am a Brit based in France and the watch was bought in Holland. I noticed that those for sale in Europe have the gloss box like mine and those sold outside have the standard watch black box. But that might just be coincidence. The only thing holding the 40mm back from being a must have is the 5 stars on the dial. Also, any watch in the $1000 price point, with a leather strap should have a deployant clasp IMHO.

    Fun review I enjoy your enthusiasm. Apart from
    the mismatched date wheel colour a minor niggle is that the date window is misaligned slightly towards the centre as it should be in the arc of the hour markers. This would be corrected on a 36mm version. Why? Small movement in a large case. Yes, even at a ‘diminutive’ 40mm there is a movement spacer to match the case. If they fix the date wheel colour I could be in for the blue. Maybe it would look better on the brown strap. Yes, I’m thinking IWC MkXVIII which is twice the price. Lume is fun and this is a good bang for the buck execution. Fun everyday watch. Longines was my first nice watch when I was a kid so I have a nostalgic connection. I’m even warming to the 5 star general dial decoration. The sunray in blue is nice if the blue is a pretty hue as it gives so many colour variations depending on the ambient light. I’ve got a Tissot Gentleman with a similar vibe at a much lower cost. Funny how they use 21mm straps to maybe limit aftermarket options.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wrote that before... the date window position & size is ok with the 40 mm case, but not with the 42 mm case... The color of the date disk will be changed, I got constructive feedback from Longines already... Tastes are different, but what one can not discuss and what makes this "Spirit" so unique is the price-quality-ratio...

      WatchAdvisor yeah it’s a cool watch and all views are subjective. I’ll stick with my Tissot Gentleman with similar ETA movement and silicon balance spring. 70+ PR and accurate within +/1s/day. The Longines is much better finished of course but the Tissot also gives a decent bang for the buck without going too deep for a daily beater style watch. That blue is cool though.

    Definitely not a perfect watch for me...
    1. For 40mm dial with a 50mm lug to lug is over done, this is the same problem with the Longines Legend Diver, super long lugs! It kills my interest the moment I tried it on my wrist. Like every one correctly said, 48mm is the max for 40mm dial, what’s the point of making a dial small but with a long lugs, it defeats the whole purpose.
    2. The 3 is missing and thrown the whole dial out of balance, pls make a no date version as you can see many appreciate a balanced dial.
    3. Understood the date window is a selling point and that’s why it is fitted, however, it’s not fitted aligning to the same circle of other hour marker, it is slightly off set to the left (to the centre of the circumference), and the window is a little under size. Also, if they could fit a “frame” on the window will make it look more luxury instead of just a plain hole.
    4. The back ground colour of blue and white dial is not matching properly as mentioned, this is the failure of attention to detail.
    5. The lug width of 21mm is definitely an odd size, I’m sorry to say...
    Big room for improvement, the watch is over rated in the review.

      greg medbourn have you looked at an Omega Hourvision date at 41mm. Great in house movement decent PR and stylish looks. Could be the Goldilocks size. Bit pricy but discounts available as it’s a mature design. Strap or bracelet combos. The blue dial looks stunning. Whatever you do go try them all on in person. One will just click it’s all subjective. Good luck!

    hi! enjoyed your video! did longines say when they will release those quick immediate changes? I am thinking of getting one before year end but am holding out for those changes that you have given feedback for. In addition, did they also say that they will be adding some kind of border around the date window or adding a non-numeric marker at the three o'clock? that will make it perfect! (pretty sure shifting the date window and shortening the lugs are not minor changes so I'm not expecting those)

    Hi Alexander, excellent presentation. I would like to ask you how would you compare Longines with Tudor?

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Longines versus Tudor will be the future match. Of course Longines today is much bigger and sells many more watches, but in the upper end of the collections the two brands will start to match each other from now on. The differences in between the watches are minimal and from both you get excellent value for the money and a top notch quality. Let your heart decide and choose the watch you simply like better. If I can get hands-on both watches it will be a pleasure for me to make a review...

Anyway I have already a Tudor GMT and I was thinking about the BB58 but once when I seen the spirit collection just already decided... For me that 40mm in blue will be an excellent choice. Just out of interest do Swatch have to make watches at each tier not as perfect as the tier above?
    I mean I'm no watch expert but if they made lugs shorter, strap 20mm, date moved to right and same colour as dial we would have a near perfect watch (for those who want a date). Why then do they not design it this way? Seems like basic common sense.
