  • Yesterday I built this Crust Bikes Malocchio road bike and took it on a ride in the Marin Headlands. I take a close look at the frame and fork, chronicle the build, and say thank you to the folks who helped me get it together.

    i realize that the rear wheel isn't fully seated in the rear dropout!! this has now been fixed.

    Great looking ride. You can probably rebraze that rear bridge if you care to have more clearance. But yeah, 35 GP5000 would be great, I like the idea of 38-42 Panaracer slicks but Conti GP is still better rolling. I wish they made them in 38c. Cheers! Happy riding!

      i have the gp5K's on my carbon spaceship bike i mentioned. they do roll really fast!! i talked to Erik Billings about fixing the rear bridge but after setting up the bike, it's not going to be an issue for me.

    i want one of these frames so bad, great build! ritchey saddles are great, underrated like many of their components.
    ps: i have an almost identical bag from farther bags, as well as see tons of swift catalysts daily, and they all just seem to tilt down like that. one of those headset spacer bag support jobs maybe the move on a rack unfriendly bike like this.

    • @callinginsickmagazine
      @callinginsickmagazine  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thank you! the comment about the bag wasn't a knock on it, just noting that it's close to the tire. shoulda phrased that a lil differently.

    Have eyed this frame as a replacement/compliment to my Waterford that only clears 25 mm tires. Love your build choices. Can you provide a measurement from centre of BB to top of saddle?

    have you thought about 36mm Challenge Strada Bianca tires?

    Malocchio Spirt murdered out in all black. Satan would be proud. I was interested in this frameset a while back, but decided on something else because in my size (53) the seat tube angle was too laid back for my setup and the threaded fork, although beautiful, is just one step retro that I can't see myself returning to.

    Super Sweet! How about a Bombora comparison? I love rim brakes:)

    • @callinginsickmagazine
      @callinginsickmagazine  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thanks!! that would be like a comparison between a subaru forester turbo and a 1980's ferrari. if you want a rim brake version of a Bombora I'd probably recommend something like a Black Mountain Cycles Monster Cross.

    How bad are the brakes? I got some long reach brakes with 28mm tires and i keeping bending the bolt of the front brake because the big tire push to much pressure to the brake, i guess that with 38 barely stops?

    Hi, what size frame and stem length, on this?

    • @callinginsickmagazine
      @callinginsickmagazine  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      57cm / under large (56.3cm top tube). stem length is 100mm. might be a bit long, might try a 90mm

  • @macarlino

    Very cool. Was the all black cassette purposefully used on this build or was it a stroke of luck it matches the rest of the theme? Gloss black bits also go hard. Stoked for you!

    I'm thinking about building a Malocchio, but worried about fitting 700 x 38c in the rear if I accidentally get the wrong wheel/tire/caliper combo. What is the model of these wheels, tires and brakes you have here? Any advice?

    • @callinginsickmagazine
      @callinginsickmagazine  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i wouldn't sweat it too much. these are hed ardennes wheels, tektro r539 brakes, and panaracer gravelking slick tires. IMO the brake is the biggest consideration for clearance with a 38. these tektro brakes are awesome and inexpensive.

      @callinginsickmagazine  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm 5'-9" with 75cm saddle height (center of bb spindle to top of saddle measured along the seat tube). my guess is the under large would be a good fit for you

    I think the rear brake bridge is an issue, but only because i would like to use fenders. The Maloch is a damn near perfect allroad bike in vintage clothes otherwise. What the All City Mr Pink wishes it was.
    Also, the roadie dunking...and then saying you'd keep up with a 40x11 top end ratio? Cmonnnnnnn
    Very nice bike and lots of sensible choices.
