I opened for an 80's hair band recently, and was asked if they could use my amp. I said they could but probably wouldn't want to use my Katana 100W MKII because those guys like to stand in front of a big amp. Two Marshall stacks were brought in for them, but the singer/guitarist ended up using my Katana instead! I watched in disbelief as that little Boss amp totally held its own against a Marshall ALL THE WAY UP. I have four Katana amps. Love them
I actually bought Thomann´s last Boss Katana MKII 50 watt version in stock and I am very happy how it works. It is extremely loud with a very clean high treble and good deep low bass. Perfect sounding amp even placed at 30 meters distance from me and its volume set at around 70% (2 o´clock on your dial). These are LOUD amps! I might buy the Gen-3 later.
I’m running a pair of katana 112 100’s a gen 3 as main and the Mk2 as its stereo partner. With a gafc and gafcex for total control! Such versatile powerhouses! ( as always I’m also using a 412 cab with a 50watt amp as center dry). I gotta have my efx loop(s) the Bluetooth option is soo worth the extra gold.
Had many amps. One of my two current amps is the Katana 100 Gen3. Very pleased. Particular highlights are the high gain sounds and the Pushed amp model. I had to tweak the EQ options to tame the top end slightly to taste, then the line out sounded fab through the PA (better than the amp itself IMO). I can hear how the mid opens up in the band mix when going from the 50EX to the 100. A touch less 'barky'. I use mine with an ESP Horizon 3, and a Fender Strat. It does take time and patience to tweak to a specific taste, and time playing with it to work out how to tune you and the amp together. Worth the effort though. My other amp setup is a small modded valve amp and pedals, costing multiple times what the 100 Gen 3 cost in total. I use that for a country and rock & roll band with a Nashville B-Bender Tele. Horses for courses.
Ok so I won't argue if it's better no, but once you run a good gate and drive pedal into these....it's hard to tell the difference.....the only amp id consider above these is a mt15, but it has no effects....how much for a cab, and effects to equal what's in a katana??? Probably about $3000 in gear 💯🤷🏻@@defur45
I had an EVH 5150 iconic head with the 6L6 tubes. Spent $1000 on the head and another $600 on a used Marshall cab. But I still needed effects to run through it. I played a Katana Gen 3 head at Guitar Center and ended up returning the 5150 and got the Katana for $320. I'm actually way happier with the Katana and I have endless effects on this Amp. Plus I ended up saving $700 returning the 5150.
Katana artist MK 1 owner here i’ve had it for three years, I just love it number one, It sounds great. Anyone can find their sound on one of these. The connectivity is great. I’ve hooked this amp up many different ways. With all the onboard effects, does anybody need to buy any pedals. My amp is truly a Swiss Army knife of amplifiers and way more versatile than any of my other amps and it sounds and plays and inspires me every bit as good as all my other amps I need to sell them also. While it is tempting to get one of these newer generation amps I am getting off the gas train here sonically I don’t think the newer ones could sound much better than my artist MK 1 to my ear at least PS my favorite way to use mine is 4 cable method with UA amp pedals
The Band Mix demo was great, and really did show some differences between some of the models. I thought the two 100W combos definitely sounded a bit ‘bigger’ than the 50s, but also very similar to each other, so not sure if the sound alone would justify the Artist. I’d have to look more closely at the other features. The one that did stand out for me was the 100W head. Obviously the different speakers (and the fact that there were two of them rather than one) would be a big factor there, but I definitely preferred it in this context. How those speakers would go in the amp’s clean or acoustic modes is another question though, and maybe that’s where the combos may pull back some ground. Thanks for a very interesting demo!
Still thinking about getting one of these Katanas. The relation of price and quality seems to be too good. Especialls if you want to have the option of including a cab someday. Thanks for the shootin'!
Nice video, thank you! I have the Artist Gen 3 & the Artist MK 2 - pure beauties:) You can coulpe them up in "Stereo Expand Mode" (for Stereo Delay, Reverb, etc...) BUTTTTTT, the GEN 3 doesn't have "Dual Link" anymore, so you cannot connect them "Dry-Wet" - NOOOOOOO, so sad about that! I also contacted BOSS, but it seems to only be possible with a classic extra AB-Splitter. Anyways super nice Amps in my opinion!
I'm just not sure if the artist is truly worth it? I'm willing to spend the money if it is. But I do like that the base 100w model is easier to carry around
At first I thought the 50 could keep up with the other instruments. But then realised with the other models that you had kept them all pretty low in the mix. It would be interesting to know what volume the 50 was set at. It would give a better idea of which model is needed for the job.
I’ve done dozens of gigs with my Roland Blues Cube Hot it’s 30 watts and is plenty loud enough to keep up with a full band including drums, second guitar and keys and bass. Some gigs the amp is mic’d mostly it isn’t. I’m not sure if The Tube Logic technology is equivalent to real valve power but set at 0.5 watts it can very quickly be way to loud for bedroom practice
@ yeah, my first amp was a Peavey Bandit (1982) with more than enough power. However, I have found that not all amps are created equal when it comes to wattage. The class “D” amps are another thing.
I have just brought the artist and again just sold all my other amps and my fractal fm3 will be next, great video lads, I have liked and subscribed, what's the settings on the intro amp, cheers.
Thanks! G used the 50 for the intro, pushed setting, some drive, some mild fxs. That's it. Very similar to his settings later on in the video. Cheers //Kris
Guillaume, please write the tabs or chords of what you played at the beginning of the video from 00:16 to 00:50. I really liked this part, it sounds just incredible, I would really like to repeat it. thank you very much
I liked the in-ear experience of the 100 the best, but I’d be curious to hear an Artist 100 vs a base 100. The Artist combo in this sounded very small in the mix.
Great video, but it still is difficult to choose between the Katana 100 or the artist. I know the artist has a wazaa speaker but I can't hear a difference in the video. Is there any difference in sound ?
I didn't hear much of a difference between them when you introduced the drums and bass. On their own I can totally hear the difference, but not in the mix. Maybe it is just my ears.
Je me demande si serait pas mieux d'avoir un ampli à lampe avec un bon multi effet? Sinon le katana artist est il mieux ampli que le spark 2 au niveau son? J'hésite entre les deux. Merci
I don't have a Gen 3 but a Mk2. With the GA-FC if you long press the button for the channel that you are using it will turn on a boost for soloing. You can preset the amount of boost using the Boss app.
You cannot gig the Katana, have tried a v1 Artist and a v2 2x12 and both were not loud enough to keep up with a band, went back to my Marshall DSL40CR and Fender Twin for gigging. Dissapointing Boss got so close, but just not enough power, real shame..
Which Katana mk iii is for me? None. Sit'n on two mk ii 212's. I've always thought they sound the best of the bunch. Why no mk iii 212 here today? I'm not understanding the addition of more analog switching on the panels? Other than just giving you more predetermined settings. What is the advantage? It's like they're going backwards with the tech. Why bother with Tone Studio. If they're just gonna try'n charge more to put select features back on the analog panel? Any connectivity is obviously welcomed. But the rest is completely pointless. Gimmicks.
While these sound pretty impressive for solid state amps, I still won't be trading my tube amps for one. There is just an unpleasant dryness to the upper register that doesn't suit my taste. Oddly enough, they can also sound both harsh and muddy at the same time, almost like they're missing the harmonic information necessary for more detailed tones. Solid state has seen great strides in the last decade or so, but it still won't replace tube amps for pure tone or power. To each their own though... I'm glad people have more options available to them.
None. I prefere it oldschool. Plug and play. No chichi no blingbling. But thats all to personal prefrences. I am shure those amps are great for people who like all in one solutions ore like to play around with apps and softwear instead of their instrument. But its not for me and be shure that i have tried. 🤷🏻♂️

You really think it is better than the tube amps you own?
@@defur45 Owned. Comparable at least, not necessarily better and a lot more flexible.

Best thomann video ever. IMO see the set up can be interesting (for the future) Thanks G, Kris and ¿Giacomo? 🎉🎉🎉 Thanks Thomann!

I love the Artist! It is an amazing amp. Blues On....👣
If only the 50 EX had an effects loop, as it would be my choice for home use. Pure commercial decision I guess, to persuade you to buy the 100.

I liked the head room of Artist and had more appealing mids to me.

I’m genuinely surprised they didn’t comment on this. Probably because the answer is no…
@@primaljackal Good that you replied, I already forgot this post and got the answer somewhere else. The artist speaker gives a deeper and warmer tone.
