It's also a great way to learn how to cook - see what they did, try to replicate, and if you pay attention you'll over time begin to learn the 'why' of it working, alongside the 'how' of it working
I want to like this stuff…. but I’ve never had personal success with it (I did a brisket with my dad and he trimmed the fat off before I got there 😢, he also wanted me to stop cooking it at medium rare so it was tough and chewy). Smoked meat in general though, I just don’t love the flavour. I love a campfire 🔥. I love smelling like smoke the rest of the night. I just don’t want to taste it.
Overall it’s a phenomenal experience. It’s thousands of dollars of free education, at my center and trade I believe it’s about $80k of education for free. You get free housing, food, amenities like a gym and recreation building. So it all sounds super awesome right? But then you have to look at the negatives. You’re forced to live in a group dorm very close to one another (at least at my center). Everyone has conflicting personalities so there’s always drama (which I hate). Depending on the location and rating of your center, the staff and student body can be a bit more… hostile (I was lucky). And you can’t really go home until you graduate, unless your local then you can go on weekend pass, but depending on your color card you can only go at least once a month. So far I’ve been here almost 6 months and my experience varies. Some days I’m on the friggin moon, I’m excelling in trade, learning new skills like HAM radio, people are being decent and there’s no drama, and the cafeteria food is sublime. And other days, people are arguing all day in trade, I am not as productive, people are bitching, the cafeteria food sucks, and my roommate DOESN’T WANT TO SHOWER. I really think you ought to look at the list of the top centers that have the trade you’re interested in because if you can find a highly rated center, I’d go for it. I think the one I’m at is rated 5th overall so it’s a good center, but not without its negatives. Hope that helped! Any other questions I’m happy to answer!
