  • A video to support the novel, Hill 112. Part of the idea behind the story was to give a sense of what it was like for Allied soldiers in Normandy in the summer of 1944. This time we look at a junior officer in an armoured regiment. James Taylor commands 3 Troop in B Squadron of the (fictional) 165th RAC - although the actions are based closely on the operations of the actual 24th Lancers, and also the 23rd Hussars for Operation Epsom. The talk looks at the Sherman tank, and the modified Sherman Firefly, at the role and tactics whether in infantry support and against enemy armour. It considers the strengths and weaknesses of the Sherman compared to German armour and AT guns and tries to set these within the peculiar conditions of The British and Canadian sector of the front on Normandy.
