In the context of electronic circuits, particularly for transistors, a "Common Base" configuration is one of the three basic single-stage transistor amplifier configurations. The other two are "Common Emitter" and "Common Collector" configurations.
Common Base Configuration
In a common base (CB) configuration, the base terminal of the transistor is common to both the input and output circuits. It is typically used for high-frequency applications because it offers low input impedance and high output impedance.
Input Characteristics:
Input Impedance (Zin): Low (typically a few ohms)
Input Current (Ii): Flows into the emitter
Input Voltage (Vi): Voltage across the emitter-base junction
Output Characteristics:
Output Impedance (Zout): High (typically several kilo-ohms)
Output Current (Io): Flows out of the collector
Output Voltage (Vo): Voltage across the collector-base junction
Voltage Gain:
The voltage gain in a common base configuration is typically high.
Voltage Gain (Av) = Vo / Vi
Current Gain:
The current gain in a common base configuration is less than 1.
Current Gain (Ai) = Io / Ii
