You nailed. I know so many golfers who if they played like him would break 90 a lot, especially if they are playing easy courses like this one. But they don't. They hit ridiculous recovery attempts. Instead of bumping chips and making sure they get the ball on the green. They aim for flags instead of the fat of the green. What people don't understand is that even really good players play far more conservatively than one would think. You go low buy hitting more pars and less doubles, not by chasing birdies. Birdies just come when they come. With all that said, I think everyone dreams of being really good and this gent has maxed out how good he can get without improving his swing. That's a long road. I don't care how smart you play, you aren't going to shoot in the mid-70s on a 6800-7200 yard course bunting the ball around. Based on 50+ of playing, with lots of single digit players, the main difference between my index 18 with a 5 index is, they rarely have a "trainwreck" hole, let alone 2-3 per round. An occasional double is about the worst score they tend to post. One of my regular playing partners is an 8, and he rarely misses a fairway...which pretty much eliminates big numbers.
I had thorough lessons for years on some academie. Getting my swing on video and try to get into the desired positions etc. Did not significantly improve. Coach left and I changed to the other coach who had seen me trying all those years. The only thing he said was; ok look at the ball, now bash the $*** out of it. Best lesson of my life. I lowered scores. More fun working with the swing you have even if it doesn't look like Tiger. This guy may look less than picture perfect on the take-away, but impact looks pretty good.
Great job. Your chipping saves you a lot of strokes. Proof that it really is all about consistency, and that it doesn't matter how it gets there ... I can drive about 300 yards when I hit it right, and my swing plane & mechanics are generally pretty sound ... yet I'm still incredibly inconsistent. I'm usually barely breaking 90. I have shot 80 once a few years ago. I'm still securely double-digit handicap. I hope to change that soon. Working hard on building my repeating swing.
The one thing I’m jealous about is your putting. How do you gauge your distance control for each putt and set up before each round? Is It just a feel thing for you or do you have a check point?
Another great video! I played 9 holes on Saturday and 18 today. I didn't play well (45 on a short par 31 with 2 mulligans (literally hit 2 sand wedge tee shots in a row that didn't leave the tee box. And then I shot a 108 (honest score). Kinda frustrating, but I have yet to break 100, so that's to be expected I guess. You can't have your best stuff on every day. I think I may need a lesson with driver/tee shots because that's where I loose the most strokes. If I can get off the tee safely, I can usually play bogey golf.
Indeed, I try to emphasize that getting the ball in play off the tee + being tidy inside 100 yards are the biggest keys to better golf. Seems like you've already got the prescription!
@NotAScratchGolfer yeah, I'm getting somewhat decent within 100 yards. My shot game is better than my long game, although putting can be a little hit and miss. First time watching and was hooked immediately. Well produced, articulate, and informative video. Planning on subscribing and viewing on a regular basis. Keep up the good work.
Yup 💯 spot on. I’m in the 5-8 handicap range depending on how much I play. Sometimes only a handful of times per season as my season in the upper NE of the country is about 5 months long. Eliminate the big numbers, lots of pars and bogeys the occasional birdie and double cancel each other out and I shoot around 80 the majority of the time. When I’m on and playing more often I’ll shoot 36 (usually only play 9) and on bad days I’ll shoot 43/44. Never more than that. All about course management and missing the big number.
Bang on assessment! It was hot today in Scottsdale (111°F) and the ball was flying a club further than normal, I scratched out a 76 at McDowell Mountain from 6215 yards (easy course & I’m 54 yrs old) with a double on 18. I also had probably three pars on par fours that were downright ugly, but the pencil doesn’t care how you got four either, just mark it down. 😂

My observation of Adam is that like any low handicapper, he doesn't give away strokes around the green. Virtually always safely on with chips, lag putts are always inside his automatic range (which seems to typically be 4-5 feet for him) and then he always drains those to lock in the bogey at worst. Like many here, I recently came across your channel, Adam, and definitely am hooked. Keep it up.

The videos are awesome and your manner in the videos is really lovey to watch. If your ever in Ireland drop me a note and I’d love to host you for a round of golf here! All the best, Peter
My handicap says I’m an 8 but the money game players only give me 2-3 shots. I played with a couple actual scratch golfers who gave me tip throughout the round and I shot -4 under. Playing with a good Caddie and I’m sitting pretty -6 under. I’ve startEd to realize I need more course management than anything else in my game.
It's not hard to do this when your short game is solid and your drive is playable. I think you up-play your "bad" shot and downplay your strength. As others have pointed out, your bad shots are practically all playable and won't get you in trouble. You could argue that is in the head and course planning. We also don't have people next to us to give us course knowledge most of the time either. When I have the precise information and location, I can shave 5 shots in the round and into the single digits as well (done it a few times when I had a caddie). I would love to pace my pitch , chips and putts, but on a lot of courses that is not an option. The bottom line is handicap doesn't really matter if external factors are not equal. It only matters when you are in a group with the same resources and time.
I mostly agree! My short game is definitely my strength and perversely my lack of distance often keeps me out of extreme trouble. With that said, I think it does hurt me that I'm constantly playing different (unfamiliar) courses and don't get the chance to adjust to familiar greens. It's nice to have course knowledge from my playing partners, but I can count on one hand how many times I've felt "oh, this hole is familiar, I just do X" in the last two or three golf seasons.
I’m pretty close to a single digit. But my rounds are going from 90+ to 75 some days. It’s super inconsistent. If my putter is on, I’ll have a decent round. But I’m also pretty bad at thinking strategically as I make my way through the course.
The best skill of a single digit handicap golfer is eliminating double & triple bogies. It’s not that we necessarily make more pars than a 15-handicap golfer, it’s that we do a good job of not letting one or two bad shots lead to a double or triple on the scorecard. I tell this to all my double digit handicap buddies.
Cool video! I'm a 7 and can shoot anywhere between level par and fifteen over! Usually comes down to how many greens I hit, up and downs made and amount of three putts.
I love your videos man. Like you, I’m not the longest off the tee but have a decent short game. Took your advice from other videos and moved up one tee box today and carded my first 79. Keep up the great videos.
Love your videos and your take on golf. Just by using some of the tips and playing smart I broke 90 last weekend and shot a personal best of 87 on a pretty hard course. Keep it up!
Cool thinking! I'd work on fixing your pivot move. I see a considerable reverse pivot in your swing as your spine angle falls towards the target in your backswing. Just my observation!
7,5 HCP here. We play a very similar way of Golf. :D Two things that stand out in my game are my miss hits being thin, low but somewhat long and most importantly very straight shots. I rarely slice, hook, push or pull my misses. So my ball striking isn't the best in the word. Secondly what I define to be the most important of all short play and putting. If I miss the green closely or get on it with a long way to go, I feel comfortable in my ability getting down in two. My friends describe my golf as incredibly boring. I don't get many Birdies but consistency helps me get my Pars and Bogeys and run away with them.
Know you mentioned a lot on how you don’t like to do swing advice, but just shorten that back swing 50% and ur solid dude. I’m going through the same problem over swinging as a low HC and it makes a huge difference
Im off 7hc, Couple of things I feel us single digit golfers have over the higher hc golfers, is knowing where your weakness is, knowing our club yardages alot more and a bit more consistency of strike aswell, Putting is the major flaw in my game, putter fitting soon for me to find out where I can improve on it. Then hopefully drop some more putts and drop the hc down another point or 2...
Rating of 125?! Damn must be a tough course! 😜 Love your content. Playing off a 17 now but your videos always remind me how simple/reachable improving can be.
Probably gonna try swing peaks tomorrow or Friday and see how it goes. I do wonder what the randoms you get paired with think of playing alongside a vlogger?
Hey, Adam! Just discovered this channel and I am enjoying it. Love the "play aggressively to conservative targets" approach. Your game and mine are very similar - right down to our distances, which are extremely close, from what I can tell here. Generally in play off the tee, approach play is solid, and I tend to miss in an area where it's an easier chip. I like the bump-and-run and I putt pretty well. One thing that helped me a ton in the past couple of years was getting a 7-wood for those 175-190 approaches on longer par 4s and off the tee on some par 3s. It's easy to hit, flies high, lands soft, and doesn't want to duck hook like hybrids often did for me. Just wondering if you'd ever experimented with a 7-wood and what your thoughts were. I'm a 4 at the moment and you're absolutely right - single-digit golf can be scrappy sometimes!
Single digit handicap is good golf. Sure, it’s not that good compared to pro golfers, but in the realm of amateur golf it’s very good. You have to do at least a few things very well to be a single digit handicapper or be pretty good at every aspect of the game. In your case, it doesn’t “look” very good, but still good golf.
First off awesome video very entertaining and encouraging! Loved it. Second how did you record this? It was great and the ball tracking. Is that a program? Very cool maybe some links to your gear and software would be amazing! I appreciate the video!
As a 2 handicap I can’t agree more. I have a very interesting swing but it works and If it’s repeatable and consistent then it’s great. Sometimes I do have blow up rounds and they happen to everyone but I know for a fact that consistency is key and knowing when to go for it, or taking your medicine is crucial in damage prevention.
Practice often, play often, play the forward tee's, and relax. You'll be a single digit handicap before you know it. A predictable short game is the most important aspect of golf. Oh, and when playing championship courses, be ready for some humility, especially if it's a Pete Dye designed course!
My dad who's been a consistent 3-5 hi for 20+ years now used to preach to me, "there's a wall at 10" (meaning handicap). He would say something along the lines of, you can get to 10 by playing a lot and practicing here and there, but getting under 10 and staying there is whats hard. He'd explain the mindset of making as many pars as possible with a handful of bogies/doubles thrown in there. Then, any birdies you make are bonus on top of that. Mindset is everything with this game. Unless you're out practicing/playing often, its hard to get the game really dialed in so you should limit your expectations. Grind away and appreciate the game.
As someone who plays McCleery a lot and always looks over at Marine Drive and wonders what it would be like to play there this was a great video to see. Honestly a lot of the holes look almost the exact same. I imagine it is probably a little better maintained etc. Thanks for giving us a look at how the other half lives.
I’m a 5 and a lot of my buddies are between scratch and 7. The best players among us all have one thing in common, they are pretty dialed from 100 yards and in. Rarely do they miss a green from that distance and they average probably 20-25ft to the pin.
Great video. I just don't hit the ball straight like you do. I hit it harder and further, but looking at that course, I'd be in the trees a ton. I'd easily shoot 100 there, but I'd outdrive you on every hole. Just goes to show how much staying in the fairway is important. You keep it in the fairway. I'm constantly left or right. And when I go left or right, I go WAY left or right. Lots of drives way out of bounds or in other fairways.
Nice scoring Adam, despite the cold putter. If we're getting content from last summer does that mean there's a chance of a Bandon video appearing soon? 🙂
I'm currently 13 HC and I play alot with single handicap and + golfers and if I'm honest golf doesn't sound as fun. They're always so upset with a bogey and if they hit a few bad shots early they feel they have lost the round. I think I can get under 10 this year I just need to stop being greedy on good rounds. I had two holes play the other week. Currently looking at a sub 80 gross round and I had a nice par 5 and easy short par 4 left. After a great drive leaving me 260 down hill on par 5 I hooked 2 balls OB ended with a 9. Then final hole 7 off the tee 😢 tried smash one. I know a wedge and wedge gives me a nice 2 putt and a easy par on 17. Then I would feel easier on final tee box maybe play an iron.
I’m at the point now where if I don’t hit any double bogey’s (or worse) i’m a 5-7 handicap, but that isn’t the reality. 2-3 bad holes a round keeps me at a 10-11 and I can’t wait to make the push forward.
Difference between Mid-Handicap and Single digit golf is short game. Single digit golfers get up and down at a better rate, putt better, and in general keep big numbers off the card. A bad round for a single digit is more than double bogey+ and more often than not have rounds with no double+ scores. They aren’t making a ton of birdies, more than 2-3 birdies is probably a career round for single figures golf. Typical round is a lot of pars (9-10) pars, a handful of bogey+ and a birdie or two.
@@NotAScratchGolfer essentially keep 6s off the card, par 5s should be par or better. After that, on a traditional par 72 you can bogey half the par 4s and 3s and still break 80.
Yes! An example would be a shot with the pin located 100 yards away on the front left corner of a green (while the middle of the green is 115 yards away). In this situation, I would try to take my most confident, care-free swing precisely at the middle of the green. If I miss short, long, left, or right, the ball should still find the green.
So to calculate how far you hit a certain drive do we just subtract it by the number of yards you have left to the flag or is there something else I’m missing? I’ve always wanted to know this!
On the course, you can use a golf ap like Golf Pad (freebie) on your phone. I pick the club while in the tee box, then when I get to the ball it tells me how far I've hit it; good for 'real world' golf when you don't have thousands to spend on a launch monitor. I've compared the Golf Pad vs a Gramin watch for distances, it's within 4yds every time; good enough for us hackers.

So, your game + better course management = low single digit? Do it!
@@NotAScratchGolfer yeah course management is a major one for me. Need to work on it and not make too many stupid decisions or take too much risk
Great attitude out there.
Love your videos and your take on golf. Just by using some of the tips and playing smart I broke 90 last weekend and shot a personal best of 87 on a pretty hard course. Keep it up!
My fave TH-camr!
I have that same Goodfellow Flamingo polo and EVERYONE asks me where I got it hahaha great shirt.
lol! This one is actually made by a Canadian company called Eagle Empire!
Cool thinking! I'd work on fixing your pivot move. I see a considerable reverse pivot in your swing as your spine angle falls towards the target in your backswing. Just my observation!
"That's a quack" is my favorite line from this video hahah
That sunset was beautiful holy geeze
Oddly enough, smoke in the air due to forest fires + a sunset made for great views!
That course looked super pure.
Hey bud! Yeah, it's the best private track in Vancouver, despite what some say...
Your score card looks just like mine lol. You’re exactly right in talking about just simply “thinking about you shot” makes a huge difference.
Brilliant!
Know you mentioned a lot on how you don’t like to do swing advice, but just shorten that back swing 50% and ur solid dude. I’m going through the same problem over swinging as a low HC and it makes a huge difference
Im off 7hc,
Couple of things I feel us single digit golfers have over the higher hc golfers, is knowing where your weakness is, knowing our club yardages alot more and a bit more consistency of strike aswell,
Putting is the major flaw in my game, putter fitting soon for me to find out where I can improve on it. Then hopefully drop some more putts and drop the hc down another point or 2...
Rating of 125?! Damn must be a tough course! 😜
Love your content. Playing off a 17 now but your videos always remind me how simple/reachable improving can be.
Probably gonna try swing peaks tomorrow or Friday and see how it goes.
I do wonder what the randoms you get paired with think of playing alongside a vlogger?
8:45 "FORE!"
You make the game look so easy haha
Single digit handicap is good golf. Sure, it’s not that good compared to pro golfers, but in the realm of amateur golf it’s very good. You have to do at least a few things very well to be a single digit handicapper or be pretty good at every aspect of the game. In your case, it doesn’t “look” very good, but still good golf.
Bingo! My channel thesis in a nutshell!
Love every video!
Thank you!
Practice often, play often, play the forward tee's, and relax. You'll be a single digit handicap before you know it. A predictable short game is the most important aspect of golf. Oh, and when playing championship courses, be ready for some humility, especially if it's a Pete Dye designed course!
Some days putting feels like the hole is smaller than the ball, other days feels like you are two putting from anywhere 😅
I'm a member at marine , when did you come here?? I wish I could've seen you around
I'm impressed by that long backswing, especially evident with your driver.
It’s consistency keeping me back. I’ll hit a 105 followed by an 81 the next day. Hell, 2 days ago, I posted a 56 on the front and a 38 on the back.
Homie is playing golf id love to play. I live in florida and I just went a shot a +17 in the rain 😂
I’m love in Venice Florida and I’m on the road to break 80
I’m originally from Missouri so I’m getting used to Bermuda
That 12 month golf season, tho....
what a golf course!
"Average, I guess." - some guy you know ;)
I’m a 5 and a lot of my buddies are between scratch and 7.
Thanks, Lindsay! How's all with you? Today's video was *almost* Bandon video #1. Expect them very, very, very soon ;)
@@NotAScratchGolfer great, been waiting on that one since the tease
great video!
Thank you!
Cool video. One tip. You over rotate in your backswing. You would gain a couple strokes if you could stop that a little bit.
At this moment in time I'd take your "not that good" golf. Great video as always
Thank you!
If you want to teach me some course management, we can go play Point Grey 😅
Love the videos. Your speech pattern sounds like Columbus, from the movie Zombieland.
Wait, Marine Drive like, Vancouver Marine Drive? New favourite Vancouver youtuber!
I think the clear difference between you and most players is you are lethal within 6 feet. Short putts are my biggest weakness
“Tweakers” LOL!
Lol, glad somebody appreciated that!
I’m at the point now where if I don’t hit any double bogey’s (or worse) i’m a 5-7 handicap, but that isn’t the reality. 2-3 bad holes a round keeps me at a 10-11 and I can’t wait to make the push forward.
Good stuff!
Bingo
@@NotAScratchGolfer essentially keep 6s off the card, par 5s should be par or better. After that, on a traditional par 72 you can bogey half the par 4s and 3s and still break 80.
Discount code oh Adam made me LOL
such a good channel;
Can you explain what you mean by aggressively shooting at conservative targets?
Yes! An example would be a shot with the pin located 100 yards away on the front left corner of a green (while the middle of the green is 115 yards away). In this situation, I would try to take my most confident, care-free swing precisely at the middle of the green. If I miss short, long, left, or right, the ball should still find the green.
@@NotAScratchGolfer awesome, thank you sir
I watched this video right before a round and shot my lowest score to date of 77. Thanks Adam!
This looks remarkably like my game. I'm a 6.4 index and feel like people think I should always break 80. Reality is much different.
7.2 for me & couldn't agree more. People don't understand handicaps.
This is like my twin. I have every single club that he’s playing in my bag, we have near identical handicaps and my names Adam to boot lol
Awesome as usual 🔥
I’m still struggling to get my handicap below 45. 😂😂
So to calculate how far you hit a certain drive do we just subtract it by the number of yards you have left to the flag or is there something else I’m missing? I’ve always wanted to know this!
I try to use a launch monitor when possible to obtain these numbers.
Have you always had a flat swing or something you went to?
