The sound of solvent flowing is relaxing.

Great video! Shopping for a hone setup(vinona ps370) and one thing i dont undersand is how you can tell how much material is being taken off and how to keep from taking off too much(until you get a feel for it with exp). Some machines have amp meters but how does that translate to size i dont qute get

11.28.15. @ 3:40 mark,........."use a razor blade & then use brake kleen to clean"........truer words never spoken, In respect to the blocks deck surface! ✌🏽️

I have a question. If the cylinder block had been machined flat and in this case It most likely wasn't would you still need the top unit to simulate a working/restrained condition? Great video and cheers from Canada.

Yes. The top unit (a torque plate) is used to simulate the cylinder head being attached. Blocks (cylinders) will distort when that much clamping force is applied. Some blocks distort alot, some hardly distort. General practice is to use a torque plate. If you hone it to the perfect size without a torque plate...when the cylinder head is attached, it could be a off measurement.

talking about using scotch brite being bad on the head mating surface then using sand paper? hmmm

wet dry paper he is using a hard block to back the paper. I think he is saying if you use a scotch bright pad by hand its to soft by design (woven thick pad) so if you run this by hand as most would, you are not controlling the cutting force applied to the deck. another alternative would be a very fine bench stone, similar to what you use to sharpen / hone a knife.

I think he is meaning those soft sponge scotch brite stuff....which would be uneven surface

Sandpaper on a flat block is not gonna distort the surface, so long as it's done with the right method.

the engine coarse i took years ago from GM , never use air driven round roloc pads. the gasket leaves a stain in the casting , that is ok not h=needed to sand away. If gasket is backed on i try and cut it of with razor blade and soak it with gasket remover. the razor blade you hold it almost 90 degre to surface and go back nd forth untill smoooth.
      thats all

How much do they charge for a bore and hone on a V8?

Good teacher I am from vzla I have a ford focus 2010 engine duratec 2.0 aluminum never rectifies and in the grinder they tell me that the cylinders of this engine are oval with that treatment of burnishing can be removed ovalization or you have to rectify and if in your If it rectifies and is 0.10 the cylinders would have to buy pistons to that measurements and rings or I would serve the standard strips and rings that I can help me

You would need a vehicle service manual and precision measuring tools for the cylinder bore. You have to measure how far out of round the cylinder is, then see if that number is within specification according to the service manual. You will also need to measure total bore diameter and bore taper and see if those are in specification. Finally, you must measure the pistons and see of they are within specification.
If all items are within specification, you can re-hone the block with a flex hone and install replacement piston rings on your old pistons. If any measurement is out of specification, you will need a machinist to oversize the bores, then buy oversize pistons and rings to match the bores. I suspect this is the situation you are in. Modern engines are usually metric, and oversize pistons and rings are generally sold as +0.5mm or +1.0mm so that is how far your engine might need to be bored and honed.

When you put the torque plate on why didn't you put on a gasket

It would be nice to distort a head with a scotch bright pad omg I wonder how long that take, I did it for 1 hour is that long enough

Boring a cylinder makes the walls parallel, honing like this is less accurate.

You can see in the video the bore bar never really cuts perfect. It was way larger in the bottom, which is what usually happens

No it isn't less accurate. This is rigid not spring honing.
