Extracting metals from their oxides by carbon reduction

Try to use a magnet to test the reaction mixture (2:15) (Place the magnet under the aluminium foil).
Some solid can be attracted. (This shows iron is actually produced. Just they are not having a silvery grey appearance.)
You may use an evaporating dish to hold the solid sample. Place the magnet under the evaporating dish for the testing.
(Caution: the reaction mixture is very hot. Place the magnet UNDER the evaporating dish. Really)
